UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAR-RY L. SWAN, OF MLBANK, SOUTH DAKOTA.
cre-finn'rrnivrairrne nnvrcn.
Substitute for application Serial No. 130,223 filed April 1, 1327. This application filed December 6, 1928. Serial No. 324,262.
This invention relates to cigarette torming devices and has special reference toa device of this character adapted or use in the home or office and providing means to form and maire cigarettes, either oval or round and oit any length up to i'our inches.
lihc present application is a substitute tor an. abandoned application Serial No. 180,229 iiled April l., 1927.
@ne object of the invention is to provide a simple and eiiicient device by means of which any person, without particular skill, can make a number ot cigarettes at a time, as tor instance suticient to till a cigarette ease or more.
A second object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which can be used for making either oval or round cigarettes, in accordance with the construction of the device, and of any desired length as for instance up to four inches long.
A third object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character by means or' which a cigarette may be formed w rich can be carried in a case and will not disrupt and spill the contents under ordinary circumstances, this being accomplished by provision of means whereby the end of the cigarette paper may be twisted during the formation.
A fourth object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character having a lilling tube and a plunger working therein which plunger isprovided intell` mediate its ends with a shoulder preventing the plungerl from being pushed too tar through the tube, this plunger forming a simple means to remove the tobacco from the forming tube when the latter is illed and push it into the cigarette paper which has been previously wrapped and cemented or glued to form around said forming tube.
A fifth object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character having a hopper or reservoir provided with an inverted truste-conical cover open at the middle so that the filling of the hopper may be greatly facilitated, the cover owing to its form preventing tobacco from spilling` when using or when the device is laid down in a horizontal position.
lilith the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general oi' certain novel details of construction and combinations oit parts .hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanyingl drawings and specifically claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure l is a vertical median section through the device with the cover raised.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the piston or plunger.
Figure 3 is a. plan view of the cover.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the assembled device with a cigarette paper wrapped thereon and ready to be cemented or glued.
ln the construction of the invention there is provided a cylindrical hopper or reservoir e having an inverted truste-conical bottom open at the center and from this bottom extends a 'forming tube g of circular crosssection but which may be of oval cross-section as shown at It. Movable in this hopper and tube is a plunger Z) having at its lower end a piston head f of circular form but which may be modilied for use with the oval tube 71, as shown at z'. At the top of the plunger rod b is provided a head w and intermediate the ends of said rod is a collar al which is of suficient size to engage the mouth opening at the upper end of the tube and thus limit the downward movement ot the plunger rod. On the hopper e is tightly fitted a closure c of inverted truste-conical torni and open at the middle so that tobacco may be readily poured into the hopper through this closure or cover, the form of the cover directing the tobacco downwardly into the hopper and preventing spilling ot the same. Furthermore, due to this form tendency of the tobacco to spill out of the hopper when the device is laid on its side is prevented.
In use the cover is placed on the hopper and the plunger inserted with the head 7 in the4 forming tube so that tobacco may be poured through the cover into the hopper and not escape through this tube. Then a cigarette paper 7c having a gummed edge is wrapped around the forming tube as shown in Figure 2 and the gummed edge moistened and stuclr down. The cigarette paper is then drawn ofi the end of the forming tube and twisted to cross the lower end of the cigarette tube. Next the plunger is raised to allow a charge of tobacco to pass into the tube, g and is then pushed down to compact this charge, the user holding his nger over the twisted end of the cigarette tube and pressing it against the forming tube during the compacting. rI`hen the user removes his finger and the plunger is pushed further down which forces the compacted charge out of the Jforming tube and at the same time strips the cigarette tube off of this forming tube. Finally, the upper open end of the cigarette may, if desired, be twisted although with the tobacco properly compacted this is not always necessary.
There has thus been provided a simple and elicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the orm and construct-ion or the invention without departing from the ma. terial spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
l. In a hand cigarette forming device, the
combination of a hopper having an inverted frustoconical bottoni open at the center and a forming tube extending downwardly therefrom, an inverted frusto-conical cover seated on the upper end ot said hopper and open at the center, and a plunger passing through said cover and having a lower end reciprocable in the tube and provided with a piston head.
2. In a hand cigarette forming device, the combination of a hopper having an inverted truste-conical bottom open at the center and a forming vtube extending downwardly therefrom, an inverted truste-conical cover seated on the upper end of said hopper and open at the center, a plunger passing through said cover and having a lower end and reciprocable in the tube and provided with a piston head, and a collar on said plunger of greater diameter than the opening in the tube and spaced above the piston head, said collar forming means to lim-it downward movement or the head in said tube and also forming a closure valve for the upper end of the tube.
In testimony whereof I amx my signature.
