Description
C. WINKLER July 9, 1929.
MOLD FOR CASTING STEREOTYPE PLATES Filed May 19, 1928 Patented July 9, 1929 PATENT OFFICE.
CARL WINKLER, OF BERN, SWITZERLAND.
MOLD FOR CASTING STEREOTYPE PLATES.
Application filed May 19, 1928, Serial No. 279,199}, and in Germany December 13, 1926.
My present invention relates to a mold or box such as is used for casting stereotype plates, particularly for printing illustrations, having an insulating layer such as paper, or
8 the like, on the core. According to my invention one end of the insulating sheet is clasped by a spring lock, and the other end is wound around a spindle that can be turned by an easily accessible hand-wheel that can 10 be held in any angular position by a ratchet and pawl, or similar device.
By means of this device the insulating sheet is kept stretched in such a manner that the stereotype plate cast in the box receives an absolutely smooth surface.
In the drawing illustrating my invention Fig. 1 shows a section through the box, and Fig. 2 a top View, and part section, of one end of the same.
The mold or box consists, as usual, of a bed a provided with a water jacket for cooling, and of a core 6 that is also adapted to be internally cooled by water. The space 0 between these two parts a, Z) forms the mold. In the bed a is placed, in the usual manner,
the matrix from which a cast is to be made,
but this matrix is not shown in the drawing.
The core I) is covered by an insulating sheet (Z the left end of which, in the drawing, is held by a lock 6 formed of two bars pressed together by a. spring, while the right end is wound on the spindle f. On this spindle is fastened a ratchet wheel 9 in which engages a pawl h. Farther, on the end of the spindle, is fastened a hand-wheel i that is easily 210- cessible.
By turning the hand-wheel i the insulating sheet can be stretched smooth, and the pawl and ratchet-wheel prevent the stretched sheet from becoming loose again.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A mold or box for casting stereotype plates comprising in combination a bed containing the matrix, a core, an insulating sheet stretched on said core, a lock to hold one end of said sheet, a spindle on which the other end of said sheet is wound, means to turn said spindle, and means to keep said spindle in the required angular position, substantially as, and for the purpose, set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CARL WINKLER.
