UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAMI H. ROSE, OF JERSEY CBTY, NEW' JERSEY.
GARMNT SUPPORT.
Application filed December 9, 1927. Serial No. 238,888.
f ol the character described ot such construction that expert packing experience is' not. necessary in its employment.
Another object ogt my invention is a device ot the character described ot such coiistruction that when a number oit garments are piled upon each other, access may be obtaineifl to any one o'l` them Without disturbing the 'tolding ot the others.
rlhe above and other desirable attributes ot my device 'will be evident upon a consideration ot this specilication audits accompanyingj drawings.
The usual method ont packing a plurality of garments, such as ladies dresses, tor shipment is to fold them and place them one upon the other in a box or container. Unless the shipping container is ot exactly the proper size n'ith special reterenee to the depth, the garment will more during this shipnient resulting in the creasing and injuring ot the garments.
It is evident, therefore, that a large number oli boxes ot various sizes must be always in stock in order that the garn'ients may be packed to the best advantage.
Further it .is evident that it the garments are packed suiliciently tight to insure nonu movement during shipment, such packing will cause the ygarments to be so tightly pressed upon each other as to cause dan/lage thereto.
It is also evident that the best results can be obtained only by expert packers receivingwages in excess ot' ordinary labor.
It is 'further evident that when so packed, the removal oit the garments -from the packing box will nece, 'rate their resarrangement for purposes ot storing.
lt is also evident that the removal o't any garment will disarrange the folding and packing oit the others. o
All oit the ailiorementioned and other objectionable features incident to the packing ot garments in boxesare overcome by my invention which presents a means whereby a plurality ot' garments may be packed .for shipment in such condition that lthev will not be disarranged during` shipment handling-gj, that ordinary labor may accomplish thisI result, that any one oit the garments may be obtained Without disarrangiine' the told/- ing` ot the others, `that the use of shipping boxes is unnecessary, and that they niav be shared, or hung up separately while remaining' upon my device.
lilly device, therefore, is a most effective and economical means tor acconu'ilishine; the results desirable in the shipmentand storage ot garments. t'
In the-accompanying drawings illustrating one torni oit the device of my invention, similar parts are designated by similar numorals.
Figure 'l is a jiront view of one term of my device with a garment shown in dotanddash lines.
'Figure 2 is an end elevation oit Figure "1.
Figure 3 is a section through the line 3-3 ot Figure l.
rllhe particular 'form ot thedevice ot my.
invention shown in the accompanying drav'w eon'lprises a body member l0, composed ota heavy cardboard or other suitable material, attached to the upper portion ot 'which is a double. sided shoulder support ll. This shoulder support ll lis vtermed ot one piece ot cardboard, bent into a U-sha/i'ie havingrl an upwardly extended member ll within 'which is the upper portion ot' the body 510, the tivo being fastened together by the ystapls l2, i2. Each sidek ot the shoulder support il is scored alone` the lines A-A and l l2. to allow ofthe several parts being easily tolded over each other, 'tor purposes described later. The shoulder ll is ot such a shape as to contorni 'with the shoulder portion oil a garment.
A skirt supiiort ll is formed ol'i onefpiece ot cardlioard bent into a Ll-shape 'Witlrtlic central portion i3 extended, vwithin which the lower portion ot the body i0. the tivo being 'fastened together by the staples 14, l/l.
-While vit is not essential that the shoulder rsupport ll and the skirt support i3 have the V tion ot the garment.
, without sheets oicardboard and may then be wrapped in paper prefrespeetive shoulders l5 and 16, l prefer this constipation, as it allows ample garment space between the body l0 and the shoulder support and the skirt support.
rihe operation oit my device is as follows The device laid upon a table, and a dress i? is laid thereon. The shoulder support ll is then folded along the lines A A and BB and irserted within the upper portion i8 ot the garment and is 'then extended, thus forming a support for the upper pori The skirt support 13 is then placed within the lower portion 2O oit the garment.
ity will thus be noted that the garment rests practically flat and unfolded upon the body member l0 and is maintained in position by the shoulder support ll and the skirt It will be further noted that the device may be suspended in a vertical position by means ot a. nail or hook passed through the opening 2l and that the garment will be maintained in position.
The device is then reversed upon the table 'and a garment similarly positioned upon the exposed side ot the device. i Y
A plurality of the thus loaded devices may be plaoed upon each other, either with or between them,
erably with cardboard over the two exposed sides.
It will thus be seen that by ineans of my device a plurality ot garments may be readily packed for shipment and they will be maintained in piactically'their original positions during shipment, thus preventing the injury resulting from movement incident to the ordinary box packing. y
lt will be t'urther noted, that my device does away withV packingboxes and thus presents a means tor materiali i reducing the space occupied by theA packing means in both storage and shippino.
Itlurther obviates the necessity of having a stock ot boxes oit' different depths to accommodate a variety ot number otgarments. Y
My device thus presents a means for the economie and etiieient packing oi garments i with the prevention of injury to the gai'- ot inaintai ments due to tlie shitting ot their positions during shipping and li andling.
I do not limit myself to the particular size, shape, number, arranc lmentor material of parts as shown and described these are given simply as a means for clearly describing the. device oit my invention.
lVhat I claim l. In a is garment carrying device capable Ving a garment in an extended posltioii` in combination, a ilat body portion, a
downwardly extended shoulder support carried by one portion or" the body member ca- .positioiu in coi'nbination,
