This inventionrelates to an improvement in box making machines, and with respect to its more specific features to mechanism for assembling tubular box bodies and heads.
An object of the presentinvention is to provide a machine forinserting a plurality of heads in each of a succession of tubular bodies having stops for limiting the inward movement of'the heads, wherein the bodies are moved past magazines holding the heads, the heads being fed to the bodies, seated therein, and secured in place.
Another objectis to providein such a machine, means autoinaticalh; operated for seating the flat heads securely on the stops of the bodies, in substantially the same manner as they would be seated manually, and
to press each head firmly down upon the seat.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinatte'r set forth, and the scope or theapplication of which will be indicated in the following claims.

The present machine is designed to assemble box elements, composed of bodies and heads, wherein the body of the element has a stop near one end for limiting the in ward movement of the head. Usually this stop is formed by an inner ring,,the-body beingcomposed of two rings, fitting one within the other, the inner ring being spaced apart from one end of the body, to provide the stop, which is an annular shoulder. To secure a pleasing appearance'in the finished box, the box element forming the cover is provided with a domed head, and to reinforce and brace the box and to securely hold the contents of the box, a fiat head is arranged below the domed head, the fiat head fitting tightly within the box, while the domed head is relatively loose when first inserted. The heads are secured in place in any desired manner, in the present instance by crimping the end of the body down upon the head. Because of the relatively tight fit between the flat head and the body, the
' flat head is carefully fitted in place this fitting usually having been done manually. In the present embodiment of the invention a suitable supporting frame 1 is provided, and at the front of the frame anendless conveyor is arranged, for feeding the box elements or bodies to the operating mechanisms. The said conveyor comprises an endless belt 2 supported by rollers 3 and at, the former being journaled in brackets 5 on the frame, while the latter is journaled I v in the ends ofarms 6 extending laterally from the frame and supported by braces 7. The belt is moved continuously by means of a sprocket chain 8 (Fig. 19) connecting a sprocket wheel 9 on the shaft of the roller 8 with a sprocket wheel 10 on a shaft 11. The shaft 11 journaled in brackets 12 on the frame, is driven from a motor 13 sup ported by the frame, and connected by. a belt 14 with a shaft 15 journaled 011 one end of the frame. The belt 14 connects wheels 16 and 17 on the motor, and on the shaft 15 respectively, and" the shaft 15 is connected to the shaft 11 by the'chain 8 before mentioned, the shaft 11 having a sprocket wheel engaged by the chain 8.
A plurality of devices for supplying heads is provided. In the present embodiment,
each head supply device includes a magazine arranged alongside of the belt, one of the magazines being adapted to contain fiat heads and the other to contain domed heads, all the heads in each magazine being arranged in superposed relation. The bottoms of the magazines are formed by a table 19 supported above the frame, and the heads are heldin superposed relation by means of gauge bars 20, 21 and 22, the bar 22 being between the magazines. Each of the gauge bars is supported by an angle bracket 23, which is secured to a plate 24 supported above the table in spaced relation, so that the lower end of the gauge bar is above the table 19. Eachof the gauge bars 21 is. also supported by an angle bracket 25 secured to another plate 2 1-. The plates 24 extend longitudinally of the table at the front and'rear thereof, and the said plates carry all of the gauge bars. The angle bars 23 and 25 are adjustably connected with the plates 24-, by a screw and slot connection indicated at 27, as clearly shown in Figure 2, so that they may be adjusted toward and from the center of the magazine. The gauge bars 22 are supportedby a common angle bracket 28, which is mounted in the same manner as the angle bars23 and 25. Thus each magazine has three gauge bars, arranged atangular intervals of approximately120 degrees, and the heads are held between the gauge bars.
The table 19 is transversely grooved diametrically of each magazineas indicated at 29 and 30 respectively, and a feed slide is mounted in each groove, the slide in the groove 29 being indicated at 31, while that in the groove 30 is indicated at 32. By means of these slides, heads are simultaneously fed from the magazines toward the conve or, and the slides are operated by a cam 83 on theshaft 11. The slides are connected by a crosshead 84, and the crosshead is connected to one of the arms of a bell crank by a link 86. The other arm of the bell crank is connected by an adjustable link 37 with one end of a lever 38 having a friction roller intermediate its ends engaging the edge of the cam 33. The other end of the lever is pivoted to an arm 39 depending from the top of the frame. For every complete rotation of the cam, the feed slides will be operated to feed. a flat and a domed head to box bodies on the conveyor. 1
Retaining fingers are provided in each magazine, for preventing the passage of more than a single head, the said fingers be ing mounted on the gauge bars 20. As shown in Figures 9 and 10, each of the retaining fingers 4.0 is slidably connected with the gauge bar, by screw and slot connections 4]. Normally the retaining fingers occupy the position of Figure 10, with their lower ends contacting with the table 19. The
.inner corners of the fingers are beveledhowout past the retaining finger, and into posiever, so that when a head ismoved toward the conveyor by the slide, the retaining finger will be liftedby the head, to permit the passage thereof from the magazine. The forward under corner of the slide 31 is beveled, as shown in Figure 3, and the upper face of the slide is flush with the upper face of the table 19. A pushing finger 42 is secured to the inner end or" the slide, for engaging the bottom head, and when the slide is reciprocated, a head ispushed tion above abox body A supported by the conveyor.
In the illustrated embodiment, the inserting of the head in the box is controlled by the movement of the slide. 'The inserting mechanism includes a rock naled in arins' ld extending above the con veyor from the table 19,'and the shafthas a finger 45 intermediate the arms, and in position to engage the forward edge of a flat head fed by the slide, and guide the said forward edge into the box body. The shal't has an arm 46 at one end, in position to be engaged by the end of an operating bar 47, competed to the rear of the slide 31 by a bracket 48. When the slides move toward theconveyor, the end of the bar 47 engages the arm 46, rocks the shaft- 43 and causes the finger 4-5 to engage the forward sideof the head, and to press the forward edge of the head into the body, and downnpon the shoulder.
The mechanism for pushing the rear 01. the head into the box (see Fig. 5) includes a. plate or finger 49 shaped to fit within the body, and substantially semi-circular in form. This plate is carried by arms 50 e2;- tending upwardly and rearwardly from a shaft 51, journalod. in bearing arms 52 extendin from the table 19., above the convcyor. The plate is connected, to the arms by links 59, which are pivoted. to the plate and to the arms; A spring 53 (see Fig. 7)

Referring to Figure 9, it will be noticed that the domed heads rest at their rear edges on a plate 68, which extends inwardly in inclined position from the rear gauge bar 21. The plate extends transversely of the groove 30. At each end of the plate pins 69 extend upwardly from the table 19, the said pins engaging the edge of the-lowermost blank in the magazine to position it exactly. The heads are arranged with their convex surfaces upward, in nested relation, and to move the blanks in succes-' sion, the slide has a sharptoothed pawl 70 at its forward end. The slide 32 is of greater length than the slide 31 being of such length that when the slides are in retracted position, and the forward end of the slide 31 1s at the rear of the flat head magazine, the toothed end of the plate 70 will be near the forward side of the domed head magazine. lVhen the slides move forwardly, the toothed end of the plate 70 engages the concave face of the lowermost head, near the forward edge thereof, and pushes the head out beneath the retaining finger 40 and into position above a box body. Retraction of the head with the slide is prevented by a retaining member in the form of a yoke, the arms .71 of which extend. through openings in the adjacent plate 24. The body 72 of the yoke normally rests on the plate 2 1-, and it has a guide pin 73 passing through the overlying portion of an angle bracket 74 secured to the plate 2 The lower rear corners of the arms 71 are beveled, as shown in Figure 9, so that when a domed head moves forward the retaining member is lifted, and does not interfere with the forward movement of the head. The retaining member however, prevents rearward movement of the head and insures that it will fall into that box body which is at the magazine for domed heads.
It will be noted that the arrangement hereinbefore described results in the simulta'ncous insertion into two of the box bodies of heads from each magazine, the head from the dome supply magazine being inserted after the head from the other magazine, but the heads being laid in the box bodies practically at the same time. It will also be observed that inserting mechanism for the flat heads disposes the heads, or the front and rear sides thereof, in tilted relation to the plane of theedge of the opening into which they are to be inserted, one side of head first entering the opening, to be followed by the remainder of the head, the fingers 15 and 4-9 acting as it were in a sequential order so that one finger inserts part of the head before insertion of the complete head is effected by the inserting movement of the other finger. Thus, although the heads are of different shapes and come from different sources, their insertion in two box bodies is effected at the same time as in one, the facility for disposing the closely. fitted flat head being substantially equal to that of inserting the more loosely fitting dome head, on account of the special manner in which the fiat head is pressed into its body. It will also be noted that the feed slide 32 immediately in rear of the toothed pawl 70 is sufficiently wide to support the dome head above the box body into which it is to be inserted, this dome head being stripped from the slide upon retraction of the latter.
Upon the completion of the operation of placing a domed head in the box body, which is simultaneous with the completion of. a crimping operation, another box body is moved from the conveyor to the crimping mechanism, and the-box bodies on the conveyor are again advanced, to bring succeed ing box bodies in position to receive flat and domed heads. As the boxes provided with beads move onward, they eventually engage a stop 75 (Figs. 2, 11 and. 12) extending transversely above the conveyor, at the crimping mechanism. A pusher 76 is arranged to move transversely of .the conveyor,
near the stop 75, and 011 theopposite side of the conveyor from the magazines. This pusher, which is in the form of a slide, is movable in a guide 77 supported by the frame 1, and it is operated by a cam 78 on the shaft 11 before mentioned. A. slotted follower 7,9 embraces the shaft, and has a friction roller 80 engaging the edge of the cam. The friction roller is held in engagement with the cam by means of a spring 81 arranged between it and an extension 82 from the frame, and the follower is connected with one of the arms of a, bell crank 83 whose other arm is connected to the pusher by a link 84, the said link having a turn buckle interposed in its length as shown in Figure 11. A second spring 85'is arranged between the lower arm of the bell crank and the bracket 86 which supports the guide 77, and acts normally to move the slide outwardly, and the spring 81 assists this action.
The opposite sides of the upper run of the belt 2 move upon rails 87 and 88 which are supported from the frame 1, the rails extending from the roller 3 to the roller 4..
Guides 89 are secured to these rails, the i said guides being. spaced slightly from the edges of the belts, and the belt runs between the guides which are in the form of angle plates, having one portion secured to the adjacent rail, and another portion extending vertically therefrom. The stop is the continuation of a rail 90, which is one of a pair forming a guide for the box body from the conveyor to the crimping inechanism, the other rail being indicated at 91 in Figures 2 and 12. The rails and 91 are secured to a plate 104, which extends from near the belt 2 to the crimping-mechanism.
The crimping mechanism includes a bracket 92 having an overhanging arm, through which is threaded a rod 93 (see Fig. 13), carrying'at its lower end a block of metal 94, and having at-its upper end a wheel 95, by means of which tllBfIOCl may be turned to establish the position of the block. The block which is rectangular in cross-section moves against thcvertical face of the bracket, and the block is adapted to be heated, having openings as shown into which hea ing mechanism, as for instance gas jets or heating coils may be inserted.

The operation of the machine will be understood from the description of the operation of the several mechanisms. 1 The box bodies are fed to the belt 2, as for instance manuall As each bod 1 comes into )osition y at the flat head magazine, a flat head is in serted therein. Afterwards a domed head is placed on the flathead, and the end of the box is crimped down upon the domed head.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this inven ed. to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention. herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a machine of the class described, in
combination, means forinserting heads in tubular box bodies, comprising a support for the body, means for feeding a head to the body, means for positioning the advance end of the head in the body, and means for pushing the rear end of the head into the body, saidpositioning and pushing means being controlled by the movementof the, feeding means.

In a machine of the class described, in combination, a support for the body, a maga zine for heads, a feed slide for moving the heads in succession from the magazine, means controlled by the forward movement of the slide for guiding the edge of the head remote from the slide into the body, and means controlled by therearward movement of the slide for pushing the head in the end of the body. 6. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a support for the body, a magazine for heads, a feed slide for moving the heads in succession from the magazine,-
means controlled by the forward movement of the slide for guiding the edge of the head remote from the slide into the body, and means controlled by the rearward movement of the slide for pushing the head in the end of the body, said first named means com prising a tilting member engaging the forward edge of the head as the slide moves toward the body to guide the edge to place.

In a. machine of the class described, in combination, means for inserting 'headsin tubular box bodies, comprising a support for the body, means for feeding a head to the, body, means forpositioning the advance end of the head in the body, means for pushing the rear end of the head into the body, said positioning and pushing means being controlled by the movement ofthe feeding means, and means for holding the head substantially horizontal .until it is above the box body.

In a machine of the class described, in combination, means for inserting heads in tubular box bodies, comprising a support for the body, means for feeding a head to the body, means for positio-nin g thev advance end of the head in the body, means for pushing the rear end-of the head into the body, the

A machine of the character described including, in combination, means adapted to feed box bodies,;a plurality of devices for supplying heads, and means adapted to insupply devices after a head from another of said supply devices, said inserting means in-j eluding a recipro-cal head-supporting pusher having a tooth adapted to engage the under of the supported head to cause the head to advance withsaid pusher towardthe body to receive the same.

A machine of the character described including, in combination, means adapted to feed box bodies,-a plurality of devices for supplying heads, means adapted to insert into each body a head from one of said supply devices after a head from another of said supply devices, said inserting means including a finger and aplate adapted to move into and out of the bodies and to press opposite sides of the heads from one supply device into the bodies, means to cause the pressing operations of said finger and plate in sequence, and a reciprocal pusher having a tooth adapted to engage the under faces of heads fromanother of said supply devices and deliver the heads into bodies previously supplied withheads from the other supply device.

A machine of the character described including, in combination, a reciprocal head feeding slide, a 7 head pressing finger mounted to rock into and out of the end of a box body at one slde of said body, a plate movable into and out of a different portion of the same end of the box body, and means adapted to move said finger and plate to press first one sideand then the opposite side of said headinto the box body'and thereafter move said finger and plate out of the box body, said means including, an oscillatable arm operatively connected to saidplate, a spring operatively connected to move said arm in one direction and a power actuated, reciprocal, operating bar having a spring pressed catch for moving said arm in opposition to said spring.
23. A machine of the character described including, in combination, a reciprocal head feeding slide, a head pressing; finger mounted to rockinto and out of the end of a box body at one side of said body, a plate:
movable into and out of a different portion of the same end of the box body, and means adapted to move said finger and plate to press first one side and then the opposite side of said head into the box body and there after move said finger and plate out of the box body, said means including an oscillatable arm operatively connected to said plate, a spring operatively connected to move said arm in one direction and a power actuated, reciprocal, operating bar having a spring pressed catch for. moving said arm inopposition tosaid spring, a presser foot, a spring for pressing said foot against a head adjacent the body to receive such head, said first mentioned spring being stronger than the latter, said foot having an extension adapted to be actuated by said plate to lift said" foot against opposition of the latters spring.

A machine of the character described including, in combination, a reciprocal head feeding slide, a head pressing finger mounted to rock into and out ofthe end of abox body atone side of said body, plate movable into and out of a different portion of the same end the box body, means adaptedto move saidfinger and plate to press first one side and then the opposite side of said head into the box body and thereafter move said finger and plate out'of the box :body, said means including an oscillatabl-e arm operatively connected tosaid plate, a. spring operatively connected to move said arm in one direction and a power actuated, reciprocal, operating bar having a spring pressed catch for moving said arm in opposition to said spring, a presser foot, a sp ing for pressing said foot against a head adjacent the body to receive such head, said first mentioned spring being stronger than the latter, said foot having van extension adapted to be actuated by said plate to lift said foot against opposition of the latters spring, and means to guide said plate into the box body including a guide barupstanding from said plate between the shaft of said oscillatable' arm and the front end of said foot.
A machine of the character described including, in combination, a reciprocal head feeding slide, a head pressing linger mount ed to rock'into and out of the end of a box body at one side of said body, a plate movable into and out of a different portion of the same end ofthe box body, means adapted to move said finger and plate to press first one side and then the opposite side of said head into the box body and thereafter move said finger and plate out of the box body, said means including a rock shaft to Whih said finger is operatively connected having an arm, a power actuated reciprocal, operat ing baradapted to actuate said arm to rock said shaft in one direction, and a spring operatively connected to rock said shaft in the opposite direction.

A machine of the character described including, in combination, a reciprocal head feeding slide, ahead pressing finger mounted to rock into and: out of the end of a box body atone side of said body, a plate movable into and out of a different portion of the same end of the box body, means adapted. to move said finger and plate to press first one side and then the opposite side of said head into the box body said means including rock shafts to which said finger and plate are operatively connected, respectively, a power actuated, reciprocal, operatingbar adapted torock each of said shafts in one direction," and springs for rocking said shafts in the opposite direction, said operating bar having a spring pressed catch and the rock shaft connected to said plate having an arm adapted to be engaged by said catch to rock said arm in opposition to its spring.

A machine of the character described including, a support for a box body, and head inserting mechanism comprising two fingers each adaptedto presson a head to insert same in a box body, and means adapted to impart inserting movement to each of said fingers and cause the part of the'head engaged by one finger to be inserted before insertion of the complete head is effected.

A machine of the character described including, a support for a box body, a press- I er foot adjacent the box body for yieldingly holding a head, a plurality of fingers adapt ed to move into and out of the box body and press a head into the box body, and means adapted to cause said fingers and foot to cooperate to insert a head in said body, one
