JOINT BETWEEN METALLIC BUILDING ELEMENTS.

The present improvement relates to joints between metallic building elements, and more particularly to construction adaptable for doors and framing units where glazing or other panel filling elements may be employed.
It is among the objects of this invention to provide a construction which is simple and convenient for manufacture, strong and durable, consisting of few parts and pleasing in appearance, especially by the avoidance of exposed welded joints. Also the proposed construction is sanitary and otherwise desirable by the elimination of exposed crevices between a multiplicity of parts. ()thcr objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
This invention consists of the features hereinafter described,and particularly pointed out in the claims; the following descrip tion and the annexed drawing setting forth but one illustrative embodiment 9f the various forms in which the principle of the invention may be applied.
In said annexed drawing Fig. 1 is a broken interior perspective view showing part of the bottom of a door constructed in accordance with this invention; and Fig. 2 shows a fragmentary broken sectional detail.
Of the door thus chosen for the purpose of illustration, the parts or elements appearing in the foregoing figures include the stile 1, the bottom rail 2, and a reinforcing member 3. The joint between the side stile 1 and end or bottom rail 2 is featured by having the end of the bottom rail 2 bent in to form a reinforcing flange 4, and the stile 1 has a corresponding ottset or complementary flange 5 forming thereby a line joint 6, which it is desired should extend to th end of the stile. Such construction it will be seen, causes a projection formed of such complementary flanges to extend within the joint to the margin of the door and it is the especial purpose of this invention to provide a suitable and convenient means of reinforcing a joint under such circu1nstances.
The reinforcing member 3 preferably consists as shown of a piece of sheet metal bent into a channel section, with the opening of the channel directed down-wardly, although its position may be the reverse of that shown, if desired.
In order to permit such channel reinforcing member 3 to enter the stile and bottom rail where they adjoin, a portion of the flange 5 is cutaway to leave a notch 7 while to allow said reinforcing member to clear the remainder of the interfering metal, notches 8 are cut out of the web thereof, and the parts 11 of the flanges or vertical portions 9 of said member, which are adjacent to the notches 8 are embossed or pressed inwardly a suflicient amount to allow reinforcing member 3 to rest upon the inner surface of stile 1 and bottom rail 2 without touching projecjoint between hollow metallic building elements, the web of said channel having notches therein, and, adjacent to said notches, the flanges of said channel having sections thereof embossed or pressed inwardly to provide clearance for interfering projections on said elements.

In a joint for hollow metallic building elements the combination with inwardly di rooted, complementary flanges on the meeting edges of said elements, of a channel type reinforcing member, fitting into said elements, the web of said channel having notches therein and adjacent to said notches the flanges of said channel having sections there of embossed or pressed inwardly to provide clearance for the flanges on said elements, a portion of said last named flanges being removed to provide clearance for said channel member.
3. In a joint for hollow metallic building elements, the combination with an element channel being embossed or pressed inwardly having an inwardly directed reenforcing adjacent such notches to provide clearance flange and another element having an offset for the flanges on the aforesaid elements. 1 to receive said flange and form a line joint, Signed by me this 13th day of August,
