.INTEHCHANGEABLE AND ADJUSTABLE MATTRESS UNITS Filed March 24, 1927 ATTORNEY Patented June 4, 1929.
N1 STFETF.
ANTHONY VITEZ-KEBESZTFALVY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
Application filed March 24, 1927. Serial No. 177,988.
This invention relates to mattresses for beds, and has among its objects the provision of a mattress of improved and simplified construction to be applicable to any bed as may be desired, for which purpose said mattress includes a plurality of cooperative associated units which provide a mattress adjustable in size and permits of adjustment as to tension to take up the effects of wear and the natural slackening of the parts, and also to permit interchangeability of such parts.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a detail.
Figs. 3 and a are enlarged fragmentary detail views of modifications of the attachment means.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a detail of the fastening means shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view showing the application of two hooks for securing the notched strips of the straps to the bed frame.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 10 is a usual bed frame made of angle irons 11 connected rigidly by flat cross bars 12.
Mounted on said frame as shown in Figure 1, is one form of the mattress units constructed in accordance with my invention, and this form includes a plurality of straps 13 running lengthwise, and crosswise of the frame and arranged in interlaced formation.
The straps are provided with anchoring means for securing them in a detachable manner to the frame, and the anchoring means as shown in Figures 1 and 2 include metallic strips lt riveted to the ends of the straps as at 15. The metallic strips are formed with a plurality of holes 16 within which hook members 17 are engageable and the hook members may be disposed in any desired hole it depending upon the tension at which the straps are to be retained. Each hook member is of angle formation and includes a pair of hooks 18 and 19. The hooks 18 are engageable in the holes 16 while the hooks 19 are engageable with the vertical flanges 11' of the angle iron of the bed frame. The hooks 17 that are attached to the flat irons 12 of the bed frame may be of the simple construction as shown in Figures 1 and 4. By this arrangement, the tension of each of the straps may be adjusted to suit the comfort of the user, and therefore interchangeability of a high degree is provided for.
Fig. 3 illustrates a modification wherein a strip 14: has a plurality of lateral notches 20 having rounded inner ends and arranged in cooperating converging disposed pairs adapted to receive two hooks 17, one for each notch of a pair, thus balancing the strap very evenly and permitting the use of hooks of light material.
Fig. 1 shows a further modification, including a wire keeper 21, received in a fold 22 of a strap 13?, said fold being secured by lines of stitches 23. The wire keeper 21 may be replaced by a chain or other suitable device. Hooks of the types 17 or 17 may be used in connection with wire keepers 21 for securing the same to the frame. 1
It is obvious that many alterations may be made in the actual construction of my invention within the spirit of the same, and one of these might be obtained by reversing the manner of securing the straps to the bed frame. As indicated in Fig. 1, at -24, holes may be provided in the bed frame in judicious succession and a hook of the type indicated by the reference numeral 17 attached to the straps, for adjustability in this case said hook would be received in the holes 24: in the manner required by the tension to be obtained. A nearer hole would mean less tension in the strap, a further hole would stretch the strap to an increased degree.
From the above description and disclosure in the drawings, it will be obvious that I have provided a mattress including separable units that can be interchanged, replaced and assembled in an easy and expeditious manner, with very little efiort, and the novel means for securing the strap members to the frame provide for the desired adjustment thereof, with respect to the frame and each other.
What 1 claim as new, is 2- 1. In a mattress, a frame, a plurality of flexible members of fiat elongated formation interlaced and arranged transversely and longitudinally of the frame, metallic strips riveted to the ends of the flexible members, and being provided With lateral notches having rounded inner ends and arranged in cooperating pairs With the notches of each pair disposed in converging relation With respect to each other and extending inwardly from opposite sides of the strips and hook members having hooks arranged on the ends thereof to be received in one of the pairs of Said notches and by the frame respectively.
2. 111 a mattress, a frame, a plurality of flexible members of flat elongated formation interlaced and arranged transversely and longitudinally of the frame, metallic strips riveted to the ends of the flexible members, an anchoring means adapted to be detachably and adjustably secured in notches formed in the respective sides of the strips and including a pair of hooks on the ends thereof to be received in the notches and the frame respectively for connecting the flexible members to the latter.
Signed at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, this 19th day of March, A. D. 1927.
ANTHONY VlTEZ-KERESZTFALVY.
