CARRYING MECHANISM FOR CALCULATING MACHINES.

The invention relates to carrying mechanisms for calculating machines of the kind in which the adjustable carrying members are set in operative position by means of inter- .5 mediary members in the form of levers, pawls or similar devices arranged to co-operate with the counting wheels on one side and with said adjustable carrying members on the other side. In carrying mechanisms of this kind hitherto known said carrying levers or pawls are generally provided with resilient locking devices which have to be actuated by rather heavy springs in order to be able to keep said levers or pawls in position against the action of the forces of inertia occurring during. the counting operation, said forces being otherwise capable of causing a faulty operation of the carryingmembers. On the other hand, however, tooheavy springs will cause a heavy and irregular operation of the machine. One object of the present invention is to reduce the spring load on said intermediary carrying members or to do away entirely with the springs respectively. To this end, according to this invention, a number of auxiliary carrying members are inserted between the counting wheels and the carrying levers or pawls said auxiliary carrying members being adapted, upon being operated, to lock the appertaining levers or pawls'firmly in operative position.
This invention is-a division of my copending application for Letters Patent of the United States for improvements in calculating machines, filed June 30, 1922,'Serial No. 571,943.
- The invention will be more closely described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows an embodiment of the a totalizing counter with the appertaining carrying mechanism. Fig. 1 is a detail elevation partly insection showing the member 13 infull lines in the position which is indiinvention. Fig. 1 is'a cross sectional view of wheel will actuate a cam-shaped projection {5 forming the upper end of an auxiliary carrymg member 6 consisting of a two-armed lever pivoted to the shaft 4 of the transmission wheels 5 of the totalizing counter. I The lever 6 is thereby swung into the operative position shown in the drawing. The carrying pawls consist of two-armed levers 7 pivoted to a commonshaft 8. Normally, said pawls take up the position shown in chain lines in 1. In this position the upper end 9 of the pawl is pressed against the rear edge 10 of the lever 6 by means of a spring 24 fixed to the shaft 8 and bent round the outer edge of the pawl. When the lever 6 is swung into the position 70 shown the end 9 of the pawl 7. will slide along an inclined rear surface 11 of a, cam 12 provided at the upper end of the lever 6, whereby the pawl 7 is moved into the operative position shown in full lines. The lower end 18, of the pawl 7, which is provided with a cam surface 14, is then thrown against the peri hery of the carrying wheel 15. At the en of the shifting movement of the lever 6 the up per end 9 of the pawl will engage the u per surface of the cam 12' which forms a 100 ting abutment for the pawl. The upper ed e of said locking abutment is somewhat inc ined relatively to the tangential direction in such a manner that the pressure exerted by the end 9 of the pawl 7 on the said edge in the position shown in Fig. 1 will cause a turning moment on the lever 6 in a counter clockwise direction thereby locking the lever in this position. As a consequence, the carryin pawl 7 will be positively locked in operated position and at the same time the lever 6 will be kept in operated position by the pawl 7.
Each carrying wheel 15 carries two carrying teeth in the form of two- armed levers 16, 16 pivotally mounted on pins 17 secured to the wheel 15, one of said levers 16, being provided for adding operation and the other, 16, for subtracting operation. One end of each of said levers forms the carrying tooth 18 100 which is adapted to engage the transmission wheel 5, whereas the-other end forms a cam 19, which by the influence of a helical spring 20 normallyprojects beyond the periphery-of the wheel 15. In addition theretoeach wheel 105 15 is provided with a cam 21. The teeth 18, the cams 19, and the cam 21 are arranged to move in different vertical planes, when the wheel 15 is rotated. Thus, the teeth 18 are moving in the plane of the appertaining transmission wheel 5, whereas the cams 19 are arranged to co-operate with the lower end 13 of the pawl 7. The cam 21, on the other hand, is arranged to operate the tail-shaped end 92 of the lever 6 after the carrying operation has been completed, so as to move said lever away from the carrying wheel 15 thereby returning the lever into normal position.
After the totalizing counter has been operated, the carrying pawls 7 of all digits where a carrying operation is to take place, having thus been brought in position and locked in the manner described, all carrying wheels 15 will now be turned round by their common shaft 23 being rotated for one complete rovolution. The carrying wheels are then rotated in one or the other direction according as an addition or a subtraction is to be carried out. In the case first mentioned said wheels will be rotated in the direction of the arrow 25, Fig. 2. The cam 19 of the lever 16 will then engage the cam surface 14 of the carrying pawl 7, whereby the lever 16 is swung into operative position against the action of a spring 20, whereas the pawl 7 is kept in position by the cam 12 on the lever 6. By the actuation of the lever 16 the apertaining tooth 18 is swung out radially so as to engage the transmission wheel 5, thereby causing an angular displacement of the latter cor responding to one unit. During the following movement of the wheel 15 the lever 6 will be restored into normal position by the cam 21. As a consequence, the carrying pawl 7 is now released and by the influence of the spring 24 also the pawl 7 is restored to normal position.
In the case of subtracting operation, on the other hand, the carrying wheels are rotated in a counterclockwise direction, referring to .Figs. 1 and 2, and the lever 16 will then be swun by the carrying pawl 7, provided the latter as previously been shifted to operative position. In other respects, the operation is analogous with that described above.
It will be seen from the drawing that the provision of the auxiliary earr ing member 6 also has the advantage that t 10 movement to be transferred from the counting wheels may be augmented by making the lower arm 13 of the pawl 7 longer than the upper arm, and as a consequence the mechanism may be arranged to operate reliably and with great accuracy.
I claim: I
1. In a tens-carrying mechanism in combination, a controlling'member (6) adapted to be actuated by a number wheel, a carrying pawl (7) adapted to be operated through the medium of said controlling member, means (12) associated with said controlling member for locking the carrying awl in operative position, a carrying wheel (15), adjustable carrying teeth provided on said carrying wheel for the transfer of carrying movement to a number wheel of higher order and adapt-- ed to be made operative by the action of the carrying pawl upon rotation of the carrying wheel.
2. In a tens carrying mechanism in combination, a controlling lever (6) adapted to be shifted by the action of a number wheel, a carrying pawl (7) adapted to be operated through the medium of said controlling lever, a locking cam member connected with said controlling member for locking the carrying pawl in operative position, a carrying wheel (15), adjustable carrying teeth provided on said carrying wheel for the transfer of carrying movement to a number wheel of higher order and adapted to be made operative by the action of the carrying pawl upon rotation of the carrying wheel.
