This invention relates to derricks of a type adapted particularly for securing in a window opening of a building and operable from hoist material through such opening, the invention having for an esesntial objectthe Construction of a substantial, poi-table, and adjustablc support for the derrick for securing the same within the window opening and which may be easily moved, transported, and re-erected in different windows of the building.
A further object is to provide a boom for the derrick which is normally arranged in a substantially horizontal position whereby to extend outwardly from the mast thereof and adapted to be automatically moved into an upper or substantially vertical position as the load carried by the boom reachcs or approaches the window opening so as to permit the boom and the load to be swung inwardly to within the building.
A further object comprises the arrangement of supporting rods, braces and clamps for securely retaining the derrick in position within the window opening, and including a support extending within the building adapted for attaching a platform mounting a hoisting winch for Operating the cable carried by the boom, said winch being provided with a combined clutch and brake mcchanism arranged upon the opposite movement thereof to engage the drum of the winch for hoisting the cable attached thereto, or for releasing the clutch and applying the brake when the cable is desired to be lowered.
A still further object is to provide an apparatus of this character of simple and practical Construction, strong and durable, efiicient in performance, adapted to be easily and securely attached in operative position and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special Construction and combination of the various elements forming the invention, reference being had to the accompanywithin the same whereby to th ing drawings forming a part hereof, whereim Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View rough a window opening showing the apparatus in elevation Secured in position for operation therein.

eferring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my nvention, I provide a derrick comprismg a mast 5, preferably constructed of a pair of telescopic sections, each of said sections having openings 6 cxtending transversely therethrough for receiving a pin 7 whereby to secure the sections in adjusted extended position. The lower end of the mast 5 is seated within one section of a tubular T-joint 8, invertedly arranged with its horizontal section 9 slidably carried on a horizontally disposed rod 10, the horizontal section of said joint and the rod also having openings 11 formed transversely therein for receiving a pin 12 whereby to secure the joint in longitudinally adjusted position with respect to said rod. The rod 10 extends through a window or other suitable opening indicated generally at 13 and disposed above the sill 14 thereof, the inner and i outer ends of the rod carry clamping mem' I' ries a tu ular T-joint 19 having its horizontal section 20 slidably carried on an upper horizontal rod 21 extending through the op ositesides of the window opening, sad ro and said joint being likewseprovded with transverse opening for recevng a pn whereby to secure said parts in adjusted position. i
The upper joint 19 is also provided wth a tubular lateral extension 22 extending at right angles to the horizontal section 20 thereof and adapted to receive one end of a v sectional' i telescoping horizontally disposed rod 23 extending crosswise at the upper end of the window opening and having its opposite end provided with a pair ot clamping members 24, similar in constructon to the clamping members 15 heretofore descrbed and arranged for gripping relation wth the opposite side of the building wall. The joints 19 also carry a pair of such clamping members 25 also arranged ingrippng relation with the opposite faces of the build-v ing wall, -it thus being noted that the mast 5 is firmly retained in position at ts upper end by a set of such clamps engagng the building wall at each side of the window opening and at its lower end by a similar set of clamps. The sections of the horizontal 'crosswise extending rod 23 at the upper end of' the window are provided with transversely extending openings 26 for receiving' pins 27 wherebvto secure the sections of the rod i-n adjusted position and permttng the use of the apparatus in window openings of varying widths.
The sections of the horizontal rod 23 may be threadedly engaged and adapted for longitudinal adjustment with each other by means of a force nut 23.' carried on one section whereby to enable such section to be threaded into or out of said 'other section.
A boom supporting collar 28 is slidablycarried on the mast 5, being supported on the upper edge of the joint 8. The collar has a series of transverse openings register-ing with the openings 6 of the mast for receiving a supporting pin 7' whereby to secure the collar in adjusted vertical position. An oifset 29 is `formed on the collar through which extends a vertically disposed bore adapted to rotatably carry a pin 30 therein, the upper end of the pin being formed into carried a grappling hook 46.

A boom is formed of telescoping sections having transverse openings 34 for receiving pins 35 whereby to secure the sections in adjusted extended position, the outer end of the boom having a pulley wheel housing 36 formed thereon. As shown in Figure 8 of the drawing, the housing 36 may be formed separately from the boom 33 and threadedly Secured in position thereon. The outer end of the housing is provided with a guy rope attaching tip 36' which may be used for swinging the boom.
.A shaft 37 is arrangedtransversely in the housing upon which is rotatably carried a longitudinally slit pulley wheel 38 having the sections thereof Secured to each other by bolts or the like 39. The abutting faces of the sections forming the pulley wheel have spaced parallel flanges 40 formedthereon providing a channel, 41 therebetween at the center of the pulley wheel and within which is disposed a ring 42 adapted to rotate inde pendently of the wheel by means of ball bearings 43 interposed between the ring and the base of the channel formed in the pulley wheel. The opposite sides of the housing 36 are open through which may be extended a hoisting cable 44 having a section of chain 45 attached to one nd thereof on which is I The outer periphery of the ring 42 is formed into a circumferential groove constituting a seat for receiving the cable 44 over which the cable is adapted to 'travel during the hoisting operation without interfering with the movement of the pulley wheel 38 or tending to cause the movement of such pulley during the operation of the cable.
The sides of the sections of the pulley 38 are extended to form a drum 48 to which is attached one end of a boom elevating cable 49,-the opposite end of which is attached to a hook 50 carried on a collar 51 Secured adjacent the upper end of the mast 5. Thus it will be apparent that as the load attached to the hook 46 approaches the boom so that the chain 45 will rotate the pulley in a manner heretofore :explained, the pulley thereupon will wind the cable 49 about itself so as to raise the outer end of the boom upwardly and permit the same together with the load to be swung through the window opening to the interior of the building. v
The cable 44 is extended through guides 52 formed on eollars 53 and 54 attached to the boom, said collar 54 having cars 55 formed thereon and having openings through which bolts may be inserted for attaching the collar at the pivoted end of the boom. A pulley wheel 56 is carried by the collar 54 about which* the cable 44 extends in a direction toward the interier ot' the building where the same is adapted to be wound about a drum 57 rotatably mounted on a winch frame 58 Secured to the inner end of the rod 10. The drum may be operated -in the usual manner by a worm wheel 59 engaged by a worm GO carried on a shaft 61 to which is attached a crank 62.
A combined clutch and brake mechanism is interposed in the drive shaft (31, the shatt being sectionally eonstructed and having its adjacent ends provided with suitable clutch members (33 adapted to be moved into or out of engagement with each other whereby to transmit the power from one section ot the shatt to the other, one of the clutch members being provided with a throw out collar 64 rotatably carried in a groove formed therein and having studs (35 extending laterally therefrom at opposite sides and engaged in slotted openings 'o'med in one end of a bell crank 66 having its opposite ends pivoted at 67 to a shaft extending through the winch frame and on the opposite ends of which are attached control levers 68 whereby to permit the operation of the bellcrank from either side of the winch.
The section of the shaft 61 connected directly with the drum has the clutch member carried thereon formed into a brake drum 69 about which is arranged a brake band 70 and operatively connected at 71 to the bell crank whereby to cause the' brake band to tightly engage the b'ake drum up0n the movement of the bellcrank in a direction to disengage the clutch member.
The winch trame 58 is formed into setions including a base section 72 which is fixedly attached to the rods 10 upon which the winch trame proper 58 is mounted and pivotally attached thereto by a bolt 73 at one end permitting the horizontal swinging movement of the opposite end thereof whereby to enable the angular adjustment of the winch with respect to the rod 10 and the hoisting mechanism. The wnch frame 58 may be Secured at its swingingend to the base in adjusted position by means of bolts 74. the shank of which slides in a channel 74' formed in the adjacent end of the base section and defining the limitations of the movement of the bolt and thus prevent the swinging of the winch trame beyond a cering mast, a boom tain predetermined distance, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 4.
The head of the unit having a coneaved upper surface as indicated at 75 in Figs. 3 and 4 for the purpose of receiving the lower end of a shoring member which extends upwardly for bracing against the ceiling of the roon so as to eliminate vibrations at the winch end' of ,the frame during the hoisting of heavy loads.
It is believed the manncr of operation of the apparatus will be thoroughly understood from the foregoing description without necessitating a detailed explanation ot' the coact-ion between the various parts.
It is obvious that the invention is susceptible to various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed, and I accordingly claim all such forms of the device to which I am entitled.
I claim l. A derrick comprising a boom supporting mast, a boom mounted thereon for Vertical swinging movement, a pulley arranged at the outer end of the boom and including a drum and a ring mounted for independent rota tion, said ring having a circumterential groove formed therein, a hoisting cable adaptcd to seat within said groove, operable remote therefrom, a cable attachable to the mast and adapted to be wound about said drum and means earried at the end of said first named cable and engageable with the drum whereby to operate the same so as to cause the vertical movement of said boom.
2. A derrick comprising a boom supportmounted thereon for vertical swinging movement, a pulley arranged at the outer end of the boom and including a drum and a ring arranged for independent rotation, said ring having a circumterential groove formed thereabout, a hoisting cable adapted to seat within said groove, Operating means for the cable, a chain attached to the end of the cable, flanges formed on said drum in spaced relation and providing a channel therebetwecn, shoulders formed on the Opposed faces of said flanges and adapted to be engaged by the links of the chain whereby to cause the rotation of the drum and a boom elevating cable having one end attached to the mast With its opposite end arranged to be wound about said drum.

An apparatus of the class described comprising a boom supporting mast having a boom mounted thereon for vertical and horizontal swinging movement, said mast and boom having a load hoisting cable operatively associated therewith, and a boom hoisting cable operatively connecting the boom and the mast and normally inactive during the initial hoisting action of the first named cable and adapted during a predeterbolt 73 is formed into a 4.
