The merits of my invention, together with a detailec. description of its construction and operation, are fully set forth in the following specification. The present specific embodiment of my invention is illustratedin the accompanying drawings to which reference is made in the specification.

Referring now to the drawings and first to Figure 1, the numeral 10 designates a typical door mounted by means offhi'nges 11 in its iframe. In this view the door frame members are concealed from view by the trim 12, which is common in building construction. The numeral 13 designates generally a typical mortise lock lsetinto the s `:inging edge 14, of the door 10; this lock having an inner knob 15 for withdrawing the main bolt 16; the knob 15 having a bearing in the cover plate 17 secured to the outer side rail ot' the door. formed upon the side plate 21. An exjpansile helical spring 31 surrounding the shank 27 and confined between the head 26 and spaced lugs 29, normally holds the bolt '11'6 in'itsfoutermost posit-ien with the major portion of the head 26 extending beyond the outer face of the plate 23. The bolt 16 is normally held against outward movement by means of` a cross bar 32 secured to its inner end abutting against spaced lugs 33 and 33iformed-upon an arm 34 oi' a lever plate 35. This movement ot' the plate 35 carries the bolt rearwardly, as above described.
When the shat't 43 and bell crank 41 are rotated to the lett, rotating the plate 35 upon its pivot through the medium ot the arm 38 and arm 47, the iull movement may be had and the bolt withdrawn its toll distance into the casing 20; but when the l ell c'ank is rotated to the rightthe arni engages lug` 49 which limits the rearward movement of the bolt 16 so that it is only withdrawn substantially hallc way into the casing 20. Thus rotation of the inner knob 15 to the right withdraws the bolt halt way While its rotation to the lett withdraws it to the full extent of its throw; that is, withdraws the head 26 entirely within its bearing 28 in the 'liront plate 23.
The bolt 16 may be withdrawn by the outer knob (not shown) which is rigidly mounted upon. a shaft 5l); the latter havingv a bearing in an outside cover plate, similar to the inner Cover plate 17 and also in an inner block (not shown) which is ittcd into a recess in the door. The shaft 50 carries a cam 51, which is normally in the position illustrated in` Fig. 2. The shaft 51, on which the outer knob is mounted, has no connection with the shatt 43 on which the inner knob is mounted, and rotates independently thereof. The periphery of the cam 51 normally engages the bottom fave 52 of a cam block 53; the latter being vertically, slidably mounted between walls 54 and 55 formed on the bottom portion oi the flange 24, which toi-m a guide-way. small extension 56, on this bottom portion of the flange 24, a lug extension 57 engaging the top edge ot wall 54 and a lug extension 58 enfbfaging` the top edge ot the wall all form stops to limit the downward move-- ment ot the cam block 53, as well as the engagement of its bottom 'tace 52 with the periphery ol' the cam 51. An arm extension 59 extending' upwardly between lugs 29 and 30 on the side plate 21, also serves to guide the cam block 53 and maintain it in ri id alinement when it has been moved upwsuf'lly by the cam 51, The cam block 53 is recessed, as at 60 to extend around the inib- 42 ot the bell crank 41 when it is moved. upwardly. Thus, rotation of the outer knob and shut-5 50, in either direction, causes cam 51 to 'aise the cam block 53, and withdrz'lw the bolt 16 through the medium ot lug` 57 engaging the bottom tace 61 ot arm 33, and the latter rotating plate 35 about its pivot, in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2. lilith the outer knob, the boltl 16 may be drawn either halt or .tull way bach', by rotating the knob in either direetii n., as there is no means in connection with this knob to limit its witl'idrawal, as in thease ot' the inner knob. However, this may be provided by formino a stop on the cam 51 which will limit its rotation in one direction.
The bolt 16 may also be withdrawn by means of a key, troni the outside, when the door is locked, as will be hereinafter eX- plained. The usual type of tumbler lock 62 is provided adjacent the top oi the casing 20, which is adapted to be actuated by a key from. the outside. This lock has an arm 63 which is adapted to be rotated by a key, in the direction indicated by the arrow (Fig. 2), when inserted troni the outside. Arm 63 is adapted to engage the dist-al end ot an arm 64 pivotally mounted upon a pin 65 carried by a secondary locking; bolt 66. As the bolt 66 and mechanism which. aotuates it has no connection whatsoever with my invention, I have not illustrated it in detail, but have only shown it in so far as in this type ot lock it provides a mounting means for the arms 64. This, of course, be varied and the arm 64 mounted directly upon the side plate 21. A lue` or projection 67, on the inner side of arm 64, is adapted to engage an arm 68 ot' a bell crank 69; the latter pivotally mounted upon the side plate 21 by means of a pivot pin 70. The other arm 71, ot the bell crank 69, is adapted to engage the arm 36 of plate 35; the engaging ends ot these arms beiner properly formed to effect a slidinar engagement.
By rotation of the arm 63 into engagement with the distal end of arm 64, the latter will be depressed or moved in the direction indicated by the arrow (Fig1 2), and this, through the medium of lug' 67 engaging arm 68, will move the arm 71 downwardly` in the direction indicated by the arrow, which will. also carry arm' 36 of plate 35 downwardly as indicated by the arrow. This effects a rotation ot the plate 35 which withdraws the bolt 16 within the front plate 23. By the use of the key actuating the lock 62, from the outside, the bolt 16 may be withdrawn either its full oran intermediate distance, as there is no stop means to limit this movement, as the arm 63 is adapted to be rotated only in one direction as shown, This withdrawal ot the bolt 16 by a key from the outside actuates themechanism to withdraw the bolt ini'lependently of the means actuated by either the inner or outer knobs. A lue' 72, formed on the inner face of the side plate 21, forms a stop against which the arm 71 abuts so that it will always be in en `sagement with the arm 36 ot plate 35. This, ot course, is when the plate 35 is in its normal position as illustrated in Fig. .2. The lug 67, on arm 64, willnormally rest upon the arm 68 so that its distal end will always e in position to be engaged by the lock arm 68, except when the bolt66 is extended to locking position. Tt may be here mentioned that the bolt 66 is designed to be thrown from the inside only by means ol a mechanism actuated by a small knob 7 8, shown in Fig. 1.
ln this type ot lock the bolt 16 may always be withdrawn by rotation ot the inner knob,.fwhile a means is provided tor throwing a latch to prevent its withdrawal by rotating Vthe outer knob. This is effected by a pair of push pins 74 and 75 operatively connected together by means of a rocker arm 76. Each of the pins 74 and 75 have reduced ends 77 mounted to slide in apertures 78 formed .inthe plate 28; these apertures being tapered larger towards theirl outer ends so the nger may be inserted to push the pins inwardly. The pins 74 and 75 are so mounted that when one is pressed inwardly its reduced end 77 will lie near the inner end of its aperture 78, while the opposite one will extend outwardly, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The rocker arm 76-i-s pivotally mounted at its center upon a pivot pin 79, carried by the side plate 21, and is pivotally connected at one end to the pin by means ot a pin 80 and at its opposite end to the pin 74, by means of' a pin 81 carried by the latter and extended into an elongated slot 82. The pin 74 has anextension 83 on its inner end which slides between lugs 84, to support it in alinement.; rand this end 83 is adapted to extend over the lug 58 upon cam block 58 when the vpin 74 is moved inwardly, as shown in Fig. This prevents the cam block 58 being raised by the cam 51 on shaft 50, which prevents the bolt 'from being withdrawn by rotation ot the outer knob. TWhen it is desired to lock the door so that the bolt cannot be withdrawn by rotation of the outer knob, the pins 74and 75 are moved from the position shownin Fig. 2Lto that shown in Fig. 8. 'An inverted V-shaped lug V85, formed on the bottom ot' pin 74, engages a leaf spring 86 to yieldingly hold the push pins in either of vtheir eXtreme positions.
A complementary locking plate 87 (see Fig.V 5) is ladapted to be mounted in a suitably ormedrecess in the side rail 19 adjacent the swinging edge 14 of the door 10. This may be secured in place by means of screws 88; and in order that it may not be removed whenthe door is aj ar, by removing the screws 88, l provide an additional security in the form of a pin 89 adapted to extend through bores in the side rail 19 and through an aperture 90 in the plate 87. The head or inner end 91 oit this pin, which is inserted from the inside, is covered by the trim 12 on its inner face, as shown in Fig. 6.
This plate has a complementary recess 92 into which the head 26 of bolt 16 is adapted 'to extend to lock the door; and a similar recess 98 into which the bolt 66 is adapted to be extended when in locked position.
The inner tace of plate 87 is recessed, as at 94, to receive the arm 18; this arm having a pivot stud 95, preferably formed integral adjacent its upper end which is adapted to extend through a bearing bore 96 in the plate 87. The rear face of the plate 87 is recessed or enlarged as at 97, surroundingthe bore 96, so the arm 18 may be securely held in place as by means oi a washer 98 and cotter hey 99. ly this means the arm 18 cannot be removed from the plate 87 when the door is opened. The arm 18 has a longitudinal slot 100 into which the head 26 of bolt 16 is adapted to extend, as hereinafter eX- plained. The recess 94 in the plate 87 forms a rear flange 101 against which one side of the arm 18 abuts when hanging in its normal vertical position, as illustrated in dotted lines in llig. 4. The pivot stud 95 ci' arm 18, lits loosely within the bore 96 so that when otherwise disengaged it will drop by gravity into vertical position within the .recess and always be out of the way when not in use, to limit the opening of the door. ihe bolt head 26 is clearly illustrated 2, 6 and 7. lt is 'formed with the usual e tace 102 and has a reduced neck por- .on 109 acjacent its outer end, forming a read 104 thereon. the neclr 108 between the 'li-hea d 104 and the main portion 26n is of a width slightly greater than the thickness or' the arm 18, so the latter may 'freely slide therein. An extension 105 is formed upon the plate 87 to eX- tend outwardly in front ot the recess 92, and this extension has a rounded or bevel tace 106 adapted to be engaged by the bevel face 102 oit the head 26 to force it inwardly against the action of spring 31 when the door is being closed. A bevel face 107 is also Ytermed on the arm 18 in horizontal alineinent with the :tace 106 to further torce the bolt inwardly over the edge of this arm when the door i being` closed and which, in elleet, is a continuation of the face 106when the arm 18 is normally hanging in its vertical position, as sho vn by dotted lines in l*1 4.

When it is desired to connect the bolt head 20 with the arm 1.8, the inner knob is rotated to the right in Figs, 1 and 2, and when the arm 47 of bell crank 41 engages the knob lug 49, the head will be in position where the reduced neel: portion 108 is in alineinent with the arni 18, then by opening the door the spaced sides 18l and 181 will engage within the space surrounding the neel: portion 10?), as illustrated in Fig. 4, carrying the arm 18 with the bolt. The limit of inward movement oi" the door will be reached when the outer end of the arm 18 rises to the level of the bolt` 10. 1n this position, and also trom the time that it starts to swing.; the arm 18 about its pivot, the 'lm-head 104 will extend across the slot 100 so the bolt cannot be withdrawn from its connection with the arm when the door opened, even slightly. From this it is clear that the bolt may be only connected with or disconnected from the arm 18 when the` door is closed; being connected by rotating the inner knob in one direction to withdraw it the proper distance to carry the arm 18 with it when the door is opened. To disconnect the bolt head 2G the arm 18 of the door iii-st closed and then the knob rotated ,in the in'oper direction to withdraw the bel" 10 its iull distance, as above described. It may be here n e tioned that the plate 87 is also recessed intermediate the recess 92 at its torward odge, as at 108, to allow passage of the T -hea l 104 when it .is in interlocking engagenient with the arin 18.

The connection between arms 109 and. 112 is such that the slightest moveinefit of the bolt 16 inwardly will eililect a .downward movement oil arm 109 so that its end .111 will innnediately engage in notch 1111. From the foregoing it is clear that when it is desired to eil'ect engagement ol' the bolt 16 with the arm 18, the door 10 is iirst closed and either the inner yor outer knob, or the lock 02 properly actuated to withdraw the bolt the proper distance to be in alinement for engagement with the arm 18 after which the door may be opened and securely held against further opening. After this it is necessary to close the door fully betere the bolt can be withdrawn from the arm. In case it is Vesired to prevent actuation et the lock when the door is open, so the door may not be closed and bolt 16 released from arm 18, the push pins 74 and 7 5 are inovedto the positions illustrated in Fig. 8, which prevents withdrawal of the bolt by the outside knob. After this is done the door is closed and the bolt 16 withdrawn the proper distance either by the inner knob or through the medium of the lock 02 to eltect its engagement with the arin 18 after which the door is opened. This withdrawal of the bolt 16, an intermediate distance, inoves the arin 112 rearwardly which permits engagement of the end 111 of arm 109 in notch 111, as illustrated in Fig. 3. After this, the push pin 75 may not be pushed in when the door is opened. It is clear that the bolt 16 may not be withdrawn at any time by the inside knob when the door is opened. Vhen the push pin 74 is in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, a person leaving the room may effect an eugagement of the bolt 16 with arm 18 by use of a key in the lock 62, as hereinbeiore described, without the necessity of using the outside knob which is locked against rotation.y
Instead of using the stop lug 49 to be engaged by the arm a7, of bell crank 41, to limit the throw ofthe bolt 16 in one direction and thereby effect its engagement with the arm 16, this lug may be dispensed with and the bell crank all left free to be thrown in either direction to withdraw the bolt 16 its full distance, while a positive, manual actuated mechanism may be provided to limit the throw of the bolt 16 whether the knob 15 is rotated in either direction. rIlhis arrangement I have illustrated in Fig. 6; and while this device will be suitable to accomplish my purpose, it will be obvious that other arrangements may be devised without departing from the principle. This device consists ofl a pin 120 slidably mounted in a bore 121, in the door 10, in a similar bore in the cover plate 122. It has a head 123, secured to its outer end, by means of which it may be pushed in inwardly this head also serving as a stop to limit its inward movement. The pin 120 is normally held in outward position, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 6, by the action of a leaf spring 12/1, secured at one end to the cover plate 122, by means of a rivet 125; its opposite end being' bifurcated to extend around the inner end of pin 120 and engaging a collar 126 lined thereon, spaced slightly from its inner endl;
The collar 126 also serves to engage the inner face of cover plate 122 to limit the outward movement of the pin. The pin may' be so mounted that its head 123 will' be adjacent the inner knob 15, so that .it may be pushed inwardly by the thumb of the hand which is used to turn the door knob. This will necessitate the use of only one hand` in effecting engagement of the bolt 16-with the arm 18.-

hile I have shown the preferred specific embodimentof my invention, I reserve the right to make such changes or modifications in structure as will properly come within the scope of the appended claims. For instance, a special type of lock may be designed.
to carry out the principles of my invention without the use of the particular lock mecha.- nism hereinbefore described; or it may be used or embodied in many of the well known `inner and outer knobs operate independent ly of each other.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination, a. door having ay bolt, a door knob operatively connected by means to actuate said bolt, a complementary locking plate adapted to be secured to the door easing and engageable by the bolt, a longitudinally slotted arm adapted to be pivotally mounted on the door casing intermediate the lock and locking plate, the bolt extending through the slot in the arm to engage the plate and having a portion adapted to interlock with the arm, the operative connection between the door knob` and.I bolt including means to withdraw the bolt from. the plate and arm to open the door when the knob is turned in. one direction and to withdraw the bolt an intermediate distance to clear the plate and effect an engagen'ient with the` arm to limit the opening of the door when the knob is turned in the opposite direction.

In combination, a door lock having a bolt, a door knob operatively connected to actuate' said bolt, a complementa-ry locking plate adapted to be secured to a door casing and engageable by the bolt, a longitudinally slotted arm adapted tobe'pivotally mounted on the door casing intermediate thelock and locking plate, the vbolt extending through the slot in the arm to engagethe plate and having a portion adapted to interlock with the arm, the arm` and bolt being engageable and disengageable only when the door is closed, the operative connection between the door knob and bolt including means to withdraw the bolt fromthe plate and arm to open the door when the knob is turnedfin one direction and to withdraw the bolt! an intermediate distance to clearl the plate and effect an en- Y bolt, inner and outer door knobs operatively connected to independently actuate said bolt, a complementary locking plate adapted to be secured to a door easing and engageable by the bolt, a longitudinally slotted arm adapted to be pivotally4 mounted on the door easing intermediate the lock and locking plate, the bolt extending through the slot in the arm to engage the plate and having a portion adapted to interlock with the arm, the said door knobs being operable to either withdraw the bolt from the plate and arm to open the door or to an intermediate distance to eiiiect its engagement with the arm to limit the opening of the door, and latching means in connection with the outer knob to prevent its operation to withdraw the bolt when it is in engagement with the arm.

In combination, a door lock having a bolt, inner and outer door knobs operatively connected to independently actuate said bolt, a complementary locking plate adapted to be secured to ai door easing and engageable by the bolt, a longitudinally slotted arm adapted to be pivotally mounted on the door casing intermediate the lock and looking plate, the bolt extending through the slot in the arm to engage the plate and having a port-ion adapted to interlock with the arm, the arm and bolt being engageable and disengageable only when the door is closed, the said door knobs being operable to either Withdraw the bolt from the plate and arm to open the door or an intermediate distance lto ei'lect its engagement with the arm to limit the opening of the door, and latching means in connection with the outer knobI to prevent its operation to withdraw the bolt when it is in engagement with the arm.
In combination, a door lock having a bolt, inner and outer door knobs operatively connected to independently aetuate said bolt, a complementary locking plate adapted to be secured to a. door easing and engageable by the bolt, a longitudinally slotted arm adapted to be pivotally mounted on the door casing intermediate the lock and locking plate, the bolt extending through the slot in the arm to engage the plate and having a portion adapted to interlock with the arm, the said door knobs being operable to either withdraw the bolt from the plate and arm to open the door or an intermediate distance to eiiiect its` engagement with the arm to limit the opening oi the door, latching means to prevent operation of the outer knob to withdraw the bolt, and means to prevent throwing oil' said latching means when the knob is in engagement with the arm.

In combination, a door lock having a bolt, inner and outer door knobs operatively coni'iected to independently aetuate said bolla, a complementary locking plate adapted to be secured to a door casing and engageable by the bolt, a longitudinally slotted arm adapted to be pivotally mounted on the door casing intermediate the lock and locking plate, the bolt extending through the slot in the arm to engage the plate and having a. portion adapted to interlock with the arm, the arm and bolt being engageable and disengageable only whenthe door is closed, the said door knobs being operable to either withdraw the bolt from the plate and arm to open the door or an intermediate distance to effect its engagement with the arm to limit the opening of the door, latehing means to prevent operation of the outer knob to withdraw the bolt, and means to prevent throwing off said latching means when the bolt is in engagement with the arm.

In combination, a door lock having a bolt, means to actuate said bolt, a complementary locking plate adapted to be secured to the door casing and engageable by the bolt, a slotted arm adapted to be pivotally mounted on the door casing intermediate the lock and locking plate, the bolt extending through the slot in the arm to engage the plate and having a portion adapted to'interlock with the arm, and means seleetivel operable to limit the throw of the bolt to eiect its engagement with the arm.

In combination, a door lock having a bolt, means to actuate said bolt, a complementary locking plate adapted to be secured to the door casing and engageable by the bolt, a slotted arm adapted to be pivotally mounted on the door casing intermediate the lock and locking plate, the bolt extending through the slot in the arm to engage the plate and having a portion adapted to interlock with the arm, and manually operable means selectively operable to limit the throw of the bolt to eifeet its engagement with the arm.

In combination, adoor lock having a bolt, a door knob operatively connected to actuate said bolt, a complementary locking plate adapted to be secured to a door casing and engageable by the bolt, a longitudinally slotted arm adapted to be pivotally mountedr on the door casing intermediate the lock and locking plate, the bolt extending through the slot in the arm to engage the plate and having a portion adapted to interlock with thFA arm, the door knob being operable to rwithdraw the bolt from the plate the full distance to open the door or an intermediate distance to effect its engagement with the arm to limit the opening of the door, and means selectively operable to limit the throw of the bolt to effect its engagement with the arm.
