OF NEE-NAB, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOB T0 PAPER PATENTS COH- WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN PACKAGING FOB SHEET MATERIAL Application filed January 11, 1929. Serial 110. 881,860.
This invention relates to an im rovement in packaging for sheet material an more particularly to packaging for folded sheets of crepe paper or other li e product.
The principal object of the invention is to provide packaging for sheets of the nature above described whereby the sheets will be conveniently withdrawable one by one from the package and whereby sheets remaining in the package will be effectively protected from dirt or dust and thereby maintained clean and usable for an almost indefinite length of time.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood by reference to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated a package embodying one form of my invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective of the package before it is opened to permit withdrawal of the contained sheets of material.
Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the package 0 ened to facilitate withdrawal of the contained sheets.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the blank which is folded to form the box or carton, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective illustrating the manner of folding the blank to form the box one side wall being left unfolded to permit fiiling of the box.
Referrin now to the drawings, my improved pac age includes a paper board box or carton 10 formed of a blank such as shown in Fig. 4. The box blank is divided into wide wall portions 11 and 12 narrow wall portions 13, 14 and 15, and wail portions 16 and 17 and flaps 1s, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23. One of the wide wall portions 11 and 12, preferably the wall ortion 12 from which the end walls 16 and 1 project, is provided with spaced p lines of scoring 24 and 25. These lines of scoring are disposed intermediate the longitudinal edges of the wall portion and preferably so as to provide a narrow strip portion 26 approximately midway between the said side ed es. The lines of scoring 24 and 25 are pre erably continued into the end walls 16 and 17, as indicated at 27 and 28, and there joined so as to provide tab- like portions 29 and 30.
The blank of Fig. 4 is initially folded in the manner indicated in Fig. 5 so that the wide wall portion 12 serves as the bottom of the box and the wall portion 11 serves as the openable top of the box.
The box may now be filled with the desired material, which in the present instance consists of a plurality of folded and interfolded sheets of crepe paper and also a folded information sheet which may be an advertising circular or an instruction sheet for containing information as to the roper method of using the contents of the box or any other information.
As shown in Fig. 3, the sheets of crepe paper, indicated at 31, are folded into zigzag form, preferably to form three folds, each of which is approximately equal to the full inside width of the box. The adjacent sheets 31 are also interfolded by having their lowermost fold (as shown in Fig. 3) disposed between the upper and intermediate folds of the next lower sheet. A folded instruction sheet 32 is disposed on top of the pile of interfolded sheets 31 and is interfolded with the uppermost sheet 31 by having its lowermost fold disposed between the top and intermediate folds of the said-top sheet 31. The top fold of the instruction sheet preferably terminates as shown in Fig. 3 with a marginal portion 33 disposed in the area of the narrow strip 26 so that when the said narrow strip is removed, the marginal portion 33 of the information sheet is accessible through the resulting slot and may be withdrawn therethrough.
When the interfolded crepe paper sheets 31 and information sheet 32 are inserted into the box in the above described manner, the flap arts 20 and 21 are folded inwardly and the wall parts 11 and 13 folded over, the part 13 being inserted inside of the wall part 15 as indicated in Fig. 3. The box may be sealed in this position by gluing the parts 13 and 15 together, but I prefer to effect such sealing by means of a seal or sticker 34 which laps over the wall portion 15 and wall portion 11.
When the box is so sealed, it constitutes a substantially dirt and dust proof container which serves to keep the contents clean and saleable.
When the box is to be opened, the narrow strip portion 26 is torn out along the lines of scoring 24 and 25, such tearing out of the strip being facilitated by the provision of the above described tab- like portions 29 and 30. These tab-like portions are adapted to be easily broken from the respective end walls along the lines of scoring 27 and 28 by merely pinching the tab portions inwardly and upwardly towards the inside of the adjacent end portion of the narrow strip 26. This means affords a convenient grip on the ends of the strip 26 so that the same may be readily torn out of the inside wall portion 12, thereby to provide a relatively narrow slot 35 in the said wall portion, extending from end to end of the box and downwardly into each of the end walls. The end wall slot portions facilitate lifting of the marginal portion 33 of the instruction sheet so that the same may readily be withdrawn from the carton, and thereby, as an incident to its folded relation with the adjacent sheet of crepe paper, pulling a marginal portion (indicated at 36 in Fig. 2) of such sheet out of the box through the slot so that the said sheet of crepe paper may readily be Withdrawn vwhen desired.-
In the arrangement herein shown, the exposed portion 36 of the crepe paper sheet constitutes only about one-sixth of the entire area of the sheet so that the major por tion of the sheet remains inside of the box and is thereby kept clean and in condition for use when desired.
By locating the narrow strip portion 26 approximately midway between the edges of the wall portion 12, withdrawal of the sheets of material from the box is facilitated since frictional resistance to the withdrawal of the sheets is restricted at all times to the area of the sheet portion on either side of the slot 35, since such parts of the sheet are removed or pulled out of the box by relatively independent movements with respect to the wall parts on opposite sides of the slot 35.
I am aware that changes may be made in the arrangement of sheets in the box and also in the construction of the box without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which should therefore be determined by reference to the following claims, the same being construed as broadly as possible consistent with the state of the art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A box having a side wall and an end wall, a pair of spaced, substantially parallel lines of scoring on said side wall, extending longitudinally the'reofand defining a narrow strip adapted to be torn out of said side wall to provide a slot therein, said lines of slot so as to facilitate scoring extending into said end wall and being there joined so as to provide a tab por tion adapted to be pinched inwardly towards the inside of the adjacent part of said side wall strip portion, thereby affording a grip on said strip to facilitate the tearing out thereof.
2. In a package of the class described, the combination of a relatively long, wide and shallow box having one of its wide walls pro vided with a pair of spaced, weakened tear lines, extending longitudinally, intermediate its side edges, from end to end of the box, said weakened lines extending at one end into the adjacent end wall and being directed towards each other in said end wall to form a tab adapted to be broken from the end wall by being forced about the adjacent corner edge of the box as a fulcrum, whereby said tab is adapted to be pinched against the inside of the adjacent end portion of said tear-out strip to facilitate tearing out of said strip, thereby to provide a slot in such wall for per mitting withdrawal the contents of the box.
3. In a sheet material packa e of the class described, the combination 0 a container havin when in condition for use, a slot in one 0 its walls intermediate the side edges thereof for permitting withdrawal from the container of the contained sheet material, and a filler in said box comprising a stack of folded and interfolded articles of sheet material and an independent, folded information sheet, said interfolded articles being folded into substantiallyequal folds, each of approximately the full inside width of the box, and said information sheet having one fold interfolded with the top article and having another fold overlying the top of said stack of articles and having an edge portion disposed in accessible position in the area of said slot so as to facilitate gripping of said information sheet and withdrawal thereof through said slot, and whereby, as an incident to the interfolded relation between said information sheet and said top article, a marginal portion of the latter is pulled outwardly through said withdrawal of said articles of sheet material from the container.
4. In a sheet material package of the class described, the combination of a relatively long, wide, and shallow box having one of its wide walls provided when in condition'for use, with a slot extending longitudinally of the box, approximately midway of its width, for permitting withdrawal from the box of the contained sheet material, and a filler in said box comprising a stack of'folded, and interfolded sheets-of crepe paper and an independent folded information sheet, said interfolded sheets of crepe paper being folded into substantially equal folds, each of approximately the full inside width of the box, and said information sheet having one fold interfolded with the top sheet of crepe paper v and having another fold orerlying the top of said stack and having an edge portion disposed in accessible position in the area of said slot so as to facilitate gripping of said information sheet and withdrawal thereof through said slot, and whereby, as an incident t0 the interfolded relation between said information sheet and said top crepe paper sheet, a narrow marginal portion of the latter is pulled outwardly through the slot, so as to facilitate withdrawal of said top crepe paper sheet, from the box.
