ROCK DRILL.

The present invention relates to means for controlling the feeding operations of rock drilling machines. The primary object is to provide apparatus of this kind by means of which the drilling mechanism will be fed antomatically to its work, the feeding means being under elliective control, and provision being made for returning or witlldrawing the drill from the drill-hole.

In the embodiment disclosed, a shell 10 is employed, having the usual cone 11 by which it may be mounted on a suitable support. This shell is provided at its front end with a cross head 12, to which is secured. a central loi'lgitudinally disposed cylinder 13 and a pair of side cylinders 1 1, the latter being preferably higher than the central cylinder 13, as will be clear by reference to Figures 1 and 5. Connecting the rear ends of the outer cylinders 1 1 is a manifold 15 that constitutes a closure for the rear end of the central cylinder, but is provided with a passageway 16 communicating with both the side cylinders 14:, and leading to a common nipple 17.
A portion of a hose line or other suitable conduit for supplying gaseous fluid under pressure is shown at 18, and is coupled to the nipple 17. In said line is located a valve comprising a casing 19 having oppositely disposed supply ports 20 therein and a lateral exhaust port 21. The valve body is shown at 22 and is rotatable. This valve body is provided with a transverse passageway 23 and a lateral exhaust port 24 that is adapted to move into and out of register with the exhaust port 21. The valve body is provided with a suitable handle 25. The front end of the cylinder 13 in communication through the head 12 with a pipe 26 that extends to the bottom of a liquid reservoir 27, and in this pipe is located a rotary shutcfi valve 28. A branch conduit 29 leads from the hose line 18 in advance of the valve 22 and is in communication with the top of the reservoir 27.
Slidably mounted on the outer cylinders 1 1 are tubular guides 30, the front ends of which sru iport a cross head 31, and a piston rod 32 connected to the center of this cross head, extends through the front end of the cylinder 13 andcarries a piston head 33 operating .in said cylinder 13.
The cross head also has piston rods 34 connected to its end portions, and. these rods are coupled to piston heads 35 that operate in the side cylinders 14..
Connecting the guides 30 is a drill. mount 36 that extends over the central cylinder 13 and bridges the space between the two cylinders 14. This mount has a front rest 37 for a drilling machine indicated in dotted lines at 38 in Figure 1, said. machine having a suitable handle 39 that is adapted to be suitably engaged and held in an abutment 40 forming a part of the mount.
lVith this structure, it will be evident that when air or other gaseous fluid under pressure is admitted to the hose line 18, it Will pass through the branch 29 into the reservoir 27 and thus place the liquid in said reservoir under pressure. This liquid will flow through the pipe 26 into the front end of the cylinder 13 when the valve 28 is opened and thus act against the front face of the piston head 33 that operates in said cylinder 13. When the main valve 22 is open or in the position shown in Figure 9, the gaseous fluid under pressure will pass into the manifold and thence into the rear end of the side cylinders 14, acting against the piston heads 35. The active areas of the two piston heads 35 will obviously be greater than the front face of the central. piston 83, and consequently the pistons with the cross head 31 and guides 30 will move forwardly, thereby carrying the mount 36 and a drill supported thereon forwardly. The forward feed, however, is readily controlled by the valve 28, which can be opened more or less to govern the speed or can be closed entirely,
thereby stopping thefeed. The use of liquid is advantageous as it being substantially non-expansible, the control of the feeding action canbe more accurately governed and when the valve 28 is closed no expansion or contraction of. the liquid in the cylinder 13 so that the position of the parts is fixed irrespective of the change of pressure in the cylinders 30. If the valve 22 is closed or turned to the position illustrated in Figure 10 then the air behind the piston heads 35 will exhaust, Whereas the pressure in the reservoir will continue and consequently the piston 33 will move rearvvardly, carrying the assembled parts \vithit.
Fromthe foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advanout further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. The combination with a set of spaced cylinder members and a set of piston members therein, of means for mounting a drilling member on one set ofmen bers to move therewith, a cylinder member intermediate the spaced members and a piston member therein, one of said intermediate members being connected to move with one ofthe first sets of members, means for supplying gaseous fluid under pressure to the f irstset of cylinder members to advance the motor, a reservoir connected to the intermediate cylinder member for receiving liquid from the latter, and means for delivering gaseous fluid under pressure to the reservoir.
2. The combination with a support, of a cylinder fixed thereto, a piston in the cylinder, a second cylinder fixed to the first cylinder, a tubular guide on the second cylinder, a second piston fixed to the first piston and. located in the second cylinder, means for supplying fluid under pressure to and exhausting it from the cylinders to cause one piston to act a ainst the other, and means for mounting a (ii-ill on the tubular guide.
3. The combination with a support. of in termediate and outside cylinders located side by side on the support, relatively fixed pistons in the cylinders, a head connecting the pistons, tubular guides on the outside cylinders connected to the head, means for supplying fluid to and exhausting it from the cylinders, and means for mounting a drill. on the tubular guides.
4. The combination with a support, of intermediate and outside cylinders located side by side on the support, relatively iixcd pistons in the cylinders, a head connecting the pistons, tubular guides on the outside cylinders connected to the head, means for mounting a drill on the tubular guides, a liquid holding reservoir having connnunication with the front of the intermediate cylinder, and means for supplying gaseous fluid under pressure to the rear ends of the outside cylinder and to the reservoir.
