BARREL LIFT Filed May 21, 1927 Patented Mar. 5, 1929.
d'lA'llES GEORGE J. IMILLER, 01? BS0131", IOWA.
BARREL LIFT.
Application filed May 21,
This invention aims to provide a simple means whereby one man can handle a heavy barrel or oth 1' container, and swing it to and from an approximately horizontal position.
Figure 1 is a side elevation; Figure 2 is a top plan and Figure 3 is an end elevation.
i The device includes arched rockers 1, preferably angle members, each including acurved body 2 and a straight man 3 one end of the body the body portions of rockers being joined by cross braces 1 and transverse connections 5 at the ends of the braces, the arms 3 being joined by a trai'isverse connection 15. 'lfie rods 6 connect the ends of the rockers 1, and on the tie rods 6 are mounted hook-shaped clips 7 adapted to engage the chines of a bari rel or drum the clips being held on the tie rods and the tie rods being held in the ends of the rockers 1 by nuts 8 threaded on the tie rods.
A transverse shaft 9 is mounted to rock in the bodies of the members 1, and is supplied intermediate its ends with a loop-shaped prop On end of the shaft 9 is a handle 11 of considerable weight adapted to engage a stop 12 Which may be placed in any one of a number of holes 16 formed in the body 2 of one of the rockers 1.
Suppose that the device is placed on a barrel or other cylindrical container, as shown in lligure 1 and that the barrel is standing up on the end that marked by the numeral 1 1. 'lhen, a singlc person can turn the barrel over ei'idwise easily, and bring the barrel down into the position shown in Figure 1., so that the contents of the barrel can be drained out 1927. Serial No. 193,325.
by the usual spigot (not shown) that is in serted into the end of the barrel. The barrel and the rocker frame are swung in the direction of the arrow A in Figure 1, a little beyond the position shown in that figure. The Weight of the handle 11 causes the prop 10 to swing in the direction of the arrow B into the position shown in Figure 1 and then the device is permitted to rock back until it is supported by means of the prop 10. When the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 1, the handle 11 hits against the stop 12. The stop 12 may be put in any o1 the holes 16, thereby to vary the position of the prop 10 with res ect to the floor 17, and to adjust the position of the barrel'or other container with respect to the horizontal.
What is claimed is A barrel hoist comprising arched rockers, ineansfor holding a barrel or the like on the rockers means for connecting the rockers to form a rigid structure, a transverse shaft journaled in the rockers and supplied intermediate its ends with a projecting prop a handle on one end of the shaft and extended upwardly above one rocker for convenient manipulation, and a stop on said rocker and wherewith the handle is adapted to engage, the handle being heavy enough to rotate the shaft, bring the prop into Working position, and cause the handle to engage the stop as aforesaid. 1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto allixed my signature.
