PATENT OFFICE.
FRED A. HIRTZLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CONTAINER.
Application filed August 16, 1926.
This invention relates to novel improvements in containers and more especially to a container within which matter may be de posited such as candy, coin, or the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an article of this character which will be simple in construction and one which will have the simulation of a well known object thereby providing a container which will be attractive as well as compact in structure.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figs. 1 and 2 are side elevational views of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the invention.
In the drawing the container 10, embodying the invention simulates a base ball. The container 10 may in one instance be molded in a suitable mold from paper pulp or other analogous material and have printed thereon seam lines to complete the simulation of the base ball. In the present instance the container as illustrated in the drawing is formed from cardboard sections 11 and 12 which are of a pattern design similar to the pattern design of the covering material from which a base ball is formed. when these cardboard sections are arranged in proper relation with respect to each other their meeting edges are glued or stitched together as at 13.
To afford access to the interior of the container a flap 14 is defined by section 11 and this section 11 defines a score line 20 permitting turning of the flap 14 back upon the The flap 14 defines peripheral flanges 15 which frictionally en- Serial No. 129,526.
gage the edge 16 of the mouth 17 of the container thereby functioning to retain the flap 14 in closed position.
To complete the invention a lip 18 is cut from the-body of the flap 14 and this lip provides a finger piece to facilitate opening and closing the flap. By cutting the lip 18 from the body of the flap 14 it is apparent from Fig. 4 of the drawing that a pocket 19 will be provided for the accommodation of the lip 18 thereby disposing the outer surface of the lip 18 in flush alignment with the outer surface of the flap 14 when the lip is disposed in the pocket 19.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A substantially spherical container having the surface thereof arranged to simulate a base ball, and including a portion arranged along the seam line representations adapted to be bent outwardly so as to provide access to the interior of said spherical member, said portion having a downwardly depending flange provided therearound adapted to engage the edges of said container adjacent the opening provided therein whereby to retain said portion in position, said portion having a tab portion provided thereon adapted to be bent outwardly to provide means whereby said portion may be moved, said portion having a pocket provided therein adapted to normally receive said tab portion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRED A. HIRTZLER.
