Description
H. MILLER June 18, 1929.
POLICEMAN S BILLY Original Filed April 13, 1914 Patented June 18, 19297.
UNITED STATES HENRY MILLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
POLICEMAN S BILLY.
Beled for abandoned application Serial No. 831,370, filed April 13, 1914. This application filed April This invention relates to improvements in the type of club used by policemen and commonly known as a billy. It consists of the features and elements described and shown in the drawings as indicated by the claims.
ln the drawings Figure l is a side elevation of a club embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on a larger scale, section being taken at the plane of the axis.
As distinguished from the ordinary policemans club, which is usually constructed of Wood and is sometimes loaded7 with metal to increase the force of its blow, the present invention contemplates making the body portion, A, of the club flexible and somewhat elastic, whereby it is adapted to deliver a blow which will stun without serious disfigurement. Preferably, both the body, A, and the handle portion, B, are molded o1" a continuous rubber composition provided. with a reinforcing layer of canvas or sin'n'lar fabric, C. The body portion, A, is tubular in form having an air space, D, extending substantially throughout its entire length. The handle portion, B, is shown reinforced by an axially disposed stiiening member which may be a metal tube, E, flanged at both ends and permanently molded in the rubber handle, B. If the space, e, within the tube, E, communicates with the air space, D, in the body portion of the club, the resiliency of the latter will be somewhat increased.
Preferably, the body portion, A, is provided with a restraining element in the form of a coil of spring wire, F, having its first turn, F1, wrapped around the tube, E, just back of its flange, El. The remainder of the coil will be wrapped around the mandrel on which the club is molded, thus being embedded in the rubber of the body portion, A, flush with its interior surface; andl it will serve to prevent an undue degree of fiexibility which might render the club unwieldy in use.
The continuous air space formed Within the club at D and e, is closed at both ends by plugs, G, and H, respectively. The plug, G, is screwed into the end of the tube, E, and the rubber at the end of the handle, B, is
. gripped between the head, G1. of the plug and the flange, E2, of the tube. The body Serial No. 270,474.
portion, A, has molded in its end a threaded sleeve, J, flanged at Jl, for anchorage in the last coil, F2, of the restraining element, F, and the plug, H, is screwed into this sleeve, J,'back of the end, A1, of the rubber body, A, so as to be cushioned by the rubber at A1.
I claim l. A club comprising a handle and body portion, the body portion being composed of soft rubber and having a completely en closed air cavity extending approximately throughout its entire length and having a flexible metal reinforcement embedded in the rubber surrounding such air cavity.
A club comprising a handle portion and body portion molded integrally of soft rubber, and having an axial cavity closed at both ends for enclosing an air cushion, the handle having a tubular rigid metal reinforcement, the cavity of such tubular reinforcement being continuous with the axial ycavity of the body portion, and the body portion having` a fiexible metal reinforcement embedded in the rubber and surrounding the cavity.
3. A club comprising a handle portion and a body portion, the body portion heilig composed of soft rubber, a tubular stiil'ening element extending only through thehandle portion, the body portion being hollow and communicating with the interior of said stiffening tube, means closing said tube at one end of the club, and means closing the body portion at the other end.
Il. A club comprising a handle portion and a body portion composed of a continuous composition of soft rubber molded in hollow form to provide an axial cavity therein, a sti'lr'ening element extending through the handle portion, and a restraining coil of spring wire molded in the body portion around the air cavity and connected at one end to said stilliening element.
A club comprising a handle portion and a body portion, the body portion being composed of soft rubber molded in tubular form, a restraining coil of spring wire molded in said body portion substantially fiush with its inner Wall, and means for sealing the air space within said tubular body portion. I
G. A club composed of soft pliable material such as rubber, having an axially disposed rigid rcinforcing member in the handle portion of the club, and a flexible reinforcing Wire coil extending through the body portion beyond the handle, said coil being secured to the handle reinforcement, and a tubular fabric reinforcement molded in the rubber extending from end to end of the club outside the other reinforcements.
7. A club comprising a handle portion and a body portion, the body portion being composed oi' soft rubber molded to form an aXial l0 cavity therein, a restraining coil of spring Wire molded in said body portion surrounding the cavity, a threaded sleeve embedded in the upper end of the body portion and anchored to the restraining coil, and a plug threaded in the sleeve for closing the upper end of the cavity.
Y In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at` Chicago, Illinois, this 13th day of April, 1928.
HENRY MILLER.
