n. P. STANTON.
PIPE-WRENCH. No. 170,201, Patented Nov. 23, 1875.
wihupsses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL P.- STANTON, OF GENTREVILLE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlPE-WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,201, dated November 23, 1875 application filed September 23, 1875.
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL P. STANTON, of Oentreville, in the county of Kent and State of Rhode island, have invented certain Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists of a lever with a square angular hook at one end, and a strap sliding on it, in which is secured a serrated block, the teeth of which fit into a rack on the inside of the lever. A smaller lever, pivoted in the upper part of the strap, has its short end directed toward the angle in the main lever. I
Figure 1 shows a side view of the wrench. Fig. 2 is the same with a part of the strap removed.
The lever A is made with one end bent up at-about forty-five degrees, then with a return bend of the same angle to the back of the wrench, forming a square book. A rack, a, is out on the inside of this lever, extending from the hook back three or four'inohes. A sliding strap, 0, incloses the lever, and has a block, b, securedto the middle of it, with teeth out in it corresponding with the teeth of the rack a, and a thumb-screw, d, in the back of the strap draws the block and lever together by pressing on the back of the lever, or on a gib, i, inserted in the strap. D is a smaller lever, held in the upper part of the strap by the pivot s. The end of this lever extending toward the hook on lever A is cut away to an obtuse angle, so as to catch, but not out too deep into, the pipe; The other end of the lever is tapered away and curved down toward the handle of lever A. The pivot s has a square head, and a square hole, 0, is made in the end of the lever A, to fit on it, so that when it is necessary to remove the small lever to grind the end of it, the lever A may be slid out of the strap, and the square hole in it used as a wrench to turn the pivot out with. i
In'using the wrench, the thumb-screw d is first loosened, and the strap 0 slid back the lever A is then hooked onto the pipe j, and the strap slid up toward it until the point of the lever D touches the pipe, as seen in the drawing. The thumb-screw is then tightened, and a slight pressure on the curved end of the lever D will cause the point of it to catch in the pipe, and force being applied to the lever A,
the point will continue to take more hold of the pipe until it is sufficient to turn it.
The length of the rack enables the wrench to turn both small and large pipe, by setting the strap toward or from the hook, and the rack-teeth prevent the strap from slipping when the thumb-screw is screwed up. A wedge may be used in place of the thumbscrew and gib.
Having thus described my improvements,
what I claimas my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination Of the levers D and A, the
latter being hooked and provided with the teeth a, with the strap 0, serrated block b, and thumb-screw d,substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
