Description

CASEMENT WINDOW Filed March 29, 1928 INVENTOR .//4-17 J y/=4 4 14 ATTORNEY Patented July 23, 1929.
UNITED STATES HUGO SEIBOLD, F GLENDALE, LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK.
CASEMENT WINDOW.
Application filed March 29, 1928.
The object of the present invention is to provide a casement window so constructed as to be both wind and water-tight, the elements of the window being so formed and related that they may be constructed of either wood or metal and assembled preliminary to placement in the window openings provided for that purpose in the buildings.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the embodiment of the invention from within the building;
Figure 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged detailed sectional view showing the relationship of the window and casement frame at the hinged portions thereof.
The casement comprises a main frame having a header 1, side frame members 2, 2 and base frame member 3, which may be formed with an outer sill projection 3". A lintel frame 4 may be carried by header 1 above which may be secured the lintel 5 with a downwardly extending cross piece 6. The outer wall of header 1 at its lower edge is formed with a rabbet so as to provide a lower shoulder a and an upper shoulder Z) for a purpose hereinafter to be explained. Base frame member 3 is formed at its outer face at the upper portion thereof with a rabbet, thus providing a shoulder 0 and a second shoulder (l.
The window of the easement comprises the vertical window members 7, 7 the lower member 8 and the upper member 9. The lower member is double rabbeted providing two horizontal shoulders corresponding with shoulders 0 and (Z of base frame member 3. The upper window member 9 is formed in its top surface with a channel thus providing two shoulders corresponding with the shoulders a and Z) of the frame header 1. Member 7 is provided on its outer vertical edge with a channel to correspond with a similar channel formed in vertical frame member 2 so that the two members have a shoulder abutment at e and a second shoulder abutment at f.
Vertical window member 7 X is formed with a longitudinally extending channel of the formation shown more particularly in Figs.
Serial No. 265,560.
3 and 1. This channel provides a shoulder g which abuts the outer face of frame mem her 2*, the frame member being formed with a vertical groove of such formation as to form a shoulder h which is abutted by the inner face of window member 7*. Thus the hinged portion of the window is protected by double shoulder engagement between the casement frame and the window frame. The hinges, of which one is shown in Fig. 3, may have their wings inserted in slots in the members 2", 7 If pin hinges are used, removal of the pins will not enable opening of the window when window frame member 7 is latched on the inside to vertical frame member 2 because of the interlocking of mem bers 2 7*, as will be seen from inspection of Fig. 3.
At the inner wall of the building and adjacent to the easement opening, in abutment with finishing member 10, and resting upon inner sill 13 may be placed the inner frame members 14, 14* at the top of which is the cross piece 15. These members may at their outer edges lie in abutment with the mouldings 16. Hinged to frame member 1 1 is a window or screen frame 17, each vertical. member of which may be formed with two shoulders i, is, the latter lying in abutment with the finishing pieces 10 and the shoulders 2' lying in abutment with inner frame members 14, lt respectively.
It will be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that the easement window at its top is sealed against the admission of water by the double shoulder contact with header 1 and is shielded by the lintel frame. The base of the window is likewise sealed by double shoulder contact with outer sill 3*. The vertical window frame member 7 is sealed by double shoulder contact with member 2 and the vertical window frame member 7 is sealed at its hinge connection with frame member 2 by the two shoulders g and h. Exterior of members 2 and 2 may be placed the lining members 18 which members may be connected by tongue and rabbet with casement frame members 2, 2".
The casement as a whole may be assembled prior to its insertion in the easement opening of the building and its construction is par,- ticularly adapted for Wooden easements. lVarping is prevented by the interlocking of members 7 52 and by the double shoulder engagement between the other contacting elements of the Window and its surrounding frame members.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows 1-- In building construction and in combination. with a casement opening the Walls of which comprise an outer rectangular section and a comn'iunicating inner rectangular section of lesser transverse area, atl'ording opposed vertical Shoulders intermediate said sections, of a casement window comprising a rectangular outer casement frame having its vertical side members 2* abutting said shoulders a rectangular linerframe connected to the easement frame, both window frame and the easement frame being channelled providing a plurality of shoulders abutting at the sides and at the top and bottom of said frames When in engagement, means for hinging one side of the Window frame to the easement frame, a rectangular liner 10, 11, 12 projected inwardly of the outer casement frame and lining the casement opening of lesser transverse area, inner frame members 13, 14, 14 l5-and inner casement window frame 17 hinged thereto.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
HUGO SEIBOLD.
