Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN BAKEWELL, JR., OF PITTSBUBG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOLDS FOR GLASSWARE.
Speoication forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,464, dated November 30, 1875; application iled November 5, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, BENJAMIN BAKE- WELL, Jr., of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and' State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molds for Glassware 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part ofthis specification, in which- Figure l is a view of a jointed mold with interchangeable plug, illustrating my inven; tion. Fig. 2 is a section of one-half the mold and plug on the line .fr a', Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plug.
Like letters refer to like parts wherever they OGCUI.
My invention relates to the construction of that class of molds wherein interchangeable plugs are employed to produce words, figures, or designs upon the glass articleformed in said mold; and it consists in conntersinking or recessing the plug or mold at the junction of the two, so that a design or border is produced in the glass on the lines where the moldmark would otherwise occur.
I will now proceed to describe my improve ments, so that others skilled in the art to which they appertan may apply the same.
In the drawing, A Al are the halves of a sectional'mold adapted for blown Ware, such as bar-bottles, &c., hinged as at a, and one of the sections A slotted, as at a', for the reception of the'interchangeable plug B. This slot a is generally tapered, so as to, regulate the introduction of plug B, and to prevent it from projecting farther beyond the inner surface of the mold than is required. The edges of the inner face of plug B are cnt away or recessed, as at b, so as to form, together with the edge of the slot a', a sunken border or design, inclosing the words, letters, or `figures formed on 0r in the face of plug B, so that, 'as the edges at the junction of the plug and mold wear away, all liability of a distinct or irregular mold-mark being formed on the article is obviated by the provision thus made to hide the mark.
It is evident that the recess b, if preferred, may be made in the edge of slot a', and that the invention is equally applicable to one-part or sectional inolds.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl The combination of the mold and interchangeable plug, recessedupon the inner surface at the junction of the two parts, substantially as and for the purpose specified. I
In testimony whereof I, the said BENJAMIN BAKEWELL, Jr., have hereunto set my hand.
BEN JAMIN v BAKEWELL, JR.
