HARRY DOUGLAS, 0F BRONSON, MICHIGAN.
cONTnoL MEANS.
Application filed February 23, 1927. Serial No. 170,189.
My invention relates to means for Icontrolling the ignition of an internal combustion engine, particularly of an automotive vehicle, and the principal object of my lnvention is to provide new and improved means of this type. In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part of this application I have shown, for purposes'of illustration, one form which my invention ma assume, and in these drawings:
igure 1 is a view showing this embodiment of my inventionas it appears from the dash board of an automobile;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Figure 1; while Figure 3 is a section on vthe line 3-3 of I Figure 2.
The embodiment of my invention herein disclosed is applied to an ignition coil 11 comprising a secondary l2 and a primary 13 wound about a suitable core 14 and enclosed within a theft-resisting metal tube 15 projecting beyond the two ends of the core .14, containing within one end 39 an insulating bushing 16 insulating that end of the winding 12, and having theotlier end 40 closed by means of a cap 17 provided centrally with an insulating bushing 18 carrying a contact 19 connected by means of a conductor 20 to one terminal of the secondary 12 and adapted to receive aconductor leading to the distributor, and carrying laterally of the insulating bushing 18 a pair of primary terminals 21 connected by means o conductors 22 to the outer ends of the primary 13 of the coil 11; and the embodiment of my invention herein disclosed comprises a metal cup 23 adapted to be inserted within the relatively open end 39 of the tube 15, and a metal container 24 adapted to be disposed with its edge abutting the edge of the metal cup 23, and the end 39 of the tube 15, and to then have its'edge rolled with the edges of the cup 23 and with the end 39 of the tube 15 into a single seam 25 untiting the tube` 15 and the cup 23 and the container 24 into a single enclosure; secured together`V primarily by the seam 25; secured together additionally by a base 26 united to the tube 15 and cup 23 by means of pins 27 extendin through the tube 15 and cup 23 into the ase 26, andA to the container 24 b means of similar pins 2 8 extending through the container 24 into the base 26; enclosing the ignition coil 11 between the base 26 and the end closure 17; and providing between the base 26 and the front wall 29 of the container 24 a chamber 30 for the reception `of control means herein shown as comprising a lock 31 supported in a recess 32 formed by upsetting the central portion of the front 29 of the container 24, held against rotationin any suitable manner as by welding, operable by means of a key 33, and carrying on the rear end of its barrel 34 a switch bar 35 carrying at its ends contacts 36 connected by means of a suitable conductor 37 and adapted to engage cooperating contacts 38 carried by the base 26 and connected by conductors 40 to the two sides of a gap introduced at an intermediate point of the primary winding 13 of the ignition coil 11.
From the above description it will be understoodhby those skilled in the art that I have provided a. unit containing an element essen.- tial for the operation of the ignition system, and means controlling this element, mounted in casings adapted to be -assembled into a single enclosure enclosing this element and this controlling means and rendering this element inaccessible and inoperable except by the key controlling the lock 31, that with the parts in position permitting the removal of the key and the locking of the switch the circuit through the ignition coil is effectively interrupted, and held interrupted, to be reestablislied only by re-insertion of the key, and rotation of the key to bring the parts into the position shown in Figure 2.
Under tliese circumstances it will be obvi- -ous to those skilled in the art that I have provided new andimproved control means particularly adapted to the ignition circuit of an internal combustion engine of an automotive vehicle. At the same time, however, it will also be obvious to those skilled in the art that the particular embodiment of my invention herein shown and described may be variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit of my invention, or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and that my invention may be employed other than to control tlie ignition coil of the ignition system of an internal combustion engine of an automotive vehicle, and accordin ly it will be understood that the disclosure erein is illustrative only,'aiid that my invention is not limited thereto'.
