MENDING KIT.

Application filed December 14,1927. Serial No. 240,031.

This invention relates to an improvement in mending kits including a container in which are arranged the necessary articles for mending, such as spools of thread or the like, needles, and a thimble, these respective articles being packed into small compass and the spools of thread being so mounted as to be readily accessible for selective use when desired.

The invention comprises a container including a body portion and a cover, in which container is mounted a bar movable with respect to the container and carrying a series of spool-receiving spindles, the bar being mounted, in the preferred form, for automatic movement when the cover is opened, so that the spool-carrying spindles are elevated to permit the spools to be readily removed, the, container being provided with a needle tube from which the needles may be readily removed when desired for use.

The improved mending kit comprises a box-like container 1 having a hollow base portion 2 and a cover section 3 adapted,

when closed, to fit over the body section and be trietionally held in closed position. A bar l, corresponding in surface dimensions to the similar dimensions of the rear wall of the body section, is hingedly connected at 5 to the upper edge of such rear wall.

Spindles (3 project at right angles from the bar and are adapted to receive spools 7 of thread, silk, or other material, the spools being placed loosely on the spindles and the latter being terminally formed, as at 8, to prevent the accidental displacement of the spools while permitting their convenient application and reino val when desired.

and fitting closely against the forward wall thereof is a needle tube 9. This tube 18 designed to receive a suitable supply of needles and preferably inclines relative to the hori-. zontal so that'one end of the tube is directed slightly above the proximate side edge of the body. Thus, when the container is in substantially horizontal position, the needles are retained in the tube, being delivered therefrom, however, by a slight tilting of the body in a direction to cause the needles to move from the upper discharge end of the tube.

A spring or springs 10 are interposed beneath the bar 4, such springs being preferably in coil form and secured to the wall of the body so as to underlie and exert an outward pressure on the bar when the latter is free. Thus, when the cover of the container is closed, the spools will be forced into the body of the container, tensioning the springs 10, and as the cover is opened, the springs act to move the bar on its hinge connection, thereby elevating the free ends of the spin dles above the edge of the body, as indicated in the drawings, so that the spools are readily accessible for removal.

In the modified form shown in Figures 4 and 5, the parts just described are duplicated, and are indicated in such figures by the same reference numerals. In this form, however, the springs 10 are omitted and the bar 4 is provided with a projecting lip or finger-piece 11 which may be engaged by the finger when the'cover is opened, to tilt the bar and raise the free ends of the spindles precisely in the same manner as such spindles are automatically elevated by the springs. I

As an accessory of the mending kit, there is provided a collapsible thimble shown in section in Figure form of a finger stall 12 of appropriate length for service as a thimble and constructed of rubber or like material. A disk 13 is secured in the end of the finger stall in such position as to overlie the ball end of the finger when the thimble is in place to provide the necessary pressure member for. forcing the needle through the material. The' thimble member may be positioned to overlie the spools and will obviously collapse under the downward pressure of the cover, the disk 13 moving into a position substantially in flat contact with the spools.

When closed, the kit provides a compact, box-like member which may be handled in the sewing basket or other container Without liability of being opened and which, when opened, will present in a convenient form the thread, needles and thimble readily accessible for use when desired.

lVhat I claim to be new is:

1. A container having an opening, a cover to close the opening movable with respect to the container, a series of spool-holding members, and means tending to normally project the spool holding members out of the opening, said means permitting the spoolholding members to be moved into the container when the cover is closed.

2. A container having an opening, a cover to close the opening hinged to the container, a series of spool-holding members, means tending to normally project the spool holding members out of the opening, said means yielding in the closing of the cover to permit the spool-holding members to be moved as a unit into the container.
