UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE),
ANTON w nnmnn, 0F QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
OUTLET BOX.
Application filed June 1,
My invention relates to outlet boxes such and the formation of such plaster or wall board is frequently unadapt'ed for rigidly attaching articles thereto and it is necessary at times to provide the reinforcing wooden block to properly enable articles such as switch and outlet boxes to be securely attached thereto. It is therefore an object of my invention to provide a fastening device adapted to be fitted at the edge of an opening within the wall board to serve as a rigid supporting means for articles of this character.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a fastening device of this character of as a reinforcing means for the edge of said opemng to prevent tearing thereof.
simple and cheap construction, embodying means for embracing the edge of the opening in the board, which may be easily and quickly secured in position and which further serves Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following detailed description when viewed together with the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts through and in which Figure 1 is a view in front elevation showing my outlet box fastener in attached position to a section of a wall,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough, 1 Figure 3 is a sideview of the fastening,
. Figure 4 is a bottom plan view,
Figure 5 is a plan view showing the fastening used for attaching an overhead fixture,
and a Figure 6 is a perspective view of the fasteni ng device used in Figure 5.
. Referring now to the drawing I hzwe shown my invention adapted for use in connection with an outlet box 5 adapted to be inserted through an opening formed in a wall 6 of a building, said wall in the present instance being shown as formed of walllmard as clearly showi'ibyFigureQnfthedrawihg. Myinvenfl 192% "serial No. 195,715.
tion comprises a fastening device for the box comprising a substantially U-shaped clip indicated generally at 7 arranged to be inserted over'the edge of the opening formed in the board with one of the arms 8 thereof engaging one side of the board and the opposite arm t) engaging the oppositeside thereof. Open- 1ngs'10 are formed-in the arm 8 whereby to secure the sameto the board by means of screws or the like. The base 11 of the fastener is arranged in abutting relation to the sides t of the outlet box and an opening 12 is formed therein in alinement with a-similar opening in the wall of the box whereby to permit a screw 13 to be inserted therethrough so as to secure the parts together. An ofiset indicated at 14 may be formed between the connection of the arm 9 and the ba'se 11 permitting the opening 12'to be set inwardly from the outer face of the wall toaccommodate certain types of boxes which are not arranged to be fitted V flush with the wall.
Intermediate the ends of the clip is arranged a cut-out portion indicated at 15 which extends substantially through each arm 8 and 9 and entirely across the base section 11. The cut out portion 15 is adapted to receive ears 16 usually provided along the edge of the outlet box-By constructing a clip in the manner described above the ends thereof are connected together by a narrow strip 17 and such ends may be separated so as to form a pair of relatively smaller clips as shown by Figure 6 of the drawing. Aflconvenient method of separating the clips may be pro vided by cutting a; shallow recess indicated at 18' along one face of the strip 17 and in this manner the clips may readily be broken apart.
The individual clips thus formed indicated at 19' may be used to engage the edge of an opening formed inthe ceiling board 20, a sufiicient number of such clips being provided to form the fastening means for the arms 21 ofa ceiling fixture 22. By employing fastening clips for attaching outlet boxes embodying the features comprising my invention it is 'obvious'that the same will besecured in arigid and permanent manner without danger of splitting or tearing the edges of the wallboard. v It is obvious the invention lasimaeptihle of various changes and modifications W thout departing from the spirit thereof or the pe oi the appended claim and I accordingly claim all such forms of the device to which I am entitled.
I claim: A Wall fastening tor outlet boxes colnprlsing a channel shaped member having a perfo- ANTON WIEBMER.
