Our invent-ion relates to a new and useful filter sand washing machine adapted for use on large filter' beds in water works and similar establishments whereby the sludge, scum, vegetation, bacteria and other foreign matter habitually forming, depositing and accumulating on the sand of filter beds may be removed without theJ necessity of removing the filter sand from its bed or in any way interfering with or interrupting the function or use of the filter bed as a whole.
Our invention further relates to a filter sand washing machine of this gener-al character which is mounted on a self-propelled floating vessel such as a boat, barge or the.
like, which is adapted to travel or float in the water over the bed of sand to be washed and cleaned, thus eliminating the necessity of completely' or partially draining the water from the filter bed which has heretofore generally been necessary when it was desired p to wash the filter sand.
Our invention further relates to a sand washing machine, whichV while operated by the same source of power which propels the supporting vessel, may nevertheless be operated'at various speeds or stopped completely irrespective of the propulsion of said supfporting vessel.
Qur invention further relates to a novel construction of the washing nozzles on the head of our novel'sand washing machine, whereby the sand is thoroughly agitated and washed, in less time and at less expense and effort. p
Our invention further relates to various other advantages sought to be attained by our novel constructionL all of which will hereinafter be described. y
To the above ends our .invention consists of a boat or similar self-propelled floating vessel, means for propelling the latter, a head adjustably carried by said boat, washing nozzles at the lower end of said head for piercing andagitating the sand and injecting water thereinto, means for supplying water to said nozzlesjand means for sucking and withdrawing the water accumulating in said head. j
Our invention further vconsists in a novel construction of` a ffilter sand ,washing machine which may bev operated at any desired speed regardless 'of thefspeed or propulsion ofthe supporting boat or vessel and which may be adjusted to suit the thickness and grade of sand used in differentiilter beds.
Our invention further consists of various other novel features of construction and advantage hereinafter described and claimed.
For the purpose of illustrating our invention we have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by us, since the same has been found in practice to givesatisfactory and reliable results, although it is to. be understood that the various instrumentalities of which your invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that our invention is not limited to theY precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawings, k in which like reference characters indicate vlike parts, 1 designates a boat, barge, or any other selfpropelled floating vehicle, on which my novel filter sand vwashing machine may be mounted, the boat being driven or propelled by van engine or motor 2 of any suitable, conven- -ings 7 carriedby the frame 8, which in turnV is carried by or integral with'the casing of the engine 2. The shafts 6 carry at their free ends the pulleys 9, over which pass the sprocket chains passing over the pulleys 11 fast on the propeller shafts 12, which carry at their outer ends the propeller-s 13 Which are fast on the arms 14 which are pivoted to the head 15 as at 16, said head being fast on the shaft 12. The arms 14 are pivoted at the rear ends 17 to the bifurcations 18 of the sliding sleeve 19, which is adapted to telescope or slide over the shaft 12 and which is connected vat its rear end to the clutch mechanism 2O which is operated by the lever 21 to vary the angular position of 'the propeller blades 13. Thus, if it is necessary to stop the boat 1 entirely, the

It is obvious that other forms of propelling mechanism can be employed if desiredf The main drive shaft 3, operating the propeller shafts 12, extends through the frame 8 and operates the suction pump 22 of any suitable construction, said pump being provided with the discharge hose 23 leading to a point of disposal on the main land. The suction pump 22 is also provided with the suction hose 24 leadingfrom the chamber 25 in the head 26, which will be hereinafter described. Simultaneously ,with the operation of the suction pump 22, the main drive shaft 3 also` operates the force pump 27, which is provided With the suction inlet 28 communicating with the Water in which the vessel 1 is floating and the discharge 29 leading to the discharge nozzles and their adjuncts in the chamber 25. The ,head 26 is of a generally inverted cup shape and'is composed of the vertical parallel walls 30 having the upturned bottom peripheral {iange 31, lWhich serves to smoothen out the sand in front of and behind thehead 26, and has the top wall 32 to which are secured the uprights 33, joined at their upper ends by the transverse beam 34. The uprights 33 carry the lower sheaves 35 around which pass the chains or connections 36, the ends of which are secured to the boat as at 37 and the other ends of which are Wound around the drums38, provided with the handles 39, and adapted to raise and lower the head 26 and its adjuncts to suit Varyiner de ths of the Water and sand being Washe hrough the transverse beam 34X which is mounted on the uprights 33X secured to the top Wall 32 of the head 26 extends the threaded adjusting rod 41, which is provided at its upper end with the manually operated hand Wheel 42. The lower end of the rod 41 passes through the top Wall 32 of the head 26 and is secured to the transverse bar 43 to the ends of which are secured the brackets '44, to the rear ends of which latter is secured the transverse tubular member 45 which carriesI the series of nozzles 46 and the central nozzle 49 and which is provided with the upper -port 47 and the bottom, elongated port 43. The central nozzle 49 is provided with the nipple or integral upper extension 50, which is connected by the hose 53 to the Yconnectimi 51 of the discharge pipe 29 of the force pump 27. rl`he transverse, tubular member 45 is closed at its ends and is pivoted in thc brackets 52 which are secured to the rear Wall of the head 26. By manipulating the hand Wheel 42 to raise or lower the transverse bar 43, the angular disposition or inclination of the series or row of nozzles 46, including the central nozzle 49, is regulated With respect to the sand bed 55.

The travel of the nozzles 46 and the nozzles 49 through the sand bed, as Well as the force of the Water forced therethrough by the pump 27, agitates the sand and washes it, by separating therefrom the scum, vegetation, bacteria and other impurities which are now floating within the chamber 25 of the head 26, said chamber being isolated from the rest of the Water in the filter bed,v as Will be apparent. The water employed in washing the sand under, or enclosed within the head 26 at any given time is drawn by the force pump 27 through the suction inlet 28 in the direction of the` arrow, from the water in the filter bed. The upturned fiange 31 on the bottom of the head 26 serves to smoothen out the sand before the approach of the nozzles 46 and after their passage over the sand being washed, thus facilitating the travel of the nozzles and their adjuncts and insuring thorough uniformity of depth and consequently of the effectiveness of the apparatus. f
ly making the bodies of the nozzles 46 and 49 of a generally curved or concaved'contour, the water pumped therethrough into the sand bed is given impetus in an upward direction, and instead of tending to force its way down through the sand bed into the reservoir of pure filtered water, it will, after separating the impurities from the sand, travel in a generally 'upward direction towards the surface of the sand carrying all impurities with it, and finally accumulates together with the impurities from the sand in the chamber 25 of the head 26 to be withdrawn through the suction inlet 58, the'pipe 24 and their adjuncts to a suitable point of disposal outside of the filter bed. By adjusting the height of the head 26 by means of the drum 38 and its adjuncts, and by regulating the angular position ofthe nozzles 36, our novel apparatus is rendered univer'- sally applicable and efficient.
By our novel construction we further provide for the accurate timing of the speed of the boat 1 and' the operation of the washing head 26, to the end that the boat is propelled at arate which will permit of the thorough washing of the sand covered by the chamber 25 in the time required for traveling over such area, thus resulting in a continuous, uninterrupted process.
It will be seen from Figures 4 and 6 that the uprights 33 are provided with the guide rollers 59 which bear against the walls 60 to reduce friction and facilitate the raising and loweringv of the head 26 and its adjuncts, as will be apparent. The connection 51 of the discharge hose 29 passes through the sleeve 62 in the top wall 32y of the head 26 while the intake 58 of the suction hose 24 passes through an extension 63 of said sleeve 62. Similarly the lower portion of the stem 41 passes through the sleeve 64 in the top 32 of the head 2`6.whil e its upper threaded portion extends through the internally threaded sleeve 65 in the upper transverse beam 34, as will be understood from Figure 4. i
IVe are aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the lspirit or essential attributes thereof, and We therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in alla' respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :e-
1. In a device of the character stated, an inverted cup shaped head, an apertured tube rotatably mounted therein, arms projecting from the ends of said tube, a transverse rod joining the outer ends of said arms, a vertically adjustable stem having its lower end secured to said rod, a series of nozzles secured to said apertured tube, a discharge pipel for leading water into said tube and nozzles and a suction pipe extending into the upper portion of said head for Withdrawing Water and-impurities from said head.
2. In a device of the character stated, a vertically adjustable inverted cup shaped head, an oppositely apertured tube rotatably mounted therein, arms projecting from the ends of said tubes, a transverse rod joining the outer ends of said arms, a verticallyvadjustable stem having its lower en'd secured to. said rod, a series of curved nozzles secured to said apertured tube, a discharge pipe for leading water into said tube and nozzles and a suction pipe communicating with the upper portion of said'head for withdrawing the water and impurities from said head.
3. In a device of the character stated, an
inverted cup shaped head, an apertured tube rotatably mounted therein, arms projecting from the ends of said tube, a transverse rod joining the outer ends of said armsha vertically adjustable stem having its lower end secured to said rod, a series of nozzles secured to said apertured tube, a discharge pipe lfor leading water into said tube and nozzles and a suction pipe extending into the upper portion of said head for withdrawing water and impurities from said head, in combination with means for raising and lowering said head.
4. vertically adjustable, inverted cup shaped head, a transversev tube adjustably mounted in said head and having a lower elongated vertically adjustable inverted cup shaped head having a bottom outer peripheral upturned fiange, a transverse tube adjustably mounted in said head and having a lower elongated slot therein, means for discharging Water into said tube, a series of curved discharge nozzles fast on said tube and in alignment with said lower slot, means for withdrawing water from said head, arms rigidly connected to and extending from the ends of said tube, a transverse rod rigidly connecting the ends of said arms, and a vertically adjustable stem having its lower end connected to said rod, for rotatably adjusting said tube and its adjuncts.
7 In a filter sand Washing machine of the character stated, a floating support, a head adjustably carried by said support and adapted to extend beyond the bottom of said support, there being a chamber formed in said head, a transverse tube rotatably mounted in said head and having a bottom elongated slot therein, a force pump for injecting water into said tube, a series of nozzles fast on said tube and in alignment with said slot, a suction pump for withdrawing water from said chamber, actuating means common to said support and pumps and means for permitting the operation of said pumps simultaneously with, and independently of, said support.
8. In a filter sand Washing machine of the character stated, a floating support, a-'pump shaft thereon, a plurality of pumps actuated by said shaft, a vertically adjustable head carried by said support, a plurality of noz zles movably mounted in said head and adapted to project below the latter into the sand of the filter, a suction pipe for one of said pumps leading from the water to bel filtered, a discharge pipe from the same pump leading to said nozzles, and a suction pipe leading from the upper portion of said head to the suction of said other pump, in combination with means for adjusting said nozzles, and means for raising and lowering said head and nozzles simultaneously and independently.
9. In a filter sand washing machine of the character stated, a floating support, a pump shaft thereon, a plurality of pumps actuated by said shaft, a vertically adjustable head carried by said support, a plurality of curved nozzles movably mounted in said head and adapted to project below the latter into the sand of the filter, a suction pipe for one of said pumps leading from the water to be filtered, a discharge pipe from the same pump leading to said nozzles, and a suction pipe leading from the upper portion of said head to the suction of said other pump, in combination with means for adjusting said nozzles, and means for raising and lowering said head and nozzles simultaneously and independently. 10. In a filter sand washing machine, a float-ing support, vertically disposed guides thereon, an inverted cup-shaped head open at its bottom and closed at its top, positioned between said guides, uprights on said head, rollers on the upper portions of said upright-s contacting with saidguides, hoisting mechanism for raising and lowering said head, a cross bar carried by said head intermediate of its ends, an adjustable threaded rod passing through said cross bar and the top of said head, a series of adjustable nozzles movably mounted within said head, and connections from the lower end of said adjusting rod to said nozzles for actuating the latter. f

Heating support, vertically disposed guides thereon, an inverted `cup-shaped head open at its bottom and closed at its top and carried by said support, rollers on the upper portion of said head bearing on said guides, a hoisting mechanism for raising and lowering said head, a transverse tube rotatably mounted in the lower portion of said head, a series of nozzles secured to said tube and adapted to extend into the sand below the bottom of said head, an adjusting rod extending upwardly through the top of said head, connections from the lower end of said rod to the ends of said tube for rotating the latter, means for injecting clean water into said tube and through said nozzles,and means for withdrawing the usedl water and impurities accumulating in said head.
12. In a device of the character stated, a floating support, vertical guides thereon, an inverted cup-shaped head carried by said support, rollers Vintermediate said head and guides, means for raising and lowering said head, a. series of nozzles rotatably mounted in and adapted to extend below the bottom of said head, means for forcing water through said nozzles, and means for withdrawing water and impurities from said head.
13. In a device of the character stated, a floating support, vertical guides therein, an inverted cup-shaped head carried by said support, rollers intermediate said head and said guides, means for raising and lowering said head, a transverse tube rotatably mounted in the bottom of said head, a series of curvednozzles mounted on said tube and adapted to extend below the bottom ot said head, piunping means for forcing water into said ktube and nozzles, a suction pump for withdrawing the water and impurities accumulating in said head, and actuating means common to said pumping means 10 and said support, adapted to actuate said pumps simultaneously with or independently of said support. y
