a driving pulley 25'being secured to the shaft I 24 and adapted to receivea belt-26 that may be driven from any suitable sourceof power. Contained within this pulley is one member of a roller clutch of any well known construction, this clutch comprising a bearing ring 27 i the endwise movement hereinbefore men- I tioned but to effect its rotation. The clutch is actuated by means of a clutch actuator in the form of a housing 29 inclosing spiral springs, one emlofeach of which springs is secured to the housing and the other end to the clutch member 28, so that the tendency of the springs is to impart rotating movement to said housing and said member in opposite direction, the housing having fingers projecting between the rollers to move them into or out of clutching position. The action of the springs is to move the rollers into clutching position, and the parts being in rotation a shoulder 30 on the housing or actuator striking the end of a clutch releasing lever 31 stops rotation of said actuator, and the spindle still traveling forwardly the clutch rollers are released, thereby stopping rotation of the spindle 16. The open end of the housing is closed by a flange on the clutch member 28 and to which flange one end of each of the clutch springs hereinbefore referred to is secured.
The hollow shaft 24 has a pulley 32 secured thereto that receives a belt 33 for driving other parts of the machine and including feed rollers for mop material to be hereinafter referred to. The spindle 16 is forced endwise to unclamp the chuck jaws 15 by a spring 34 located in a recess in the end of the spindle and thrusting against a plunger that is forced against a cap within the end of the pulley 32, and as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings.
The jaw clamping collar 21 is actuated as by means of a hand'lever 35 secured to a rock shaft 36 mounted in the bracket 12 on the head stock, the end of said lever having teeth to mesh with the teeth of a rack on the slide 22 that has fingers extending into an annular groove in the collar 21, and as shown in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings. The lower end of the rock shaft 36 has a pinion the teeth of which mesh with the teeth of a rack sleeve 37 secured to one end of a connecting rod 38 eX- tending to a clamping mechanism of a tail stock to be hereinafter described.
A wire centering mechanism comprises centering fingers 39-40 pivotally supported on one of the uprights 13 of the head stock, and as shown in Figure 9 of the drawings, these fingers being operatively connected by intermeshing teeth, the finger 40 being connected by a link with an arm 41 secured to the end of a rock shaft 42 having a cam slot 43 that receives the inner end of a pin 44 projecting inwardly from the slide 22, and as shown in Figure 11 of the drawings.
It thus will be seen that when the handle 35 is operated to actuate the levers 19 to clamp wires in the chuck, the fingers 39 and 40 will be simultaneously operated to center said wires, said fingers engaging said wires on op- 'posite sides and moving them toward each other, the cam slot being so arranged that the wires will be centered before the chuck jaws are closed together to fully clamp said wires.
Atail stock 45 is mounted on the beam 11 at the opposite end of the machine from the head stock, said tail stock being mounted for a limited sliding movement on the beam. A stationary clamping jaw 46 is secured to the tail stock and a movable clamping jaw is secured to a clamping jaw lever 47 pivotally mounted on the tail stock and operated. as by means of a cam 48 on a shaft 49 mounted in the tail stock and having a pinion at its lower end, the teeth of which are engaged with the teeth of a. rack sleeve 50 secured to the connecting rod 38 at the end thereof opposite to the rack sleeve 37.
Centering fingers 51-52 are secured at the ends of rock shafts 53-54 mounted in the tail stock, the shaft 53 having a spring to rock it in one direction and the shaft 54 having an arm 55 for rocking said shaft in a direction opposite to that caused by said spring, the fingers 51 and 52 having interengaging teeth whereby when one is operated the other is likewise operated. The arm 55 is engaged by a finger 56 on a shaft 57, which shaft has a projecting toe 58 engaged by a spring pressed tail stock, the bottom wire from the rack fall- 2 ing into a groove on a table 62. A layer of mop material 63 composed of strands of cotton or other threads is projected across said wire on the table, by mechanism not herein specifically described, and during a pause in the feed of'such mop material a second wire is dropped from the rack 61 on top of the mass of material. The hand lever 35 being new operated by swinging it to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 of the drawings, the slide 22 is moved to the right and by reason of the pin 44 engaging the cam slot 43 the rock shaft 42 is rotated to move the centering fingers 39 and 40 toward each other to center the wires hereinbefore men tioned. This movement of the lever 35 rocks the shaft 36 and thereby moves the rack sleeve 37 and rod 38 toward the right, and by reason of the connection of said rod with the pinion on the shaft 49 said shaft is turned and the cam thereon operates the shaft 57 and thereby the shafts 53 and 54 to move the two centered wires.

Immediately following this centering operation the m'ovement of the hand lever 35 described operates the slide to actuate the clamping eollar21, thereby moving the spindle 16 longitudinally against the tension of its spring and closing the jaws 15 upon the At the same time the rotation of the shaft i9 in the tail stock, in the manner just hereinbefore' described, causes the cam 48 to operate the clamp lever 47 to clamp the centered wires, and immedi ately following the clamping of the wires the form of the slot 43 is such as to return the centering fingers 39 and 4,0 to their released positions, or move them away from the wires, this reverse movement of the centering lingers taking place between the time that the clamping jaws begin to grip the Wires and the time that the full grip takes place. The spindle being new operated as by connecting the clutch members 2728, this by means of the clutch rollers, the spindle 16 will be rotated to twist the wires and thus secure the mate rial therein. It will be understood that previous tothis twisting operation and after the wires have been centered and clamped, mechanism not specifically herein shown and described, but as embodied in my 'copending application S. No. 120,860 will operate to cut the mass of material engaged with the wires and sever it frointhe main portion thereof.
After the twisting operation the movement of the lever 35 to an opposite position, and as shown in full lines in Figure 1, will release the clamping jaws at both ends of the machine in a manner that will be readily under stood from the foregoing description, the
spring 34 of the spindle 16 moving said spindle to loosen the jaws 15, and this movement of the lever 35 through the connecting rod 38 operating the shaft 49 and the cam 48 thereon to release the clamping jaw on'the lever 47;
If desired, a manually operated shaft 64 may be mounted in the tail stock in toothed engagement with the shaft 49 and having a hand lever 65 operated as by means of a handle 66, as shown in Figures 5 to 8 of the draw- 'lls a means for controlling starting and stopping operations of the spindle and twist ing mechanism a starting lever handle 67 is pivotally mounted on the beam 11 and with its opposite end in the path of movement of a stepping rod 68 slidably mounted on the beam in the path of movement of the tail stock 45, said rod being forced by a spring to move in a direction opposite to that caused by the tail stock. This handle lever is held in contact with clutch actuating rod 69 slidably mounted in the bracket 12. as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, said rod being forced into contact with the lever by means ofa spring on the rod, and a detent 70 on a detent lever 71 holds said lever against movement under the influence of said spring, as shown in Figures 2 and 4- of'the drawmgs.
A clutch actuating lever 72 is pivotally spring pressed plunger 78 located in an 6X5 tension li'rom the clutch releasing lever 31 hereinbefore described.
The handle lever 67 is released by a down ward swinging movement of the table 62 operated by a foot treadle, (not herein shown butillustrated' and described in my copending application S. No. 120,857, filed concurrently herewith) said table forcing a plunger Mdownwardl the detent lever 71 being pivetally attached at one end to-said plunger and thereby swung on its pivot to disengage the detent 70 from said lever 67.
The tail stock, as hereinbefore mentioned, has a limited sliding movement on the beam 11, it being remarked'that as the wires are twisted they are shortened, and this causes a movement of the tail stock toward the head stock or bracket 12. v In this movement of the tail stock it comes in contact with the rod 68 and moves said rod into contact with the handle lever 67, swinging said lever. on its pivot and moving it out of the path ofmovement of the detent 70 and against the force of a spring (not shown) acting upon the plunger 7 i. The d'etent thereupon moves upwardly into the path .of said lever to hold it against movement upon release of pressure on the rod 68 when the tail stock moves in the opposite direct-ion to that just described.
This movement of the lever 67, through the rod 68 and lever 72, operates the clutch releasing lever 31, placing its end in the path of the shoulder 30 on the housing 29 to thereby actuate theclutch and stop rotation of the winding spindle.
When the tail stock has been moved forward by the shortening of the wires in twisting, as .hereinbefore described, upon release of the jaws onthe tail stock to release the wires the tail stock is moved baclmvardly under the influence of a weight secured to the lower end of a cord or strap 7 5.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with. the device which 1 now consider to repreles material therebetween and including a twist-- ing spindle comprising chuck jaws, means for supplying wires to sand aws, means for centering the wires between the aws, means for closing said jaws, a connection between said centering means and jaw closingmeans for simultaneous operation of both, and means for holding the opposite ends of the wires.

Mechanism for twisting wires with material therebetween and including a twisting spindle comprising chuck jaws, means for supplying wires to said jaws, a pair of centering fingers pivotally mounted and having a toothed connection to simultaneously swing said fingers in opposite directions to engage wires on opposite sides thereof to center them between the jaws, means for closing said jaws, a connection between one of said fingers and the jaw closing means for simultaneous operation of both fingers, and means for holding the ends of the wires.
6. Mechanism for twisting wires with material therebetween and including a twisting spindle comprising chuck aws, means for supplying wires to said jaws, a pair of centering fingers pivotally mounted, a rockshaft operatively connected with said fingers to swing them in opposite directions to engage wires on opposite sides thereof to center them between the jaws, means for closing said jaws, a connection between said closing means and said shaft for simultaneous operation of both, and means for holding the opposite ends of said wires.

Mechanism for twisting wires with matorial therebetween and including a twisting spindle comprising chuck jaws, means for supplying wires to said jaws, a pair of centering fingers pivotally mounted, a rock shaft having an arm operatively connected with said fingers to swing them in opposite directions to engage wires on opposite sides thereof to center them between said jaws, means for closing said jaws, a connection between said jaw closing means and said shaft for simultaneous operation of both, ano means for holding the opposite ends of said wires.
8. Mechanism for twisting wires with material therebetween and including a twisting spindle comprising chuck jaws, means for supplying wires to said jaws, a pair of contering fingers pivotally mounted and having a toothed engagement to swing said fingers in opposite directions to engage wires on opposite sides and center them between said jaws, a rock shaft having an arm operatively connected with one of said fingers, means for closing said jaws, a connection between said jaw closing means and said shaft for simultaneous operation of both, and means for holding the opposite ends of said wires. v 9. Mechanism for twisting wires with material therebetween and including a twisting spindle comprising chuck jaws, means for supplying wires to said jaws, a pair of centering fingers pivotally mounted, a. rock shaft operatively connectedv with said fingers to swing them in opposite directions to engage the wires on the opposite sides thereof to center them between tively connected with said rock-shaft to swing it in opposite directions, means for operating said slide, a connection between said slide and said jaws for operation of the lat ter, and means for-holding the opposite ends of said wires.
10. Mechanism for twisting wires with material therebetween and including a twisting spindle comprising chuck jaws, means for supplying wires to said jaws, a pair of centering fingers pivot-ally mountecha rocl: shaft operatively connected with said fin ers to swing them in opposite directions to engage wires on opposite sides thereof to center them between the jaws, said. shaft having cam slot, a slide having a pin extending into said slot to swing said shaft in opposite directions, means for operating said slide, a connection between said slide and said jaws for operation of the latter, and means for holding the opposite ends of said wires.
