UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
WILLIAM s. BOOTH, 0F BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STAGE PLANKS AND C ARRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,335, dated November 23, 1875; application filed September 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. BOOTH, of Baton Rouge, in the parish of East Baton Rouge and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Stage Plank and Carrier, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved stage plank and carrier, showing the plank in position for thepassengers to walk over it. Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing the plank raised to uncover the rollers for carrying freight; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation, taken on line as a: of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A and B represent three boards or planks I forming the stage-plank, being placed side by side close together, on a frame, 0, which carries a series of rollers or drums, I), immediately below the boards, and forming rests for them. The middle board B is detachable, and brackets E are provided along one side of the frame to support it when removed from the rollers.
. The other two boards, A, are hinged to the frame 0, to swing up and form vertical guides to the carrier, as represented in Fig. 3, when boards A may be made wide enough to cover 7 the rollers without it, if preferred. In this case the rollers are all onnected by a crank,
F, with a driver, G, and one of the rollers carriers a pulley, H, to which the power is applied by a belt, crank, or other means. The power may be obtained frc m an engine on the boat or vessel, or from any competent source on shore.
The apparatus may be constructed so as to be shipped aboard of the vessel, and carried along for use at all the landings, or each landing may be provided with its own special apparatus.
I am aware that parallel toothed rolls, connected and operated to carry lumber, have been before used; but A What I claim is- The frame 0, having connected rollers D, movable boards A B, and brackets E E, arranged, as shown aud described, for transferring cotton.
