bApplication filed October 8, 1,927. SJerial'No. 224,950,-
The present invention relates to an imfor covering` and sheltering small chioks, and supplying them with sufficient heat and warmth for protection, and to aid in rearing.
riefly described, the invention comp'rises a conical canopy, supporting legs therefor for inaintaining the canopy in spaced relation from the supporting surface, an external heater and fuel supply,`-a thermosta-tic regulator for the heater, and a novel heatconducting fluelor pipe which is associated with the canopy to insure uniformheat distribution beneath the canopy.
he principaly Vfeature .upon which the novelty of this application is based is the const-ruction and location of the heat conducting pipe which, as before stated, isA especially designed for uniform distribution, with aview toward keeping the small chicks separated and preventing them from piling on each other, and causing premature death.
The details forming this alleged novelty will become more readily apparent from the,
following` description and drawings.
In the drawings V l Figure 1 is a side elevation of the coinplete structure showing one embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailelevational view showing the heater and the thermostatic control.
' Fig. 4 is a top plan view with the canopy removed showing a slightly difierent formation of heat Conducting pipes.
In the drawings, the reference'character 5 designates generally thesheet metal canopy,'which as before stated is in the xforni of a cone, to causethe heat to flow downwardly and toward the other edges' Inoidentally, this canopy is formed. in the top with a vhand hole which is provided with a cover plate 6. I V
Also, suitable supporting legs 7 are provided. Located at onev side of the canopy is an appropriate oil burner or lamp designated 'generally'by the reference character 8. Supported on one side of the burner is a fuel supply receptacle or container 9 connected through the medium vof a Conducting pip-e 10. As better shown in FigS, a lever 11 is fastenecl to the wi'clr of the burner in a manner not shown. I
' Adjustably connected with the lever and rising therefroin isa link- 12`connected with a yoke 13 which is in turn connected with a heat. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, this thermostatic rod member 14. This rod member -is connected in anyiappropriate manner with a heat controlled therinostat 15. Itis to,
- be mentioned here, that this therinostatic control ldevice is vthe subject matter of niylPatent No. 1,634,003, granted to iiie under date ofJune 28, 1927. Therefore'this device is not lherein claimed,.but is used to render the'structure complete y'and efiicient.
Connected With the heater 8 is an especially designed pipe for condu-cting the gases, and I.
clu`des a relatively long 'horizontal` branch :16 loading from theheater and beneath the .'canopy. The branch is then bent as `at 1'7b and'terminates in a 'relatively short'parallel branch. 18.` f
'The branch 18 in 'turn terminatesin a veri tical flue 19 *Which extends upwardlyi through anl opening in the canopy. 'At this time attention is directed to a plate20, seeV Fig; 13,b
supported from thebranches 16 and .18 through pipe in'- the medium of straps 21. rThe 4purposeof;
this plate is` to provide a support for the.
aforesaid thermostat'15.
in Fig. 4, asian. Conducting pipe i; oft
an extension. V branch 18instead of terminating in the flue 19, terminates in a lsubstantially C-shaped 'a different configuration, in that it includes In otherwords, the short'.
part.b One arin 22 of the C is connected with the branch 18 by a bend 23, thisbeing 'some-1- what in the form ofa return bend to dispose the arm 22 in parallelism with the branch'18.
The intermediate portion of thislextension as I V indicated' at 24, is` disposed in lparallelisin withthe aforesaidbend 17, Vwhile the remaining arm or branch 25 is disposed inspaced.
para-llelism to the .first-named branch 16. i
' In fact, it'terminates near the center of this branch 16 in a vertical flue'26, which extends upwardlythrough `the canopy; 'Thus,
thefflue in this instance, extends through the I canopy at a point soinewliat opposite to that 1 shown in Fig. 2 at 19. In either instance the heat Conducting pipe is constru'cted'with .ax V
view toward conveying the heat over a. considerable area 'beneaththe canopy, with a' view toward evenlyldistributing it, and providing uniformheatfor the smallchiolrs.v 'V j The advantage gained from this arrangement is based upon the construction'of the f heat coiiveyingpipe which is, dispose'd Vin ahorizontal. planebeneath the canopyx 'The .warm air from the lamp gradually cools as V it passes around the pipe to thefoutlet flue.,.
This causes an equal temperature at allpoints uncerneath the canopy. As before indicated, the temperature can be regulated by the operator through the'rnedium of the therniostatic regulator already described.
This brooder can pieces, it can be easily taken apart for cleani ing, and it can be again set up for use for nor- Vinvention claimed may mal-heat Within a few minutes. The brooder is c substantially fire-proof, smolreless and odorless, and is perfectly safe and e'liicient When operated according to the construction.
t is believed, however, that these advantages Will be quite clear to persons reading the description in connection With the drawings. Therefore, xa more lengthy 'description is thought unnecessary. I V
Minor changes coming` Within thefield of beresorted to if desired. f
HavingV thus I claim as new is ,In a brooder of the class described, a substantially conical canopy, supporting legs therefor, a heater, a Conducting pipe, connected With .said heater and e-Xtending upbe used in a tent or otherv bu1ldmg free from draft. It being 1n three described myV invention, What being of general C-shaped form and includ-V.
ing an arm disposed in parallelismwithsaid short. branch, an interme'diate port-ion disiiamed bend, anda final arm disposed in spaced parallelism to the 'first-named long branch, said 'last-named arm terininating in a vertical flue extending upwardlyl through an opening. in the canopy, togetherwith a plate, straps connected with said plate and embracing the long and short branches of saidV pipe, a therinostat supported on said plate, I
a thermostatic 'rod connected With said thermostat, and a Wick operating device connected With said thermostatic rod and `associated With said heater. I I
