SAFETY HOOK.
Application filed February 23, 1928. Serial No. 256,144.
This invention relates .to safety hooks, and particularly to that class of safety hooks employed in connection with oil and gas well drilling and operating apparatus, the
present invention being especially designed closure means for preventing the means carried thereby from becoming accidental- .ly disconnected. therefrom.
The prime ob ect of my invention is to provide, in a hook of the character specified,
a closure member andefficient actuating and locking means for the said closure member.
In the accompanying drawings,'which illustrate an application' of my invention:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a hook embodying my invention; I
Fig; 2, a front elevational view; 7 Fig. 3, a sectional view taken on the line IH HI of Fig. 1, showing the closure member actuating means positioned on said member midway of its travel; and
Fig. 4:, an enlarged detail sectonal view of the closure member.
Referring to the drawings, and as ,pre fer-red, my improved hook comprises a body portion. f rugged construction, a shank or neck portion 6 having a collar 7 and a bill portion 8. Said hook is designed to be supported from a cross-head 9 of a clevis 10. As illustrated, the upper end of the neck 6 is threaded, as shown at.1 1, to receive a,
cap-nut 12 mounted on anti-friction bearing 13, interposed between the nut and the crosshead, and the clevis'is secured to the cross-.
head by trunnions' 14:. It will be understood that this construction will permit the hook to swivel relatively to its support; however, means are provided. to prevent the swiveling action when desired. These means comprise a boss 15 preferably welded to the neck portion of the hook adjacent to the collar 7, a spring pressed pin 16, and a recess 17 formed in the cross-head.
The mouth or the opening of the hook is adapted to be controlled by a latch or closure member, and this member, together with the combined actuating and locking means for the closure member, constitute important and characteristic features of the present inven tion, The closure member, designated generally by the numeral 18, is preferably of the form particularly shown by the detail view of Fig. i, and is designed to be pivotally mounted on a piv'otpin19 carried in a boss 20 formed on or welded to theneck of the hook.
Member 18is cored out or cutaway, as shown at 21, and 'is provided with an opening 22 in its front face to enable it to be 'pivotally mounted on the boss 20 and to 'overlapthe hook or its neck portion when moved-to. open position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The front face of the closure member, for a portion of its length, is fiat, as shown at 23, and for a portion of' itslength is arched orcurved, as shown at. 24-, and adjacent the ends ofthe arched por tion, upper and lower recesses or notches .25 'and'26 are provided. The lower end of the closure member is cut away at 27- to snugly fitthe bill portion of the hook when in closed position.
\ The closure memberactuating and. locking means comprises a. pivotally mounted yokelike structure 28 designed tobe mounted on a pivot pin 29 carriedinlugs or a boss 30 welded or otherwise secured to the neck portion 6 of the hook. As illustrated and as preferred, the said actuating and locking means includes. yoke castings or members 31. a yoke or U-member 32 having aroller contact arranged on the front face of the closure member, and means for yield-- ingly mounting member 32 on members .31. Said'yielding means lnclude a spring 34 positioned in each of" the tubular chambers 35 of the casting 31, a bushing or follower 36,
tact roller 33 is moved out of the notch 25,
over the curved portion 2a of closure member 18, and into the notch 26.
To again close the hook opening, the yoke is strong upwardly, causing the travel of the highest point of the are or curved portion of the face of the closure member is on the center line of the pin on which it pivots.
I claim:
.1. In a safety hook, a pivotally mounted closure-member and pivotally mounted clo sure-member actuating and locking means movable substantially longitudinally on the closure-member to move said member from open to closed position and lock the member in closed position.
2. In a safety hook, a pivotally mounted closure-member, and pivotally mounted closure-member actuating and locking means movable substantially longitudinally on the closure-member to move said member from closed to open position and lock the member in open position.
3. In a safety hook, a pivotally mounted closure-member, and pivotally mounted closure-member actuating and locking means movable on the closure-member to move said member from open to closed position and lock the member in closed position, said actuating and locking means including a resiliently mounted member bearing upon and arranged to travel substantially longitudinally on the closure-member for effecting a movement thereof.
4. In a safety hook, a pivotally mounted closure-member having a face thereof provided with a curved bearing portion and depressions adjacent the curved bearing, and
one on each side of the axis of the closure member and actuating and locking means movable substantially longitudinally on the face of the closure-member and over said curved bearing from one side of the axis of said closure member-to the other side to effect a movement of said member, and into the depressions thereof to lock the closuremember.
5. In a safety hook, a closure member therefor pivotally mounted intermediate its ends, and expansible and contractile actuating and locking means for said member,
said means being pivoted for movement substantially longitudinally of said member and across the axis of said member and for engagement with the member on opposite sides of said axis.
6. In a safety hook, a closure member therefor pivotally mounted intermediate its ends, and an expansible and contractile actuating and locking means for said member, said means being carried by the hook and mounted for movement at a portion thereof in contact with and substantially longitudinally of said member and across the axis of said member for engagement with the member on both sides of said axis.
7 In a safety hook, a closure member therefor, van expansible and contractile means, said means being movable substantially longitudinally of the closure member and engageable with the member at spaced locations and in each location adapted to urge the same and lock it in a different position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
