Description

Sept. 24, 1929. G. GROEN 1,729,105
CHURN Filed Sept. 27, 1927 UNITE@ STATES GEORGE GROEN, OF VERLY, IOWA.
CHURN Application filed September 27, 1927. Serial No. 222,317.
The object ot niy invention is to provide a very sinnriile and inexpensive churn comprising); e. container havingY parts so constructed and arranged as to be daptc'd to be mounted 5 on an agitator shaft or' certain type of wz shing` machines.I so tl at the washing machine pi'iwcr plant may be used ifor running the churn.
Although the invention is susceptible of a l variety ot embodiments7 it .is unnecessary to tuuy describe and illustrate more than one in order to give a full understandiirgF of the invention. both from its structural and functional standpoints.
l *With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction7 arrangement and combination of the various parts oi? my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinaiter more 2o fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated :in the accompanying drawings, in which:
liiggure 1 shows a vertical, sectional View through a portion o'if a washingl machine tub, Z5 having; installed therein a churn embodying my invention.
Figure a detail, sectional View 'taken on the line 2 2 oi Figure l; and
:au 'e 3 an inverted7 perspective view metal cap :it the top ot the tub prot Y upwardiy into the churn. in the drawings, have shown portions oit a tub ot a washing` machine oi' the kind with which i: churn :is adapted to be used.
ifhe tub is indicated lfgoneraliy by the reioiIn once chin-actor 10. lt has the supporting; legs 12 und the hinged cover 141i.
Projecting upwardly ironi the bottom o the tub at thY center thereof is the agitator 1ro shaft 1G, having the squared ripper end 16,
Mv improved churn consists of a container' d at 18, which has generally the form A with the bottom 20. At its -f3oni has an opeiine as indiaround the opening Q2 upwardly a substanl tial distan ce into the churn.
rihe shaft 16 is received in a sleeve 26 forming a part oit the washing' machine. The squared end 16a of the shaft projects above 50 the sleeve 2G.
I provide at the top ot the tube 24 a cap 2S which slips over the top of the tube 24 and is wel ded or otherwise tightly secured thereto.
ln the cap 28 is a horizontal partition 30, 55 in which is a square hole 32 adapted to lit over the squared end 162L of the shaft l5,
in some cashingI machines, there projects upwardly from the bottom a sleeve 34 with a reduced upper extension 34, The' tube 60 24%. is of such size as to fit over the reduced eX- tension 34". The tube .24 and caprQS are strong' enough to support the churn body 18 just above the bottom of the tub of the washing; machine.
The churn projects upwardly above the washing` machine in the sizes most commonly used.
A hollow cone 8G surrounds the tube 24 at the lower part of the cone and is securely fastened thereto as by welding', and rests upon and is fastened to the bottom 20 of the churn.
The cone 36 serves to brace and strengthen the tube 24 and also serves a .function in contrilniting` to the proper agitation of the cream 3S in the churn.
The churn is provided with one or more vanos or wings 10, which may be secured to o the interior of the side wall oi the churn and U projected inwardly, or might be secured to the tube 211:, as seems more desirable under the circumstances.
Near its upper end, the churn body 1S is 85 provided on opposite sides with suitable handles 49. he churn is provided with a coneshapcd top or cover fiel. having a downwardly l i annular flange 4C Iad i d to 3e upper end body 18. The cover has a suitable, eentrally arrangljed handle 18.
lin the upper end of the cover is a down- Wardly projecting` tube 50 serving' as an air vent.
In the actual use of my improved churn, it is of course employed with the nas-,hingl machine in the manner already described. The agitator removed lrom the washingr machine, leavingY the sleeve 2li and the shaft 1G projecting upwardly shown.
rlrhe churn is inserted from above into the tub l() with the tube 24 receivingv the sleeve 26 and the shaft 1G until the squared end lo of the shaft enters the square hole in the partition 8O oi" the cap 2S. This cap, of course, is 'fastened to the tube 2l by a liquid tight joint.
Vhen the Washing' machine motor or other power unit is set in motion, it will be reinembered. that the dolly shaft 16 has a reciprorating rotary movement on account ot the eennection of the squared end 1C#L ot the shaft with the cap 28.
This reciproeatory rotary movement is im* parted to the churn.
There is thus provided a churn, which can be used by those Who own the Washing' machines adapted for use with the churn.
For the purpose of observing the condition of the cream 38 in the churn 1S, l provide a glass 54tsuitably secured to the churn over an opening;l 5G in the side thereof. The condition of the cream 3S can thus be observed Without the necessity of removing the cover all oit the churn.
Such a churn can be built at a very modest expense, and can be operated `from a power plant already provided without any additional expense for equipment.
Such a churn is therefore very economical to build and it is econoniical to operate.
Another ad vantage of a churn ot' this 1ind arises from the iact that water 52 can be placed in the tuh l() and maintained at the proper temperature vfor securing the best results in churning,- butter.
Changes may be made in the detailsI of: the Construction and arrangement of the parts o'l my improved churn without departing from the real spirit and purliiose ot' my invention, and it is my .intention to cover by my claim any modified ,terms ol structure or use ot mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within the scope of such claim.
claim as my invention:
For use with a washing machine havinga tub and an oscillatably mounted shai't extending` upwardly from the betteln thereof through a stationary sleeve for normally supportinga Washing` dolly, a churn et the character disclosed comprising a Cylindrical container provided. with a sleeve extending' up- `wardly trom and connected with lil1 fbo' li l) llt)
