HAIR WAVING DEVICE Filed July 21. 1928 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 16, 1929.

HAIR-wanna DEVICE.
Application filed July 21,
This invention relates to a device for waving or marcellinghair. I
The principal object of the invention 1s the provision of a device of the indicated charac ,ter embodying novel features of construction connection with the accompanying drawing, 7
. in which.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device .shown open.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device closed,
and parts being broken away to show certain features.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device shown i pair of elements 22 are similarly associated closed. I
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken approximately onthe line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring now. more particularly to the several views of the drawing, it will be apparent that, the device includes a pair oflever members and 11 which are connected with each other for relative pivotal movement by g a pivot 12. Each of the lever members 10 and Y11 has a handle 13. The lever member 10 has rigidly connected therewith a plurality of;-
waving members 14' and 15. Each of the waving members 14 1s 1n the form of a channel, the same being substantially ofU-shap The cross p ece 24 has a lug 29 with which i one end of a member 30 is pivotally connected as at 31, and. the oppositeend of said member 30 is pivotally connected as at 3 2 with'ainemin cross section, and each of said members 14 is provided witha longitudinal slot 16. The said waving members 14 are connected together in spaced and parallel relationship by members 17, respectively extending across the opposite ends thereof and secured toportions of the members 14 in any suitable manner. The lever member 10 is provided with angular portions which are respectively connected with the member 17 as at 18. The waving members are of similar shape, each being substantially J-shaped, and are respectively disposed at opposite sides of the group of waving members 14, and are also. attached at the opposite ends to said members 17. The lever member 11 has connected therewith transversely thereof a cross bar 19 with which are connected a plurality of hair waving members or irons 20. One end of each of the waving members or irons 20 is rigidly connected with the bar 19,and said irons 20are disposed 1928. Serial 1%(294516.
in spaced and parallel relationship, and-are adapted to move between the waving mem-- bers 14 and 15 120 cooperate therewith to produce simple waves in the hair.
In orderto convert the simple waves of the hair producedfby the waving members 14, 15
and 20 into compound or Marcel waves, there I -is provided means which is operated by the movement of the lever. members 10 and .11. V
The said means includes-pairs of hair engagmg elements 21 and22. Each of the elements 21 and 22 is in the form of a comb presenting teeth 23. The pair of elements 21 are connected together by a cross piece 24,.and the pair of elements 22 are connected together slot 16 of therelate'd member 14.} The other with the other two waving members 14, and
the teeth 23; of eachof these elements extending downwardly through the slot 160i the related member 14, asshownmost clearlyiin thereof which slide in contact with the-related i member14, Longitudinally disposed mem- Qbers 27 having the opposite, ends thereof re 3 spectlvely connected as at 28 with themember Y 17- prevent relativeupward movement ofthe elements 21 and 22 with respect to the waving, mambers 1 4, while .the' pins 26 prevent rela tive downw'ard movementof said elements.
ber 33 pivotally connected with the lever member 10,as at 34. The cross piece 25 has rigidly secured thereto an upstanding mem ber 35, the upper end of which ispivotally v connected as at 36 with one end of a member 37, the opposite end of which is pivotally connected as at 38 wlth the member33. The
lever member 11 has an .arm 39. I A. link 40 has one end thereof connected with the arm 39 by a pivot 41 which maybe disposed in any one of the holes 42 in said arm. The opposite end of the link 40 has a longitudinally disposed slot 48 which accommodates a pivot 44 1 on the member 37. The arrangement of the parts is such, that whenpressure is applied and 15, the elements 21 and 22 will be moved relatively to their related waving members 14, the elements 21 being moved forwardly, and the elements 22 being moved rearwardly while engaged with the strands of the hair,
just prior to the clamping engagement of the waving members 14, and with the strands of the hair.. It will therefore be understood that the waving members 14, 15
and 20 will produce simple waves in the hair,
while the elements 21 and 22 will further wave the hair to produce the well known marcel eiiect. The side portions of the waving members 14 and 15 will be flexible to some extent, and as a consequence the waving members or irons 20 will cooperate therewith to effectually crimp or crease the strands of hair,
r to the end that the waves in the hair will be well defined and lasting. By imparting relative separating movement to the handles 13, the device may be readily disengaged from the hair without in any Way deforming the waves produced.
It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the precise arrangement of parts shown and described, as details of construction may be modified and rearranged without departing from the spirit of the in- 1 vention, the scope of which is limited only by relatively spaced members which move between and cooperate withthe first group of members, means connecting the groups of waving members together for movement toward and away from each other, groups of:
hair engaging members respectively associated with and projecting through the convex waving members for relative longitudinal movement, means to move said groups of waving members toward and away from each other, and means operated by the operation of the last mentioned means to move the groups of hair engaging members relatively in opposite directions.
2. In a hair waving device, a group of interconnected spaced hair waving members each of which is substantially of U-shape in cross section and provided with a longitudinal slot, elements respectively associated with said waving members and each having hair engaging members which project through the slot in the related member, a second group of interconnected spaced hair waving members which cooperate with the first group to wave the hair when brought into clamping engagement therewith, lever means connecting the groups of waving members together for relative movement, means connecting groups of said elements together, and means actuated by the lever means in response to the actuation ofthe latter to move said groups of elements in relatively opposite directions, just prior to the full engagement of the waving members with the hair. I I
3. In a hair waving device, a palr of arms pivotally connected together, a group of waving members rigidly connected with one of surface of a plurality of the waving members of one group, and means connecting said hair engaging members together inindependent groups, and means connected withsaid arms Signed at New'York in the county of New York and State of New York this 19th dayoi July, A D. 1928. i 1
