Another object of the inventionis to provide means for rotating vthe saws step by step so that the files can come in contact with each tooth of a saw.
This invention also consists in certain 'other featuresof construction and in the combination and arrangement ofthe several pa.rts,to be hereinafter fully described, illustratedin the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appendedclaims.

An arm A is adjustably connected with the bottom ofthe opposite end ofthe base, this arm being composed ofthe two parts 9 which havetheir inner ends bent to form the yokeshaped part 10, the limbs of which are slidably supported on the under face ofthe base by the brackets 11. v
A lever 12, pivoted at 13 to the under face ofthe base, has a pin and slot connection, shown generally at 14, ,withan ear 15v on one of the parts 9 so that by` shifting this lever, the arm can be moved forwardly or rear wardly, as desired.- A clamp 16 engages portions of the parts 9 and a screw bolt 17 passes through the base and through said clamp so that by tightening this screw bolt, the clamp can be causedto grip the armand thus hold it in adjusted position. The arm curves upwardly beyond the endof the base and'has an uprightpartA at its outer extremity. At the upper end of this upright part, the two parts 9 are fastened together and 'these'rparts 9 form a space for receiving a saw. One of the parts 9 is .provided with acurved depending part 9 which carries an adjustableshoe 18 at its lower end for engaging one of the spacers 19 of the saw assembly.
A yoke 2O i-s slidably arranged on the upright part vA through means of the bolt 21 which passes through the upright partand through slots 22 in the limbs ofthe yokeV and this yoke can be adjusted vertically by means of the set screw 23 passing through a threaded hole inthe bight of the yoke, with its lower end rotatably connected with the upper end of the upright. The lower ends of the limbs of the yoke are offset and a shoe 211 is pivoted carries a pair of uprights 70, an upright on each bar engaging a file carrying rod of each set and these uprights are so formed that they tend to hold the file carrying rods in the forked ends of the forked bars 61. A step 7l on one edge of the base limits movementin one direction of one of the bars 69 and a lever 72 is pivoted to a right angle extension at the opposite end of the other bar, said lever engaging an upright on the first bar when the lever is swung outwardly so as to move the bars in oppositedirections and thus cause the uprights 70 to move the file carrying rods of each set in opposite directions so as to move the [iles of each set away from each other. This will free the files from the saw. llilhen the lever 72 is swung inwardly, the uprights 70 will move away from the file carrying rods of each set so that the spring actuated forked m'embers 61 will press the ille carrying rods away from each other and thus cause the files to be pressed against the saw, and these spring actuated forked members impart movement to the upright carrying bars 69 when the lever is swung inwarP ly. As will be seen from Figure 1, the arms 52, the forked members 6l and the uprights 70 hold the file carrying rods of each set in a forwardly convergent position with the files crossing` each other diagonally with the saw between them. Vhen the files are engaging a saw, the carriers do not engage the uprights as the saw prevents them from doing so. The spring actuated members G1 press the files against the saw.
As before stated, by 'swinging the lever 72 outwardly, the files will be opened or moved away from each other so that they will disengage the saw and thus permit the saw to be moved to the nest tooth. The parts are so arranged that the les will le a tooth square in front and round at the back, which is considered the proper way to sharpen a tooth of a gin saw.
A member 74 is arranged under the base and has an upwardly curved front part'74 which is connected with the forward part of the arm A by al slot and pinv connection shown generally at 7 5, so that the member 74 is inovably supported by the arm A at its forward end, A stationary jaw 70 is'adjustably connected to the member 74 by the bolts 77 passing through the stationary jaw and through the slot 78 in the member 7'4. A movable jaw 79 is pivoted between the ears 8O carried by the stationary jaw. The front end of the movable jaw carries a pointed screw 81 for gripping a sawy blade between itself and the stationary jaw. roller 82 is carried by the shank of each of the jaw members and a lever 83, pivoted at its rear end to a bracket 84, fastened to the under face of the base, has its front end adapted to pass between the two rollers so as to move t-he movable jaw into clamping position.
A pair of links 85 connects the front part of the lever 83 to the front end of a lever 86 rotatably supported intermediate its ends on a shaft 87 rotatably supported on the under side of the base and the rear end of said lever 86 carries a pin 88 for engaginga cam 89 in the gear 41 which is carried by the shaft 86. Thus on each revolution of the gear 4l on the shaft 36, the lever 86 is rocked to move the lever 88 to cause the front end of said lever 83 to pass between the rollers 82 of the jaw members to cause the movable jaw to clamp the blade of the saw passing through the slot in the arm A and as soon as the pin leaves the low part of the cam, the lever 88 is moved out of engagement with the rollers so that the jaws re.- lease the saw.
A second lever 90 is fastened to the shaft 87 intermediate its ends and has a pin 91 atits rear end for engaging the cam 8 9 and the front end of said lever has a slot 92 therein in which slides a block 98 to which the upper ends of a pair of links 94 are connected. An extension of the member 74 passes between the straps and bolts 95 pass through the straps above and below the extension, so that said extension is caused to move with the links when the same are moved vertically by the rocking movement of the lever 90 under the action of the cam 89. This action will cause the member 7 4 to swing on its pivot 7 5 and the upward movement of the member 74 takes place when the jaws are in gripping position so that the saw assembly will be rotated by this upward movement of the member 74 so as to bring another tooth of each of the saws being operated on by the files into position to be engaged by said files. The extent of movement of the member 74 by the lever 90 is adjusted through means of a bar 96 which is connected with the block 92 at its front end and has its rear end adjustably connected to a bracket 97 secured to the under side of the base and having a pin 98 thereon forengaging any one of a plurality of holes 99 in the rear end of the bar 96. The motor is supported by the depending parts 101 from the base and the saw assembly is rotatably supported by the legs 102 having the rollers 108 at their upper ends for enea-ging the shaft of the saw assembly.
After the parts are set up, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 8, and the front of the device connected with the spacers of the saw assembly, with one of the saws passing through the slot in the arm A, the parts are adjusted to cause one set of files to engage the second saw from the saw which passes through the slot in the arm and the other set of files engages the second saw on the opposite side of the saw which passes through the slot. The shaft is then rotated either by the hand or by the motor so that the bars 48 and 49 will be reciprocated to cause the files to iile the teeth of the two saws. Each set of iiles makes two forward movements and two rearward movements on each revolution of the shaft and then the saws are moved one step by the means operated by the cams so as to bring another tooth of the saw in position to be acted on by the Files. The operation continues until all the teeth on the two saws are filed, after which the lever 72 is swung outwardly to open the tiles and then the parts are adjusted on another saw so that the two sets of iiles can lile two other saws.

A saw filing device of the class described comprising a reciprocating member composed of a horizontal lower part and a diagonally arranged upper part, guideways for said parts, means for slidingly connecting the raised rear end of the inclined part with the rear end of the other part, a lateral arm extending in one direction from the lower part, a lateral arm extending in an opposite direction from the upper part, a lile carrier rotatably connected to each arm whereby the carriers have swinging movement toward and away from each other, a iile connected to the forward end of each carrier, said files crossing each other diagonally with the saw between them, and spring means for pressing the carriers away from each other to press the files against the saw.
2. A saw filing device of the class described comprising a reciprocating member composed of a horizontal lower part and a diagonally arranged upper part, guideways for said parts, means for slidingly connecting the raised rear end or" the inclined part with the rear end of the other part, a lateral arm entendi in one direction from the lower part, a lateral arm extending in an opposite direction from the upper part, a file carrier rotatably connected to each arm whereby the carriers have swinging movement toward and away from each other, a tile connected to the forward end of each carrier, spring means for pressing the carriers away from each other, stop means against which the spring means hold the carriers when the saw is not between the files and manually actuated means for moving the stop means apart whereby the spring means will separate the iiles and thus move them away from the saw.

A saw ling device of the class described comprising a reciprocating member composed of upper and lower parts, the lower part being horizontally arranged and the upper part sloping downwardly and forwardly, means for slidably connecting together the rear ends of said parts, a pair of file carriers connected to opposite sides of the member and supported for swinging movement toward and from each other, a tile connected to the forward end of each carrier, said carriers converging forwardly with the files crossing each other diagonally and engaging opposite sides of the saw tooth, means for yieldingly pressing the carriers away from each other to cause the files to be pressed against the tooth, a drive shaft, means for reciprocating the member therefrom, means for moving the saw intermittently to cause the iiles to engage dierent teeth of the saw and means for actuating the saw moving means from said shaft.

A saw iilingdevice of the class described comprising a reciprocatng member composed of upper and lower parts, the lower part being horizontally arranged and the upper part sloping downwardly and fol'- wardly, means for slidably connecting together the rear ends of said parts, a pair of 'orwardly converging file carriers connected to opposite sides of the member and supported for swingingr movement toward and from each other, a iile connected to the forward end of each carrier, the files crossing each other diagonally and engaging opposite sides of the saw tooth, means for yieldinfrly pressing the carriers away from each other to cause the files to be pressed against the tooth, a drive shaft, means for reciprocating the member therefrom, means for moving the saw intermittently to cause the files to engage different teeth of the saw, means for actuating the saw moving means from said shaft, means for adjusting the tension of the yieldable means and means for adjusting the saw moving means to move the saw any desired distance.

A device for filing saws of cotton gins and the like, comprising a base, an arm adj ustably connected with the lower part of the base and having a curved forward end slotted to receive one of the saws of the assembly, adjustable clamping means carried by the arm for engaging spacers of the assembly, a pair of reciprocating members on the base, a pair of forwardly converging lile carriers connected to opposite sides of each member and supported for swinging movement toward and from each other, a file connected to the forward end of each carrier, the tiles of each pair of carriers crossing each other diagonally and engaging opposite sides of a saw tooth, means for yieldingly pressing the carriers of each pair away from each other to cause the iiles to be pressed against the tooth, the files of one set engaging a saw on one side of the arm and the files of the other set engaging the saw on the opposite side of the arm, means for moving the saw assembly intermittently to bring other teeth into position to be engaged by the files and means for actuating the reciprocating members. v

A device for filing saws of cotto-n gins andthe like, comprising a base, an arm adjustably connected with the lcwer part of the base and having a curved forward end slotted to receive one of the saws of the assembly, adjustable clamping means carried by the arm for engaging spacers of the assembly, a pair of reciprocating members on the base, a pair of forwardly converging file carriers connected to opposite sides of each member and supported for swinging movement toward and from each other, a file connected to the forward end of each carrier, the files of each pair of carriers crossing each other diagonally and engaging opposite sides of a saw tooth, means for yieldingly pressing the carriers of each pair away from each other to cause the files to be pressed against the tooth, the files of one set engaging a saw on one side of the arm and the files of the other set engaging a saw on the opposite side of the arm, means for moving the saw assembly intermittently to bring other teeth into position to be engaged by the files, a drive shaft supported by the base, a crank shaft driven therefrom, connecting rods connecting the cranks of the shaft with the reciprocating members and means for Operating the saw feeding means from the drive y shaft.

A device for filing saws of cotton gins and the like, comprising a base, an arm adjustably connected with the lower part of the base and having a curved forward end slotted to receive one of the saws of the assembly, adjustable clamping means carried by the arm for engaging spacers of the assembly, a pair of forwardly converging file carriers connected to opposite sides of each member and supported for swinging movement toward and from each other, a file connected to the forward end of each carrier, the files of each pair of carriers crossing each other diag-onally and engaging opposite sides ofv a saw tooth, means for yieldingly pressing the carriers of each pair away from each other to cause the files to be pressed against the tooth, the files of one set engaging a saw on one side of the arm and the files of the other set engaging a saw on the opposite side of the arm, means for moving the saw assembly intermittently to bring other teeth into position to be engaged by the files, a drive shaft supported by the base, a crank shaft driven therefrom, connecting rods connecting the cranks of the shaft with the reciprocating members, means for operating the saw feeding vmeans from! the drive shaft, such means 'consisting of cam means 'on the drive shaft, a pair.oflevers operated by the cam meansfsawclamping means operated by 'one of the levers and means for moving the clamping means when the-same are inv clamping position by vthe y other lever.

A device for filing saws of vcotton gins and the`like,comprising a base, an arm adjustably connectediwith the lower part ofthe baseand having a curved forward end slotted to receiveon'e Vof the saws ofthe assemb1y,'ad justable clamping means carried by the arm for engaging spacers ofthe-assembly, a pair of reciprocating members onthe base, a pair of forwardly'convergingle carriers connected to opposite sides of each member and supported for swinging movement toward and from each other, a file connected to the forward end of each carrier, the files of each pair of carriers crossing each other diagonally and engaging opposite sides of a saw tooth, means for yieldingly pressing the carriers of each pair away from each other to cause the files to be pressed against the tooth, the iles of one set engaging a saw on one side of the arm and the files of the other set engaging the saw on the opposite side of the arm, means for moving the saw assembly intermittently to bring other teeth into position to be engaged by the files, a drive shaft supported by the base, a crank shaft driven therefrom, connecting rods connecting the cranks of the shaft with the reciprocating members, means for operating the saw feeding means from the drive shaft, such means consisting of cam means on the drive shaft, a pair of levers operated by the cam means, saw clamping means operated by one of the levers, means for moving the clamping means when the same are in clamping position by the other lever and means for adjusting the saw moving means whereby the saw can be moved cert-ain desired distances.

A saw ling device of the class described comprising a base, a clamping arm slidably connected with the base, a lever for shifting the arm, means for holding the arm in adjusted position, adjustable clamping parts carried by the arm, a second arm pivotally connected at its forward end to the first arm, stationary and movable clamping members carried by the second arm for clamping a saw, a lever for moving the movable clamping member to open and closed position, a cam operated lever for moving the first lever, a second cam operated lever for moving the second arm to causethe clamping means to move the saw and cam means for actuating the cam operated levers and saw filing means carried by the base.
10. A saw filing device of the class described comprising a base, a clamping arm slidably connected with the base, a lever for shifting the arm, means for holding the arm in adjusted position, adjustable clamping parts carried by the arm, a second arm pivotally connected at its forward end to the first arm, stationary and movable clamping members carried by the second a-rm for clamping a saw, a lever for moving the movable clamping member to open and closed position, a cam operated lever for moving the first lever, a second cam operated lever for moving the second arm to cause the clamping means to move the saw, cam means for actuating the cam operated levers, saw iling means carried by the base and a single drive shaft for operating the cam means andthe filing means.
