The present invention relates topaint and lacquer shields, and more particularly to such devices adaptedV to shield automobile window panes during the process of paintlacquering or otherwise linishing the automobile. Y l
The object of the invention is to provide such a shield which is very eflicient in use and which may be speedily and easily applied to and removed from the window pane; and further, to provide such a device simply and strongly constructed of a minimum numbei' of parts; and further, to provide such a shield adapted to fit automobile windows of any size.
These objects are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structure or device hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the device longitudinally or horizontally contracted;
Figure 2 is a sectional view thereof taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the device (taken on the same line) and of the automobiles Wall or window casing in which the window pane is mounted, this view showing a modified construction;
Figure l is a rear elevational view of the same, showing in dotted line the device longitudinally or horizontally expanded;
Figures 5, 6 and 7 illustrate the three successive stages of the application of the device in operative position to the Window of an automobile (shown fragmentarily).
In these drawings is shown a paint and lacquer shield comprising an outer plate member 1, on which is mounted in longitudinally or horizontally slidable relation, an inner plate member 2. Y
The outer plate member designated generally 1 is constructed of an integral sheet of metal bent to form a front portion 3, a bight portion il, a rear portion 5 of less vertical and horizontal dimensions than the front portion 3, and a cross-sectionally L- shaped iiange 6 or hook portion extending 1930. rearwardly and downwardly from the upper edge of the rear porton 5 and being hooked over the upper edge ofthe window pane 12 serves to support the device in operative position. A handle 7 is secured as by spot-welding to the front surface of the front portion 3, and is spaced slightly inwardly from the left hand edge of this portion, as seen in Figure 1.
The inner plate memberdesignated generally 2 is a flat sheet lof metal and is adapted to seat between the front and rear portions 3 and 5 of said outer plate member. A crosssectionally Z-shaped angle-iron 9 is secured as by spot-welding indicated at 10 to the rear surface of the inner plate member 2 and is adapted to nest with and longitudinally slidably bear on the L-shaped flange 6 of the plate member 1. This Z-shaped angle-iron 9 is so situated that when said flanges are in nesting relation (as seen in Figure 3y the top edge of plate 2 is approximate y at the level of the top edge of the front portion 3 of the plate member 1. The inner plate member 2 is also provided with a handle 11 Y secured as by spot-welding to its front surface and spaced slightly inwardly from its right hand edge as in Figure 1.
Figures 5, 6 and 7 illustrate how the device is applied in shielding relation to the window pane 12 of an automobile. v
Figure 5 shows the window pane 12 par-` tially lowered. The shield is mounted on this pane by means of the L-shaped flange 6, which is hooked over the top edge of said pane to support the device thereby, the shield extending on the outer side of the pane and downwardly into the recess 14 in which the pane guidedly moves vertically.
vIn Figure 6, the window pane has been raised so that the top edge of the shield seats Within the top portion of said recess 14.
In Figure 7 the shield has been longitudinally or horizontally expanded so that the outside vertical edges of the plate members 1 and 2 respectively abut against the sides of the recess 14.
In the preferable embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, the outside corners of the plate members 1 and 2 are rounded as shown to conform with the contour of the corners of the recess l-l.
It will be seen that the shield Completely covers the window pane, extending upwardly tar above its upper edge, downwardly into the guiding recess in which the pane slides vertically, and also extending horizontally or laterally the extreme width of the pane and into contact with the vertical sides of said recess; so that the pane cannot receive drops or splashes ot the paint, varnish, lacquer or other coati. with which the automobile is being covered or tinshed.

l. 1n a device ot the class described: a plate member' having Jfront and rear portions connected at the bottom to form a bight, one ot said portions being provided at an intermediate point between the top and bottom ot' the plate member with an outwardly and downwardly extending tiange to lit the upper edge of a window pane when the same is partly open; a second plate member seated in the bight between said front and rear portions and having an outwardly and downwardly extending flange located at an intermediate point between the top and bottom of the second plate member and adapted to nest in horizontal slidable relation with the flange on the first-mentioned plate member.

In a device of: the. class described: a plate member having front and rear portions connected at the bottom to form a bight, said rear portion being provided at its upper edge with a. rearwardly and downwardly extending llange located at an intermediate point between the top and bottom of the said plate member and adapted to lit the upper edge ot a window pane when the same is partly open', a second plate member seated in the bight between said front and rear portionsand having a rearwardly and downwardly extending` flange located at an intermediate point between the top and bottom of the second plate member and adapted to nest in horizontal slidable relation with the iange on the rear portion of said plate member.
A device oit the class described comprising in combination with a window pane: a plate member having front and rear portions connected at the bottom to form a bi ght, said rear portion being provided at its upper edge with a rearwardly and downwardly extending flange located at an intermediate point between the top and bottom of the said plate member and adapted to receive the upper edge of said pane when the same is partly open; a second plate member seated in the bight between said front and rear portions and having at an intermediate point between the top and bottom of the second plate member a rearwardly and downwardly extending iiange adapted to nest in horizontal slidable relation with the flange on the rear portion of the inst-mentioned plate member.
4. A device ot' the class described comprising in combination with a window pane having a vertical movement within a recess: a plate member having front and rear portions connected at the bottom to form a bight; a second plate member seated in horizontally slidable relation in the bight between said front and rear portions, the front and rear portions of the irst-mentioned plate member combined with the second-mentioned plate member being suiiciently thin to slidably fit within said recess adjacent said pane; and means located at an intermediate point between the top and bottom ot the plate members whereby said plate members may be suspended from the upper edge ot said pane.
