TWIN 00MB SECTION.
Application filed March 30, 1927. SerialNo. 179,610.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in beehives and has especial relation to comb sections for hives. f
An object of the present invention is to provide means for securing the foundation within the comb section without the use of expensive machinery now usually employed, the invention providing for attaching all four sides of the foundation seat to the section where a full foundation sheet is used, and
attaching three sides of the foundation wherea narrow sheet is used, while machine applied foundations are attached at two sides only.
Another object of the invention is to provide a two part section whose parts are substantially the same, and whose construction permits of a rapid and easy assemblage of the foundation and section in such manner that the bees will effectually cement the foundation to the section.
`With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of a comb section constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is an inside plan view of one member of the comb section frame spread out.
Figure 4t is a similar View of the other member.
Figure 5 is an enlarged section on the line 5 5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a like View on the line 6 6 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is a section similar to Figure 2 but showing a slightly different form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the comb section which constitutes the present invention is shown as comprising a pair of substantially complementa-l members 10 and 11. These members are of rectangular shape and may be formed of any suitable material and constructed in any preferred manner. For example, each member 10 and 11 may be formed of a strip of wood which is provided with spaced transverse beveled notches or kerfs 12 so as to permit of the strip being bent into rectangular form, the ends of the strip being connected by means of a dove tail joint 13. The members 10 and 11 are designed to be arranged in edge to edge formation as `shown in Figures l, 2 and 7 of the drawings and to have clamped between their adjacent edges the foundation sheet 14. In Figure 7 of the drawings the opposed edges ofthe members l0 and 11 are iush and the foundation sheet is clamped between these edges and has its eXtreme edges bent over as shown at 15'. When placed within the super or section holder, the bees will cement or seal the edges of the members l0 and 11 to the foundation sheet so that the parts will be effectually connected.
Asillust-rated in Figures 1 to 6 of the drawings, the adjacent edges of the sections 10 and 11 are oppositely inclined or beveled as shown at 16, shoulders 17 being provided along the inner edges of the bevel. These beveled edges will thus overlap one another and will clamp between them the foundation sheet 14 as shown in Figure 2. rThe bees will likewise elfectually cement or seal the edges of the members 10 and 11 to the foundation sheet.
The sections may be cut away as shown at 18, so that when they are clamped within the super or section holder by springs, openings will be provided between the sections for the passage of the bees, as is usual in devices of this character.
By means of the construction shown and described, it will be seen that all four of the edges of the foundation sheet may be securely clamped in place, where a full foundation sheet is used, or three of the edges clamped in place where a narrow sheet is used. The sheet will thus be more securely attached within the frame of the comb section than is usually the case with machine attached foundations. Further, the foundations may be quickly and conveniently attached.
rilhe invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is In a bee hive, a coinbsection formed of a pair of rectangular complemental members adapted to be arranged in edge to edge relation, the adjacent edges of the respective 5 members being reduced to form tapered telescoping extensions arranged in spaced confronting relation, a foundation sheet inter'- posed between the edges and clamped between said telescoping extensions, and the marginal edge of said sheet being bent downwardly l0 against the outer surface of one of said eX- tensions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN YATER.
