Description

June 1 l, 1929. H. T. GOULD 1.71 7,152
PENCIL SHAQREENER Filed July 11. 1927 INVIENTOR Henry T Gould ATTORNEY Patented June 11, 1929.
PATENT OFF-ICE.
HENRY T. GOULD,O F SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
PENCIL SHARPENER.
Application filed July 11,
invention relates to pencil sharpeners objects of the invention are ble wrapper with a flap that is adapted to I serve as a shield for the blade.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds. the invention consists of the novel construetion, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. These objects are accomplished by devi cos illustrated in the accompanying drawings; wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a pencil sharpener embodying the features of the in vention; Fig. 2 is a view in central longitudinal vertical section of the. same;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the flexible wrapper in the unfolded position; and
Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the blade holder with a blade installed therein.
Referring to the drawings throughout which like reference numerals designate like parts, the numeral 5 indicates ablade that is preferably made of steel in rectangular shape and sharpened on its outer edge. The numeral. 6 de "gnates the blade holder as a whole that is preferably made of aluminum, tin, or other thin sheet metal. Referring particularly to Fig. 4: prises a flat horizontal portion 7 that is slanted upwardly at 8 and downwardly at 9 to form an angular ridge 10. It is then bent backwardly upon itself at 11 to forma pocket 12 wherein the blade 5 is installed with its sharpened edge portion proj in a slantwise direction.
The numeral 13 designates a'wrapper or folder that may be made of paper composition, leather, or other flexible material. Said wrapper comprises an end portion 1%, mid
ortions 15 and 16 and a flap portion '17. Slits 18 and 19 are cut through the mid portion 15. I I
To install the blade holder 6 and blade 5 within the wrapper 13 said holder is turned over from the position shownin Fig. 4 with said blade projecting downwardly which is then passed through the slit 18 with the holder simple ends in abutment on and wrapper sections to said blade holder com-,
ccting upwardly,

portion 8 bearing against the wrapper por tion 15.
The wrapper portion 14 is then folded at 20 over against the blade holder (land portion 15 which is bent to conform somewhat to the ridge 10 of said blade holder. The two portions 14 an d 15 with the blade holder between are then folded over at 21 against the portion 16. i
The device will now be in its normally operative position with the tionof the blade o projecting upwardly and slanting forward as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawin In order to more securely in this position a' metal 22 is bent around its middle portion with its the underside. Crimp holes 23 may be punched through said band hold same in place.
In practical usethe device is placed on a sharpened edge por- 'hold the device band flat surface and the pencil maybe readily sharpened by drawing sharpened edge of the understood. When not in use the flap 17 may be folded at 2st over the blade 5 and its end 25 passed through the .slit 19 as shown in blade as will be its point across ther'eadily Fig. 2. Said flap will thus serve as a shield for the blade and the device may be safely carried'in the pocket.
Having thus described my invention, it
being understood that minor changes may be resorted to inits construction with'out'departing from its scope and spirit, whatl claim Letters Patent of the.
and desireto secure by United States 1s:
A pencil sharpener comprising a blade holder, said blade holder h aving a raised por- I ti'on with slanting sides, a portion of said holder bent back to form a blade pocket on one of said slanting sides, a blade installed in said pocket, a flexible. wrapper member having two slits therein, said blade projecting exteriorly of. said one of'said slits in a slantwise direction, and a flap forsaid wrapper arranged to be inserted in the other slit to serve as a shield for the-blade. I
In witness whereof Ihereunto subscribe my name this 15th day of June, A. D. 1927.
"HENRY r. GOULD.
