Description

25mm-sheet 1. E. DEETZ.y PonTABLE CHAMBER.,
Patent-ea Feb'. 1-, 187e.
N. PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D. C. v
UNITED STATES Pararrrv y EDWARD DEETZ, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT |`N PORTABLE CHAMBERS.
specification forming pm of Letters Patent No. 172.980 dated February 1 i876; application med October 8, 1875.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD DEE'rZ, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Adjustable Sleeping- Chamber, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to construct for dwelling, hotels, Ste., an apartment which may be either expanded, so as to form a sleeping-chamber during the night, or contracted, so as to occupy but little space in la room whiclf'is required forother than sleeping purposes during the day. This object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed-to describe, referencebeing had tothe accompanying drawing, in which- Figures l and 2, Sheet 1, are perspective views, illustrating my improved extension apartment in a closed and in an extended condition, and Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, views illustra-tin g detailed features of my invention.
The compartment consists ot' the back A, front B, and opposite sides D and D', the back A being firmly secured to the wall ofthe room in which the compartment is situated, and the sides 1) D bein-g made, preferably, in sections e, 0.1,@2, a3, and e4, hinged together, so that when the front B is drawn out they will assume the position shown in Fig. 2; but when it is pushed inward will turn on their hinges and be folded together. I prefer to attachthe first section a of each side rigidly to the back A, andI also attach to the back, midway, or thereabout, between the opposite sides, a partition, E, of va depth corresponding with the depth of the sections ct. To this partition E is attached one end of a strip, F, and to the section c of one side, D, of the room, one 'end of an opposite strip, F', both strips F and F being. made iu sections, hinged together in the middle, as shown, and also hinged at their opposite ends to the front B ofthe apartment. These strips form thesides ofa bed-frame, and carry slats b for the rece-ption of a lmattress and bed-clothing. Between the partition E and the section a of the side A ofthe rooin is a space for a wash-stand, the front edge of which is iiush with, or slightly within, the front edges of the section a. and strip E. The front B has a door,G, and is provided with a suitable handle by which the said front may.
be drawn ont, casters being by preference attached to its lower edge vto. facilitate its movement.
When the apartment is expandedthe'side v -strips F F of the bed-frame are straightened,-
asl shown in Fig. 3, and serve tobrace the front and prevent it from being accidentally pushed inward; but when it is desired to contract the apartment the bed-clothes are-firstproperly laid, andthe frame is then slightly elevated ,in the center, when the front may be "pushed inward, the bed-frame folding on its central hinge and turning onthe end hinges until it is in the positionshown in Fig. 4.
It should be understood that the bed-clothes are also folded with the frame, so that when the room is again extended the bedhwill be in a proper condition for use.
l The end section c4 of cach of the sides DA turned around against the outside of the stal tionary section a in order to impart amore ornamental appearance to the side ofthe closed structure, and to allow` th'efront A to approach the bach more closely than if the sec-v tions a4 were hinged directly to the said front.
The sides-D and D may be composed either wholly of solid sections or wholly of slatted sections, or they may be partly solid and partly slatted, as shown, or a jointed frame of iron, covered with any suitable fabric, may, if desired, be employed in place ofthe hinged sections. There is, bypreference, a slight' space between the lower edge of each side and the door, partly for Ventilating purposes and partly to ease the movement of the sections.
The top of the apartment may either be left open, as shown, or maybe covered by a sheet of canvas or other suitable fabric, connected at its front end tothe front B, and wound at the rear upon a roller actuated by a spring orweight, so that when the front is drawn out the cover will be extended, and when the front is pushed in will be automatically taken up by the roller.
The back A may have formed in it an opening, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, to coincide with any Window in the Wall of the building', or the back may be entirely dispensed with and the sections c of the sides and the partition E connected directly to the Wall.
[n some cases telescopic sides, composed of sections arranged to slide one upon the other, may be employed in place of the hinged sections shown, but l prefer the latter as being simple and economical. I prefer, also, to construct the front and back in sections,'se cured together by suitable braces, in order that the entire structure may be taken apart and packed in a small compass for transportation.
I claim as my invention- 1. The within-described compartment, consisting of a' front, B, and folding or sliding sides D and D', connected tothe front and to a back, A, or to the Wall of' the building, all substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination ot' the side strips F F made in `sections hinged together, with the front B, the section a of one side, and the partition E, to which they are also hinged, all as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The strip d, hinged to the front B, and connected to the sections 1.4 of the sides, and serving to connect the front and sides together, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof l have Vsigned my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
-EDWARD DEETZ.
