COMPRESSOR CONSTRUCTION FOR REFRIGEBATIN G DEVICES.
. Application filed. October 25, 1927. Serial No. 228,512.
My invention relates to refrigerating devices, and particularly to a detail of construction of the machine illustrated in 'my copending application, Serial No. 228,510
a filed of even date herewith.
An object of the invention here disclosed isv to provide for simple and economical mounting and assembly of the compressors. In the device of my "invention, I have found to it desirable to mount the compressor motor directly above the pressure chamber and to drive the compressors without speed reducing means between them and the motor. This results in relatively very high speed of the' compressors with consequent necessity for accurate work in construction and assembly. In order to avoid much of the accurate fitting that would ordinarily be required, I have adopted means that insure 2o certainty of operation for an. indefinite period without likelihood of wear or disarrangement.
To this end, I provide a pair of compressors radially arranged relative to the drive shaft, the cylinders of the compressors being mounted for oscillation about a large bearing stud, suitable spring means being interposed to tween the adjacent walls which contain the so inlet and exhaust ports and incidentally to take up any possible wear.
The invention also contemplates another improvement intended to function only while the parts are being assembled. The oil pump as is employed for elevating the oil from the bottom of the high pressure chamber a higher point in the chamber, and to facilitate the engagement of the motor crank with the oil pump mechanism. I provide a spring to backed crank pin, so arranged that the parts may be assembled without regard to the position of the parts that will ultimately cooperate, with the assurance that n the first stages of operation, the crank pin Wlll asat same its proper posltion.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a vertical sectional view through a machine construct- 5o ed in accordance with my invention.
The main casing on the high side of the machine consists of upper, lower and intermediate castings, 10, 11 and 12. The intermediate casting or wall which serves to divide the chamber into two compartments serves also as a support for compressor cylinsure a tight bearing beinders, 13, 14, radially arranged and cooperating with pistons, 15, 16 operatively connected to a crank 17 on a driven shaft, 18. The cylinders are provided with the customary ports and with a sprin seated cylmderhead 19 which acts as a dlscharge valve.
The cylinders are provided withvertically extending laterally projecting hollow, stud shafts or hubs, 2Q, snugly fitting within the bosses 21 formed in the wall 12. A cup shaped member having the cylindrical portion 22 and an annular flange 23 is fitted within the recess within the shaft, the annular portion bearing on the top end of the hub, 21. A bolt 24. extends downwardly within the recesses and through the cup member and is threaded in the metal of the cylinder. A compression spring 25 bears against the bottom of the cup member and against the head of the bolt, 24, and thereby tends to pull the cylinder against the bottom face of the wall 12. The construction has the advantage that no one of the parts other than the bearing surfaces between the shaft and the hub have relative movement. The oscillation of the shaft serves merely to slightly twist the spring; therefore the washer does not turn.
At the end of the crank, 17 I provide a counter wei ht 26 which is held in place by means 0 a screw having a slotted head 27. A pin 28 extends through the head and upward within the body. of the screw and.
is backed by a compression sprin 29 which tends to thrust the in downward y. An oil pump 30 is locate on the bottom wall of the casing, 11, the driven element of the pump including a disc, 31 having an aperture, 32 therein near its periphery. Theposition of the disc and its aperture relative to the pin 28 is such that regardless of the manner of assembly of the parts, the pin will engage with the aperture" 32 during the first rotation of the crank. In other words, the parts may be assembled without care as to engagement of the pin with the oil pump,
with the assurance that as soon as the motor,
is started, engagement will take place. This is a useful and essential feature, inasmuch as the parts are entirely concealed ,and can not be seen during assembly.
Numerous modifications and changes may be made in the construction shown, and I do not wish to be limited except as indicated in the appended claims.
stud shaft having a recess to receive said washer, a spring bearing on said washer and a bolt mounted concentrically within the hollow shaft and engaging the opposite end of said spring.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a wall providing a relatively long bearing opening, a compressor cylinder having a long, relatively large, hollow stud shaft extending laterally relative to the length of the cylinders, a dished washer, the flanges of which rest on the wall and the dished portion of which projects into the hollow shaft, a bolt concentrically mounted in the hollow shaft, and a spring surrounding said bolt and engaging the dished washer at one end and the head of the bolt at the opposite end.
3. In a compressor construction, the combination of a horizontal wall having an opening, an oscillating cylinder having a hollow stud shaft projecting into said opening, a bolt and compression spring concentrically mounted in the hollow shaft, means for transmitting the thrust of the spring in one direction against said wall, the thrust in the opposite direction tending to hold said cylinder against said wall.
4. In a compressor construction, the combination of a high pressure chamber, a compressor/and an oil pump in said chamber, a drive shaft having a crank, said oil pump having an apertured disc concentric with said drive shaft, and a spring pressed plunger carried by said crank and adapted to register with the aperture in said disc.-
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
