Description

Aug. 27, 1929. NATHAN SKATE SCABBARD Filed Feb. 2, 1927 b. 4 a 1/41 /r/l/I r//////////// 0 0 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 27, 1.929.
UNiTED STATES PHYFENI OFFICE.
SKATE SCABBAIRD.
Application filed February 2, 1927. Serial No. 165,359.
This invention relates to improvements in scabbards for ice skates, and particularly to fastening devices for securing the same to a skate.
Among the objects of the invention is to generally improve the construction of scabbards of the character described so as to provide one which may be readily attached to various types of skates and yet comprise few and simple parts, which shall be comparatively cheap to manufacture, and practical and efficient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of the scabbard and fastening device embodying the invention mounted on a skate.
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the improved scabbard and fastening device.
Fig. 3 is a View in transverse section through the Scabbard, and showing the fastening device in elevation.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of a modified form of the invention.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, 1 show a scabbard made of leather or other suitable material, and constructed to embrace the blade of a skate.
The scabbard is formed of a pair of side strips 10 and 10, and a spacing member or base strip 11, the several parts being secured together by a row of stitches 12. The base strip 11 is preferably of tapered cross-section so as to cause the strip 10 and 10 of the scabbard to be inclined toward each other at their upper edge portions in order to neatly fit on the skate blade.
To secure against displacement of the scabbard from the blade, a pair of similar fastening devices is provided, each of which is of unitary construction, and has sliding cooperation with the scabbard.
Each fastening device includes an engagement member 13 formed of resilient material such as sheet metal, and a holding means such as straps 14. Preferably the straps are made of a flexible material and are movable to overlie the blade or runner to hold the scabbard in position.
Each member 13 may consist of a U-shaped strip bent to receive the Scabbard, the arms 13 and 13 of the U being disposed about the sides of the Scabbard. An arm 13 of the U is folded inward at 15 to provide a groove to slidably receive the free edge portion of the adjacent side 10 of the scabbard and to hold the engagement member 13 on the scabbard. The other arm 13 provides an anchorage for one end of the strap being fastened thereto by a rivet 16, and may be attached to permit a pivotal movement of the strap. The strap when folded over the blade of the skate has its free end detachably secured to an arm 13* by suitable means such as a snap fastener having head and socket portions 17 and 17 a respectively.
The scabbard may also be provided with a means at the rear end thereof in the form of a headed pin 18 secured to the side 10 of the Scabbard, to prevent the fastening devices from sliding off the Scabbard.
If desired the Scabbard may be formed of one-piece construction 100 as shown in Fig. 4, but the co-operation of the fastening device therewith is the same as described above for the three piece Scabbard. In every case, the sliding engagement of the fastening devices provides for maximum adj ustability to skates of different make.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent z- 1. A device of the character described comprising a scab'bard, and a fastening means to secure the same to the runner of a skate, the fastening means including a member of U- shape to embrace the Scabbard, one arm of the U being terminated by an inwardly bent hook-shaped end to engage the free edge portion of the adjacent side of the scabbard and to hold the member onthe Scabbard.
2. A device of the character described comprising a scabbard having sides and a bot tom, and fastening means to secure the scabbard to the runner of a skate, said fastening means including a member of U -fOIZIH positioned to slidably extend about the exterior of the sides and bottom of the scabbard, said member having an arm bent inyvard to form a groove for receiving thefree edge portion of an adjacent side of the Scabbard, a strap having one end securedtothe other arm of the U-member, detachable engagement means for releasably fastening the free'endof'the strap to the first mentioned arm, and stop means at the ends of the Scabbard to prevent the fastening means from sliding off the Scabbard.
3. A device of the character described comprising a scabbardof U-shaped cross-section and a fastening means to secure the same to the runner of a skate the fastening device including a portion having sliding and retaining hook-shaped end embracing a free edge portion of a side of the scabbard.
4:. A skate Scabbard construction comprising sides strips separated by a base strip, each of said side strips being secured along one edge portion to the base strip, said base strip being of tapered cross-section to incline the side strips toward each other at their other edge, portions, whereby a skate blade may be snugly embraced between said side strips.
In testimony whereof I afi ix my signature.
