CHAIR CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed August 21, 1928. Serial No. 301,091.
The invention relates to a chair construction. i
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive easy chair adapted to be readily arranged to form a couch.
A further ob] ect of the invention is to provide a combined easy chair and folding couch of this character provided with a hinged back which may be lowered into a horizontal position to form one end of the couch and provided with a hinged arm frame capable of being swung forwardly and downwardly in advance of the base frame of the chair to form the front section of the couch.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined easy chair and couch in which the upholstery of the back -will take the place of a rear section of a mattress and it will be necessary only to provide a mattress Voftwo sections to fit the arm frame and the base frame when the chair is unfolded to form a couch.
Another object of the invention is to construct the baseframe, the hinged back and the hinged arm frame so that when the chair is unfolded to form a couch the parts will abut compactly together and the upper face ofthe lower back will be arranged in substantially the same plane yas the upper edges of the base frame and the arm-frame. Y
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, andfset forth in the-claims appended hereto, it being understood that various changes in the form, size, and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may beV resorted to Vwithout departing from the spirit `ofthe invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.V
In the drawings l Figure 1 is a plan view of acombined easy chair and couch constructed in accordance with this invention, the parts being arranged to form a couch.
Fig. 2 is alongitudinal sectional view of the combined easy chair and couch showing in full lines the` arrangement 0f the vparts to form an easy chair and in dotted lines to form a couch. v
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2'.
Fig'. 4 is a detail perspective. view of the hinged arm frame.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective viewillustrating the construction of one `of the rear corners of the chair.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the mattress.
Fig. 7 is a side view of the same.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention the combined easy chair and couch comprises inits construction a base frame 1, a hinged back 2 and a hinged arm frame 3, the back being adapted to swing downwardly from an upright position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 ofthe drawing to the dot and dash line position in said figure and the arm frame 3 beingl adapted to swing forwardly and downwardly to the dot and dash line position in Fig. 2 to convert the easy chair into a couch.' The hase frame 1 which is substantially rectangular is composed of sides 4, front and rear connectinor cross pieces 5 and 6 and front 'and rear legst?? and 8. The cross pieces 5.and 6 are composed of pieces of a width less than the pieces which form the sides of thebase frame andthe upperedges of the front and rear cross pieces terminate short of the upper edges of the sides4 toy form front and rear transverse recesses 9 and 10. The
front recess 9 provides a space for the accommodation of a mattress l1 when the parts of the easy chair `are arranged to form a cou'ch and the rear recess 10 provides a space to receive the hinged back of the chair when the said back is swung downwardly tothe dot and dash line positionillustrated in Fig. 2. The rear legs 8 are provided at their upper ends with a recess 12 located at the rear faces of the legs 8 and forming corner recesses to cooperate withthe lower cornerrecesses 13 of the sides 14 of the hinged back and the recessed portions of the legs 8 and the sides 14 of the hinged back intert when the back of the chair is swung downwardly to kform l a couch. y
The back of the chair is, composed of the saidsides and upper Vand lower connecting cross pieces'l and 16, the open space 17'shown in the drawings and dened by the upper` and lower cross pieces and the sides of the hinged back being adapted to receive any suitable upholstery which in practice will form one section of the cushion of the couch Vwhen the back of the chairis swung downwardly to the f dot and dash line position in Fig. 2 of the drawings. "When the back is swung kdownwardly its upper upholstered face is substany tially `in flush `relation with the plane vof the as to extend below the upper edges of the cross pieces of the main frame to provide a mattress or cushion receiving space, and a substantially U-shaped arm frame arranged upon the base frame and composed of spaced sides and a rear connecting bar arranged at the bottom of the sides of the arm frame, the front of the U-shaped frame being open to provide an entirelv open cushion or mattress receiving space above the front cross bar of the main frame when the chair is folded, the said arrn frame being hinged at the front ends of the sides to the base frame and adapted to swing downwardlv and forwardly in advance of the base frame to form a front section.A
3. A oldable chair construction comprising al base frame, a back pivoted to the base frame, another frame pivoted on the base frame at the front of the latter, said other frame having posts each having an inclined edge and arranged to form rigid supporting legs when said other frame is swung downwardlv in advance of the base frame to support said other frame 'in horizontal relation with the base frame, said posts presenting their inclined edges to the back frame in parallelism with the back frame and relatively close thereto to'provide a substantially closed compact corner structure for the chair when the latter is folded.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set mvhand this 25th day of July, 1928.
