This invention relates to toy mixing ma chines.
An object of the invention is to provide a toy in the form of a. mixing machine, having all the necessary means for producing con crete and the like, and in which the various parts of the machine are made up of heavy pressed sheet metal formed and spot-welded together to provide a strong and efficient arrangement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine of the character referred to in which a revolving mixing drum is utilized, said drum being made up of sheet metal and so mounted that the same may be readily removed from the machine to provide access to the interior of the drum should it become necessary to remove material therefron'i that might harden on the lnterior.

Another object of the invention is to provide a discharge chute for the drum in con nection with a movable conveyor for transferring the agitated material from thedrum to the discharge chute.
Other and further objects and advantages of this invention will more fully and clearly appear from the description and claims hereinafter following.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is provided a platform or frame indicated broadly at 10. The frame is made up of top and bottom plates 11 and 12 of pressed sheet metal, the plates being spaced apart by means of side and end channel members 1313, and 14, the upper and lower plates being spot-welded to the outer surfaces of the opposite flanges of the channel members. The plate 12 is provided with longitudinally extending cut out portions 15-15.
the metal of the plate at adjacent sides of the cut-out portions being turned at an angle to the plate to provide strengthening ribs or flanges 16-16, the cut-out openings being arranged to provide clearance for parts of the drum mounting, hereinafter more fully described. The forward portion of the plate 12 is provided'with a spider 17, having its legs spot-welded to the plate 12 as best shown in Figure 2. A. center pin in the form of a rivet is provided which pivotally connects to the spider the front bolster 18. The bolster 18 is of pressed sheet metal of substantially channel formation having ears 19-19, at the opposite ends thereof in which the axle prop er indicated at 20 is journaled, said axle being provided with suitable rollers, in this case made up of cast iron. Spot-welded to the forward portion of the bolster 18 is a support 21, to the outer end of which pivotally connected a tongue indicated at 22 by which the apparatus may be drawn. The rear portion'of the plate 12 has rigidly spot-welded thereto a bolster member similar to the bolster 18, there being an axle ournaled in said bolster and provided with suitable rollers indicated at 3 at its ends. The upper plate 11 is'angularly off-set at its rear end to provide a step 24, the step being supported by side pieces indicated at 25 which are spot-welded to the side channel members of the frame. The forward portion of the plate 11 is cut out as indicated at l1 for a. purpose presently to be described.
On the upper forward portion of the plate 11 is a plurality of uprights 26-26. each of which uprights is of channel formation, and has a flange 29 spot-welded to the plate 11. The upper extremities of the uprights are connected by side channel members 30-3O which extend outwardly beyond the uprights at one side of the machine, the free ends of the mem bers being connected by a crosspiece 31, while the opposite end of said members terminate flush with the related uprights, the latter and the side members being con nected by an angular plate 32 as shown. Means are provided for mounting the drum 34 for revolving movement, said means including a pair of spaced transverselyextending cylindrical rods 48-48, each of which has its ends extended through theside channel members 1313, where said ends are secured in place by suitable nuts 19. Rot-atably mounted upon each of the rods 48 is a pair of spaced rollers 5050, each of said rollers be ing provided with a flange 51, the flange of each roller being disposed on the outside of the flanges of the caps 88 and 45, as best shown in Figure 4. The rollers 50 are held against spreading movement with respect to each other by meanssot collars fi -52, each of which is secured to the rod upon which it is mounted by means of a suitable pin or rivet. The arrangement is such that the flanges ll and 43 at each side of each of the gears 42 and 46 provide a circular tread which bears upon the rollers 50 to permit revolving movement of the drum thereon;
The drum 34 is maintained in position by means of holders 53, one of which is secured to one of the longitudinal braces 33" and the other of which is adapted to be secured to the other of the longitudinal braces 38. Each of the holders 53 includes a longitudinally extending web portion secured to one of the braces 33 by means of suitable bolts, each web portion having downwardly projecting, longitudinally spaced channel-shaped legs 54 5i, the flanges which go to make up the channel formation of each leg extending one on each side of the adjacent gear on the drum, as best shown in F ures 1 and 2 ot the drawings, each of the legs 54 being provided with a roller 55 ournaled between the flanges of the leg and bearing upon the flanges disposed at each side of the adjacent gear on the drum. By this arrangement it will beappreciated that the holding members 53 may be detached by loosening; the bolts, thereby freeing the drum from the operating mechanism when it is removed from the machine.
A trough 56 is provided, the inner end of which is adapted to project into a chute 57, which is disposed in the opening 39 in the cap 45, said trough having spaced cars 58 adjacent its inner end which are pivotziilly supported upon a rod 59, carried by sheet metal brackets (SO-60 secured to the adjacent upri'ghts 26. The side of the drum opposite to the trough 56 is provided with a discharge chute 67, said chute being supported when in operative position by means of a plate 68 extending between the bottom portions of the adjacent uprights, the plate 68 being provided with upstanding flanges between which the chute is received, said chute being held in position by means of bolts indicated at 69. The rear portion of the chute is provided with a pair of arms indicated at 70, and pivotally connected to the inner ends of said arms are cranks 71, which is turn are connected to a conveyor 72. The chute 67 is also provided with upstanding portions 73 in which is rotatably .mounteda crank shaft 7 f provided with cranks 75, the ends of said cranks being pivotally connected through the medium of links 76 with the crank arms 71 on the conveyor. By this arrangement it will be appreciated that the conveyor and ope ating mechanism therefor may be readily detached to permit the drum 3 1 to be withdrawn. A handle 75 is provided for rotating the crank shaft 74:, which through the me-- dium of the links 76 rocks the conveyor 72 upon the pivotal connection thereof with the chute proper.
At the rear of the platform means are provided for revolving the drum and for rotating the shaft 63 to raise and lower the trough 56. Said means include a pair of standards 77-77 in which are rotatably journaled theends of a shaft 78, said shaft having mounted adjacent one end a gear 79 adapted to mesh with the gear l6 on the drum, the oposite end portion of the shaft being provided with a similargear 79 adapted to mesh the gear 42 on the drum. Mounted on the shaft so as to be movable therewith is a clutch part 80, adapted to cooperate with a clutch part 81 rigidly associated with a winding spool or drum 82 which is slidably mounted upon the shaft 7 8. The spool or drum 82 is provided with a guideat one side, adapted. for the reception of one end. 81 of a clutch lever 85, which lever is pivotally mounted upon a bracket 86 for pivotal movement. The lever is maintained in the desired position by spaced ears adapted to receive the angular portion of the shaft therebetween, whereby the handle 93 may be swung to an inoperative position. A cable 9 L leads from the drum 82 to the spool 66, the cable 94: being adapted to be wound upon the drum 66 in a direction opposite to that in which the cables 61 are wound upon the pulleys 63.
An imitation boiler and other appurtenances made up of sheet metal are provided, being secured to the plate 13 of the platform.
In operation the toy is used for actually producing concrete, and in this connection, assuming the trough 56 to be in lowered position as shown in Figure 1, cement, sand, gravel, etc., are placed into the trough 56, and the proper quantity of water run into the trough from the tank 66. The clutch lever is then moved to the position shown in Figure 3, clutching the drum or spool 82 to the shaft 78. The handle 93 is then moved to position whereby rotation thereof will effect rotation of the shaft 88, rotating the gear wheel asso ciated therewith, which in turn rotates the shaft 78 and the drum which is clutched thereto. Through the medium of the ccble 94-, the shaft 64: will be rotated in a clockwise direction, due to unwinding of the cable from the'pulley 66, whichwill wind the cables 61 upon the pulleys 63, thereby bringing about elevation of the trough 56 to such an extent that the material in the trough slides downwardly into the revolving drum, where the material is agitated by the baffle plates 32 until thoroughly mixed and intermingled, a quantity of said material being delivered to the conveyor or hopper 7 2 by means of the buckets 37, and when it is desired to withdraw the material from the drum, the handle 75* is rotated in a counter-clockwise direction to tilt the conveyor forwardly as best shown in Figure causing the mixed material to issue from the said hopper and the chute 67. During this operation the drum is being constantly rotated, due to the interengagement of the gears 7 979 with the gears 42 and 4:6 on the drum. When the-trough is at its uppermost elevation and has discharged its contents into the drum, the elevating mechanism is disconnected from the driving mechanism by moving the clutch lever in an oppo site direction, thereby freeing the drum 82 from the shaft 78, pern'iitting said shaft and the gears associated therewith to revolve the drum 3st without any further effect upon the hoisting mechanism.
It will be appreciated that by the above described arrangement a toy machine is provided which includes all the elements which are necessary in producing concrete on a miniature scale.
iVhile I have herein shown and described what 1 now consider the preferred manner in carrying out my invention, the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a mixing machine the combination with a wheeled platform including a sup porting frame work thereon; of a hollow drum having a central opening at one end; a feed trough swingable about one end portion and adapted to direct material into said drum through the central opening thereof; means for mounting said drum for revolution; means for driving said drum to revolve the same, said means being adapted in certain position of the parts to operate said feed trough and swing the same about its pivot; said driving means including winding elements, with reversed connections whereby unwinding of certain connections elii'ects Winding of certain other connections to cause movement of said. feed trough in the desired direction.
2. In a device of the character describech the combination with a revolvable drum including a cylindrical section of sheet metal; of ring gears disposed about the exterior of said drum, said gears being formed of stamped sheet metal; a cap fitted about one end of said cylindrical section and having a flange thereon against which said gear bears said cap being rlgldly affixed to said cylindrical section; and a supporting member rigidly afiixed to said cylindrical section and provided with a flange bearing against the opposite side of said gear to support the same.
In a device of the character described, the combination with a revolvable drum including a cylindrical section of sheet metal; of ring gears disposed about the exterior of said drum, said gears being formed of stamped sheet metal; a cap fitted about one end of said cylindrical section and having a flange thereon against which said gear bears; said cap being rigidly aliixed to said cylindrical section; a supporting member rigidly affixed to said cylindrical section and provided with a flange bearing against the opposite side of said gear to support the same, the flange on said cap and the flange on said supporting member extending outwardly a suitable distance to provide a circumferential tread portion.
a. In a mixing machine, the combination with a supporting platform: of spaced pairs of rollers mounted on said platform; a drum comprising a central cylindrical member made up of sheet metal; ring gears arranged in spaced relation about the exterior surface of said drum, each of said gears being made up of pressed sheet metal supporting means arranged at opposite sides of said gears, said means including flanges disposed at opposite sides of each of said said flanges supporting said gears and extending beyond the same to provide tread portions for cooperation with said rollers.
5. In a mixing machine, the combination vond said glears to provide circiuuferen Ul with. a supporting platform; of spaced pairs of rollers mounted on said platform; a drum comprising a central cylindrical member made up of sheet metal; ring gears arranged in spaced relation about the exterior surface of said drum, each of said gears being made p of pressed sheet metal; supporting means arranged at opposite sides of said gears, said means including flanges disposed at opposite sides of each of said gears, said flanges supporting said gears and extending beyond the same to provide thread portions for eoopera tion with said rollers; and removable means secured to the frame work on said platform and adapted to bear upon the thread portions of said drum.
(3. In a mi, ing machine, the combination with a Wheeled platform including a support ing frame work thereon; of a mixing drum mounted on said platform and having an opening therein; a feed trough swingi-ible about one eml'portimi and adapted to direct material into said drum through the opening thereof; drive means; and means for swingingsaid feed trough about its pivoted end said means including a shaft mounted upon said frame work and a cable leading from said shaft to said feed trough, said cable being adapted to be wound on said shaft in one direction; and a cable secured to said shaft and adapted to be wound thereon in the opposite direction, said cable leading to said driving means, whereby unwinding of one of said cables *ith respect to said shaft causes winding of the other cable on said shaft.
7. In a toy mixing machine of the character described, the combination with a plat-form having a frame worx mounted thereon; of a hollow, drum provided with external circumferentially disposed ring gears; means pro jecting beyond said gears to provide circumferential tread portions; circumi'icrentially spaced rollers upon which sait tread portions are adapted to revolve; and means engaging said gears for revolving said drum.
8. In a toy mixing machine of the character described. the combination with a platform having a frame work mounted thereon;
of a mixing drum provided with annular ars fitting about the exterior periphery of said drum; means pro ecting outwardly betrcad portions; circumferentially spaced groups of rollers upon which said tread portions are adapted to travel; and brackets mounted on said frame worl: and provided with circumferent-ially spaced portions opposed to said rollers and having means cooperating with the tread portions of said drum to maintain said drum in position; and means for dr'ving said drum.
9. In a toy mixing machine. the combination ith a supporting platform having a frame work mounted thereon: of a mixing drum provided with circumferentially ex tending gears; means on said drum 1 roviding tread portions extending outwardly beyond said gears; circumferentially spaced roller means n'iounted on said platforn'i upon which the said circumferential tread portions bear; bracket members mounted upon said frame work and provided with means circumferentially spaced with respect to said drum,v said spaced means bein provided with rollers bearing on said tread portions to maintain said drum in operative position; and means for driving said drum.
10. In a toy nixing machine, the combination with a supporting platform having a frame work mounted thereon; of a mixing drum provided with circumferentially extending gears; means on said drum providing tread portions extending outwardly beyond said gears; circumferentially spaced roller means mounted on said platform upon which the said circumferential tread portions bear; bracket members mounted upon said frame work and provided with means circuinferentially spaced with respect to said drum, said spaced means being provided with rollers bearing on said tread portions to maintain said drum in operative position, said brackets being detachably connected to said frame work and removable to free said drum to permit removal from operative posi tion.
11. In a toy mixing machine of the character described, the combination with a platform. and a supporting frame work; of a mixing drum including a cylindrical section; of ring gears disposed about the exterior of said drum, said gears being formed of stamped sheet metal; means mounted on said drum at each side of said ring gears to brace the same, said means being in theform of flanges projecting outwardly beyond said gears to provide circumferential tread portrons; circumferentially spaced pairs of rollers mounted on said platform upon which the tread portions of said drum are movably disposed; brackets mounted upon said frame work and provided with circumferentially spaced portions, each of which is provided with laterally spaced flanges disposed upon opposite sides of said tread portions; and a roller mounted between each pair of laterally spaced flanges and engaging the circumferential periphery of said tread means to maintain said drum in operative position.
12. In a toy mixing machine of the character described, the combination with a plat form and a supporting frame work; of a mixing drum including a cylindrical section; of ring gears disposed about the exterior of said drum, said gears being formed of stamped sheet metal; means mounted on said drum at each side of said ring gears to brace the same, said means being in the form of flanges projecting outwardly beyond said gears to provide circumferential tread portions; circun'iferentially spaced pairs of rollers mounted on said platform upon which the tread portions of said drum are movably disposed; brackets mounted upon said frame work and provided with circumferentially spaced portions, each of which is provided with laterally spaced flanges disposed upon opposite sides of said tread portions, said brackets being removably secured to said frame work, and serving to free said drum to permit removal thereof from the machine when said brackets are detached from said frame work.
