:BELT END ATTACHMENT Original application led April 14, 1930, SerialrNb. 343,160. yDividedr and ch-is 1930. Serial No-..46f'f,320..
The. present invention. relates to. strap or belt endrenforcernents` and is a divisional application from my allowed application, Serial No.. 343,160 allowed April 14, 1930. 5. Inmy all-owedA application4 herein referred 'to an improved adjustable fastener for belts is disclosed. whereinl the appearance of the belt isimprovedr thru conceal-ing the free end. of the belt and also the butt end reinm, forcement. It is thev primary object of the` present invention to provide an improved reinforcement^- for the butt ends of belts. which` will dispen-se with riveting, stapling or other fasl telling; elements for attachment ofthe reinforcing head. piece.
A further object: of the invention is to providea reinforcing head piece or cap for butt endsof belts whichmaybe economically conm structed from sheet metal stampings andy of a i construction to permit detachable coupling of a belt buckle in an efficient manner to the butt end of the belt.
@ther objects. and. advantages of the invention will; be apparent during the course of the following detailed description, taken in,
connection with the accompanying, drawing forming a part. of this specification and` in which drawing Figure 1 is a central longitudinal. section 'thru the connected. ends of aV belt-provided with the` improved reinforcing head piece.
Figure @Lis a frontI planviewshowing portions of the buckle and belt broken away for nmore clearly illustrating the manner of attaching the head piece to the` beltV end..
Figure 3- is a plan view ofthe blank from which. the reinforcing head` piece or cap may be formed.
Referring to the drawing in. detail, and `wherein. similar reference characters designate corresponding partsthruout the several views, the letter AL designates aL flexible belt formedof leather or any other suitable `ina.-
50 5,` the head piece being applied tothe butt terial having its ends adjustably connected,
applica-tin inea. .rui-y r1,
end 4' for detachably receiving the bucklfeBAk l adjustably receiving the.` free end` 5'..
The buckle B includes the arcuatedface'plate and" a4 clamp plate 7 eX- tending in overlying. relation at the inner side ofthe face plate and having its-reduced end portion 8` bent substantially at a right belt end 5 as. will be observed extends at the inner side ofthe butt end- 4 and is concealedl thereby.4
Referring now tothe reinforcing headVV piece oricap C forv clamping engagement over the butt end". 4 ofthe belt in` aA manner to be entirely concealed from view bythe buckle face plate 6', the` same is preferably formed from a sheet metal stamping shown in blank forni'inFigure. K l
' The sheet metal headv piece C is' bent along the lines 14 and 15 shown'in Figure' 3" to provide parallelspaced'apart inner andlouter plates 16' and 18 respectively connected' by the-end plate 19.1" 'These pilates 16,Y 18. and 19' forno a channelisha'pedcap, adapted to be clamped over therterininalof the butt belt end 4- with the plates 16- and 18-resp'ectivel`y overlying the inner and outerV surfaces of the belt end.. The outer plate '18' is relatively narrow and is intended'to overlie but a. small portion off the outer surface ofthe belt; from.` the end' edge'foffthe butt end 4. TheA inner plate 16' is of `considerably greater length than the outer yplate 1'8" and' extends for a substantial distance over the inner surface of; the belt. Y
The butt end of the belt is provided with a transverse slot QO-which extends parallel to the endedge of the buttend with its ends spaced an even distance from the upper and. lower edges of the' belt. This slot 2`0Qforms an opening for receiving the'buckl'eltongue` 1'()y whereby the buckle may bedetachably longitudinally .i
coupled to the butt end of the belt with the butt end overlying the inner surface of the buckle face plate 6 and the slot fully closed at its outer side by the face plate. l
Formed along thefree side edge of the outer plate 18'is an elongated, rectangular# shaped tongue 22 of a length equal tothe length of the slot 20 and ofa width substantially equal to one-half the thicknessuof the belt. This tongue 22 is intended to be bent inwardly into the slot 2O over the .forward edge of the slot.
The inner plate 16- has struck from its intermediate portion an elongated rectangular-shaped tongue 24 of a length equal to the length of the slot 20 and of a width substantially equal to one-half the thickness of the belt. This inner plate tongue 24 is spaced an equal distance from the bending line 14 as the spacing of the outer platetongue 22 from the bendingline 15 and is intended to be bent outwardly into the slot 20 over the forward edge of the slot with its end edge abutting with the end edge of the tongue 22 as clearly shown in Figur-e 1. Thus it will be seen that the tongues' 22 and 24V aside' from clamping the channeled portion of the head piece to the belt end also provide a metal reinforcing plate along the forward edge of the slot 20 against which the buckle tongue 10 pulls'. Y v
Projecting from the upper and lower marginal portions of the inner plate 16, rearwardly of the tongue 24 are attaching eX- tensions or prongs 80 which are preferably of triangular or pointed shape as shown and these prongs 30 are intended to be bent into spaced overlying relation at the outer side of the plate 16 for biting into the belt along its upper and lower edges substantially midway between the inner and outer surfaces of the belt at a location inwardly of the Vslot 20. It may here be well to state that the head piece yC is of a height equal to the width of the belt so that itsupperand lower -edges extend flush with the upper andlower edges of the belt. Thus the prongs 30 serve to anchor the rear end portion of the inner plate firmly to the belt at a location spaced inwardly of the slot 2O and relieve strain upon the belt material beyond the slot. The reinforcing head piece or cap() forms a metallic shield over the terminal of the butt Iend 4 and so reinforcesthebuttend of the belt` as to prevent likelihood of the tongue 1() severing a portion of the belt beyond the slot20.
Thus it will be seen that the head piece is firmly attached in a reinforcing relation to the butt end of the belt in a concealed position and without requiring fastening elements such as rivets, staples or the like.y It is to be understood thatany s uitabley number of the attaching extensions or prongs 30 may beprovided alongthe upper and lower yedges. of the inner plate '16 for biting engagement Awith the upper and lower edges of the belt material.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that a novel belt end reinforcing head piece or cap has been disclosed which may be applied in a concealed reinforcing relation to the butt end of a belt or other similar strap.
