Upon the tubular housing 16 at the outer end thereof, a collar" 37"is mounted to limit outward movement of the sleeve 23 upon this housing. Inward movement thereof is limited by the enlargement 17 In the use of the device, the second arm 38 of the bracket 27 is arranged atthe opposite face of the work W from the drillD. This arm of the bracket is longitudinally slotted and has mounted thereon a work support 39 held in adjusted positions by a clamping screw 40 directed through the slot.
The Work W Which'is punch marked at the point where it'is to be drilled,is placed against the arm 38 with its lower edge above the'support 39. Thedevice is then adjusted to position the drill D in engagement with the punch mark of the work W, to position the handle 13 in an upwardly extending vertical position, and to render the righthand pawl 35 inoperative. The support 39 is then moved into contact with the lower edge of the work, and is secured in such position by its clamping screw 40. The motor is then started to effect the turning of the drill D,
and the casing lO-is then turned first to the left and then to the right by the handle 13 to efl'ect the feeding of the drill to thework. During the turning movement of the casing 10 to the left, the sleeve 23 is held against ro tation in the same direction by the left hand or active pawl 35, with theresult that the tubular housing 16 is moved forwardly and .a feeding impulse'imparted to the drill D.
During the turning of the casing 10 to the right, the friction element 21 causesthe sleeve 23 :to turn with the housing 16, with the ,result that norearward movement is imparted to the drill D and the next movement of the casing to the left will impart a further'advancing or feeding movement-to the drill. The motor turns the drill D to the right and the feeding movement of the drill is accomplished bythe left hand turning movements imparted to the easing 10.' The motor tends to turn the casing 10 to the left, and this force is utilized to assist the operator in feed ing the drill D to'the work 'After the hole 'hasbeen drilled. the left hand pawl 35 is from the work by turning the casing 10 to the work and we accordingly do not limit ourselves to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
