SPRING END CONSTRUCTION.

This invention relates generally to a bed spring construction and more particularly to a bed spring construction especially adapted for detachable connect-ion to the end rails of 5 a folding bed of the type wherein the bed spring is placed under longitudinal tension to maintain the folded bed set-up. The present application is a division of the application of Newton N. Brown for F oldable beds, filed up and provides a support for the mattress.
Another object of the invention is to provide a spring construction which spaces the body of the spring from the frame of thebed so as to afford a proper yieldable support for the mattress and avoid engagement of the mattress with any rigid and unyielding part of the bed. r
A further object of the invention resides in the provisionof a spring having end bars or attaching members which also aflord a mount ing for end pieces adapted for use as head plates or foot plates. Another and important object is to provide a bed spring construction having these advantages and capacities and which is of simple and durable construction, reliable and effective in operation, and adapted to be manufactured at a comparatively slight expense from materials and by means of facilities ordinarily available.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a bed equipped with a spring construction em- I tion for the sake of illustration; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view of one corner of the bed frame and of the bed spring.
In the drawings, the frame of a bed is designated generally at F and while it may be of any suitable construction it is usually of the foldable type and is made up of a pair of sections each including an end rail 2 constituted of an angle iron anda foldable side rail 3 made up of pivotally connected channels. These sections of the bed frame are detachably connected to each other, that is, one end of the side rail of one section is interconnected with the end of an end rail of the other section by a headed stud and slot arrangement 4 shown in Figure 4; This foldable bed con struction is fully shown and described in the co-pending application of Newton NxBrown, Serial No. 165,779, above referred to and reference is made to the'prior application for a full disclosure of this construction.
A bed spring fabric 40 is provided and is so of such construction as to be resilient or elastic to some extent. In the spring'shown the body of the spring is made up of. interconnected links 41 and at each end of the body of the spring 40 retractile coil springs 42 are provided, the coil springs 42 having hooks 43 interconnected with the links of the body of the. spring and also having hooks 44 engageable with eyes or openings 45 provided therefor in the upstanding spring anchoring porac tions 46 of attaching members or plates designated generally at 47 provided at each end of the spring. The upstanding portion 46 of each attaching member 47 is reversely bent and may be of substantially or approximately U-shape and, as'shown, is preferably integral with a fiat attaching portion 48. In this way the anchoring portion 46 presents a rib-like structure on the attaching member acting to stiffen and reinforce the same. The attaching portion 48 and one leg of the upstanding portion 46 are formed with keyhole slots 4:9
(see Figure 4') which coact with headed studs fixed to and projecting up from the horizontal flange of each end rail.
In conjunction with the bed, an end piece 55, which may be used as a head plate as shown in Figure 1, or as a foot plate as shown in Figure 2, is provided and consists of a plate of metal or other suitable material which may be suitably reinforced around its edge, A plurality of mounting strips 56 are mounted on the end piece and have offset extensions 57 projecting beyond the lower end thereof at an angle and terminating in upturned lips 58. Portions of the extensions 57 of the strips 56 are designed to rest on the headed studs 50 and other portions thereof extend in through the notched or enlarged portions 49 of the slots 49 so that the lips 58 engage within the inverted U-shaped upstanding portion 46 of the attaching parts &7 to support the end piece in position.
WVith the end members or attaching members of the spring constructed in this manner they willretain their proper form and their capacity for easy and ready connection and disconnection with the end rails of the bed because they are designed and adapted to withstand effectively the rather heavy strains placed upon them due tothe action of the spring not only in sustaining the mattress but also in holding the bed set up. The flat attaching portion 48 hasa broad bearing on the end rail 2 and it is reinforced and strengthened by the inverted U-shaped anchoring section or portion 46, which has the free edge of its outer leg bearing on the end rail. This prevents any twisting strains being placed on the studs 50 and thus distortion is prevented.
Further, the spring anchoring portions 46 extend above the end rails and hence they space the body of the spring from the end rails to provide a full yielding support for the mattress. And each reversely bent anchoring portion 46 provides astructural shape of high inherent strength and stiffness.
Each spring attaching member, as thus constructed, may be and preferably is constituted of a single piece of metal which is sufliciently resilient to enable the attaching member to be shaped and constructed as described by means of suitable dies in an appropriate stamping or forging operation. The metal is, however, sufficiently stiff 'to impart to each attaching member adequate strength and rigidity when it is shaped and formed in the manner set forth.
The invention claimed is:
1. A foldable bed comprising a frame, headed studs on the frame, a spring having attaching members at its ends, said attachingmembers including a flat attaching portion and an upstanding portion of substantially U-shaped form, the attaching memmembers including a flat attachingportion and an upstanding portion of substantially U-shaped form, the attaching members having keyhole slots formed therein and designed to coact with the headed. studs of the frame to releasably secure the spring therein, said attaching members also having notches formed therein and communicating with cer-. tain of the keyhole slots, in combination with an end piece having supporting strips fixed thereto and provided with extensions having angularly projecting lips at their lower extremities, the angularly projecting lips being fitted in the notches and engaging the adjacent portions of the attaching member and the headed studs to. support the end piece in position.
3. A bed including a frame having headed studs on opposite portions thereof, and a spring having attaching members at its ends, each attaching member having a plate-like portion formed with keyhole slots cooperable with the headed studs and also having an upstanding,inverted U-shaped portion engageable with the frame and formed with means adapted for connection with the body of the spring.
4. In a foldable bed of the type having a spring formaintaining the bed setup and for supporting the mattress, a spring end construction made up of a single piece of metal and including an attaching portionadapted to be secured to the bed and an integral spring anchoring and reinforcing inverted U-shaped portion extending upwardly from the attaching portion and having its free end, extending downwardly toward the plane of the attaching portion, said inverted U-shaped portion having spring terminal receiving openings in its upper portion;
5. A spring attachingmember having an attaching portion adapted to be secured to a bed frame and also having an integral upwardly extending anchoring portion adapted to interconnect with a bed spring, said anchoring portion having openings therein designed to receive and inter-engage with supporting and attaching members of anend piece.
6. A bed including a'frame, a spring attaching member having a flat portion adapted to be secured to the frame and a portion adapted to be interconnected with a bed spring, an end piece and means for connecting said end piece to said attaching member.
7. A bed including a frame, a spring at taching member having a flat portion adapted to be secured to the frame and a portion adapted to be interconnected With a bed spring, an end piece and means for detachably connecting said end piece to said at- I taching member, said means including offset 10 extensions on the head piece adapted to interfit with notched portions of the attaching member.
