Description

Patented May 14, 1929.
UNITED STATES CLARENCE E. PILE, OF PARSONS, KANSAS.
l WRENCH.
Application led November 7, 1927.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches and has for an object the provision of means for permitting rapid adjustment of the movable jaw of a wrench, and for holding the said jaw against movement by pressure upon the handles or grips of the wrench.
Another obj ectof the invention is the provision of means of the above character which may be applied to pipe wrenches and other tools, as well as to monkey wrenches.
Vith the above and other objects in View, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings ,and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings E Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the movable aw partly broken away and'shown in section and the parts shown in engaged position.
Figure 3 is a view partly in section and partly in plan.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Figure 1. Y
Figure 5 is a similar view on the line 5 5 of Figure 2. n
Referring tothe drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention as shown comprises a pair of relatively movable members which include shanks 10. These shanks are formed of flat metal and are pivotally connected at one end by means of a pivot 11, the latter also being utilized to secure the stationary jaw 12 which is recessed as at 13 to receive the ends of the slianks. Extending from the other' ends of the shanks are handles 14, while slidingly mounted upon these shanks is a relatively movable jaw l5. This jaw is provided with an opening 16 for the passage of the shanks 10 andthis opening is slightly greater in area than the combined cross sectional areas of the shanks.

ment relative to the ]aw l2. As soon as the jaws have been satisfactorily adjusted to a nut or other object, the handles 14 will be gripped so that they will be moved relativelyy inward, whereupon, the Shanks will be moved to the position shown in Figures 2 and 5 so as to frictionally engage the opposite walls of the opening 16 and hold the jaw l5 in position.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor ldetails of construction and the right is here- 1n reserved to make'such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having describedy the invention what is claimed is l. A tool comprising a pair of pivotally connected members, handles at one end ot the members, a stationary jaw, and a aw having an opening therethrough to slidingly receive the pivotally connected members to permit relative adjustment of the jaws and to hold the movable jaw in position when the handles are pressed relatively inward through engagement of said members with the walls of the opening of said jaw.
2. A tool comprising a pair of pivotally connected members, a handle at one end of each of the members, a stationary jaw, a relatively movable jaw mounted-upon said members and held against movement by the members when the handles are pressed relatively inward. Y
3.,A tool comprising a Vpair of members pivotally connected atl one end, a stationary jaw secured to the pivoted ends of the members, anda relatively movable jaw slidable upon said members and engaged by and held against sliding movement when said members are pressed relatively inward. V Y
In testimony whereof I a'HX my signature.
