METALLIC BUILDING ELEMENT Filed Aug. 16, 1927 mvsNTola JB/vn H. 230 hwsac/g AT TORN EYS.
Patented Mar. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN A. BOHNSACK, OF CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE E. F. HAUSER- MAN COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO METALLIC BUILDING ELEMENT Application filed August 16, 1927. Serial No. 213,320.
construction is sanitary. and otherwise desirable by the elimination of exposed crevices between a multiplicity of parts. Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds. A
This invention consists of the features hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims; the following description and the annexed drawing setting forth but one illustrative embodiment of the various forms inwhich the principle may be applied.
In said annexed drawing- The single figure shows part of a door constructed in accordance with this invention.
In the form illustrated the vertical portion 1 of the door commonly called the stile is the element to which attention is directed andthis invention relates particularly to the construction of hollow metal framing elements of which stile 1 is an example.
Stile 1 is formed from one continuous piece of sheet metal so as to produce the main bulk of the stile and also integrally therewith the flanges 2, 2 which constitute the moulding,
beading, or trim along the side' of the panel element 3, said moulding 2 being formed to any desired contour to aid in producing a pleasing appearance of the finished product.
function of sealing or weatherproofing said joint.
The continuing surfaces of the sheet metal are bent towards one another at points 5, 5 thereby forming a closure or limit to the panel supporting groove to assist in the proper allocation and holding of panel member 3.
At the line 6, where the edges of the sheet metal meet one another at the bottom of the panel groove, they are welded, seamed or otherwise connected together thus forming a tubular section, strong and durable, and when assembled, not presenting to view any more or less unsightly weld or other method of fastening together and concealing raw edges of metal. 1
Other modes of applying the principle of this invention may be employed instead of that explained, change being made as regards the features herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. A hollow one piece sheet metal framing element having a single longitudinal seam, provided from without, the edges being inturned and abutted to form the same as the base of a groove for receiving the edge of a filler element and being oined by a weld in such groove,
2. A hollow one piece sheet metal framing element with moulding or beading and having a single longitudinal seam, provided from without, the edges being inturned and abutted to form a groove for receiving a filler element, and thence extending in parallelism in the general plane-of the framing element and being united by a weld in such roove.
3. A hollow one piece sheet metal stile having moulding finish an integral part thereof, .and having a single longitudinal seam. provided from without. the edges being inturned and abutted to form a groove for receiving a filler element and being ioined by integral metal at the base of such groove. Signed by me this 13 h day of August. 1927. JOHN A. BQHNSACK.
