FOLDING STOOL.
Application filed February 16, 1928.` SeriaI No. 254,837.
The present invention relates to improvements in folding stools and has for its principal object to provide a stool that can bereadily and easily setup in position for use whenever necessary, the same being equally as well folded into compact" form when not inuse, thus enabling the stool to be stored away in any desirable place without occupying much space.
A further object of the invention is to provide a folding stool which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the folding stool embodying my invention showing the same in its assembled position.
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a side elevation showing the stool in its folded position.
Figure 4 is an edge elevation of the folded stool.
Figure 5 is an enlarged longitudinal siectional View through one of the hubs showing one pair of the arms and legs in an eX- tended position, the other pair being shown in their folded posit-ion, and v Figure 6 is a detail sectional View showing the manner in which one corner of the seat is secured to the upper end of the adjacent arm. In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1Y designates generally my improved folding stool, the same comprising a pair of hub members designated generally by the numerals 2 and 3, respectively,
Each of these hub members includes a pair of spaced rectangular shaped plates 4 and 5 between which is secured at the intermediate portion thereof a wooden filler block 6, and as is more clearly shown in Figure 5, the upper edges of this block are beveled as illustrated at 7. This block is rigidly secured between the plates of each of the hub members and is disposed directly below the upper edges of the plates.
A pair of transversely extending pivots 8 10 and 11 is associated with each of the hub members and the upper end of each of the leg members has secured on the opposite sides thereof the metallic plates 12 and portions of these plates project beyond ther upper eX- tr-emities of the leg members for pivotal engagement with the respective pivots 8 and 9 as is clearly illustrated in Figure 5 whereby said leg members are adapted for vertical swinging movement. A pair of seat supporting arms designated by the numerals 13 and 14 respectively is also associated witheach of the hub members and the lower ene of each of the seat supporting arms has secured on the opposite side faces thereof the metallic plates 15 similar to the plates 12 for engagement with the respective pivot pins whereby said arms are also adapted for vertical swinging movement. The manner in which the pivoted legs and seat supporting arms function will be presently described.
The upper end of each arm is bifurcated as illustrated at 16 and secured on the outer side face of the bifurcated upper end of each arm is the metallic plate 17 that is formed with a longitudinal slot 18 as more clearly disclosed in Figure 6. y
The canvas seat 19 is formed at its respective ends with the roller receiving loops 2O,v
the roller being designated by the numerals 14. The heads 23 will engage with the me` tallic plates 17 of one pair of the arms, while thumb nuts 24 are threaded on the threaded lextremities 25 of the rods and engage the metallic plates arranged on the upper bifurcated ends of the other pair of arms for positively securing the seat 13 on the upper ends of the arms when the stool is assembled for use. Of course when not in use, the seat is removed from engagement with the upper bifurcated ends of the arms and then the seat Cil may be rolled up and stored away in a relatively small space.
For the purpose of holding the hubs 2 and 3 in proper spaced relation, l provide the complementary brace bars 2G and 27, respec tively, the same being` pivotally connected together at their inner opposed ends. rllhe outer ends of these brace bars are pivotally connected to suitable bracket-s that extend laterally from the outer face ot the innermost plate 5 ot each hub member, and Ytor the purpose of limiting the swinging nioven'icntot these brace bars in one direction, there is formed in the bar 2T a notch 28 with weich cooperates the laterally extending lug 29 carried by the brace lbar 26 as clearly shown in Figure l. Thus when the brace bars are disposed in horizontal alinement, the hub members 2 and 3 are spaced with respect to eachother so that theseat 13 may be properly attached to the upper ends ot the arms 13 and lli, and for the purpose oi maintaining the seat supporting` arms in. their proper position, 'there is provided additional braces 30 and 3l that are pivotailj-,f connected together at their inner opposed ends, the outer ends of the braces 80 and 3l. being pivotally secured to the intermediate portions of the arms and the adjacent leg members as clearly shown in Figure 2. rll`hese braces are also Jormed with complementary means to limit the swinging movement oi the same in one direction similar to the lug and notch associated with the spacing members for the hubs.
Similar braces 32 and 33 are associated with each pair of leg members whereby when said brace members 32 and 33 are disposed in horizontal alinement with each other, the legs will be disposed in diverging relation, and will be properly supported against inward swinging movement.
Vllhen the parts are assembled in position so that the stool l may be occupied, it will bev observed that that the 'tree lower corners of the arms will engage with the respective' beveled Yfaces 7 of the filler blocks 6 in each oii the hub members and the various braces stored away in any convenient place without protrae/i occupying any considerable amount of space.
A folding stool of the above mentioned character can be carried in an automobile and used whenever necessary and can also be easily and readily set up for use lwithout the necessity of having to employ any tools or the like. Furthermore a folding stool oif this character will be strong and durable, and ye very inexpensive. Y
llllhile lf have shown the preferred embodiment ot my invention, it is to be imderstood that various changes in the size, shape and arraiigement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and 'the scope et the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y l. A folding stool comprising a pair ot hubs, each hub including a pair ot spaced plates, a tiller block arranged between each pair of spaced plates, means for holding the hubs in spaced relation, a pair ot legs pivoted at their upper ends between the spaced plates each hub on opposite sides of the iiller block, a pair oit seat supporting arms pivoted at their lower ends between the spaced plates ot each hub, the pivoted ends ot the arms adapted to engage the filler block for limiting the swinging movement of the arms in one direction, bracing means between the legs and the arms for maintaining the same in an operative position, and a seat supported on the upper ends of the arms. f

A folding stool comprising a pair oic hub members, each including a pair oi spaced plates, a iiller block arranged between each pair oi? spaced plates, transverse pivot pins extending between the plates on opposite sides of the tiller block, means for holding the hub members in spaced relation, pairs ot legs, plates secured on opposite sides oit the upper end o't' each leg, andbeing operatively connected to the respective transverse pivot pins whereby said legs are capable ot` vertical swinging movement between the plates of the respective hub members, a lpair of vertically swinging seat supporting arms -for disposition between the first mentioned plates of each hub member, plates secured on' the opposite sides ot the lower endsot the arm members tor respective connection with the transverse pivot pins, the pivoted ends oi. the arms adapted to engage the lille-1 block for limiting the swinging movement ot the arms in one direction, bracing means between the legs and the arms for inaintaining the same in an operative position` and a seat supported on the upper ends of thel arms.
