N. PETERS. PHOTD-[JTHOGRAPHE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. UNDERWOOD, OF FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO \VILLIAM A. WVHITHEAD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SASH-FASTENERS AND BURGLAR-ALARMS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,629, dated July 4, 1876; application filed May 19, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OSEPH B. UNDERWOOD, of Fayetteville, in the county of Cumberland and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombined SaslrFastener and Burglar-Alarm; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention has for its object the combination of a saslrfastener with a springhammer in such a manner that the fastener may be used to hold the sash up at any desired elevation, and to lock the same securely v when down, so that it cannot be raised from the outside, and tofurther answer for the purpose of a lock and trigger to hold and release thehammer when set, as hereinafter described, to produce an alarm, reference being had to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
In the drawing, A is a plate, made of iron or any other suitable material, provided with flanges T T, turned up on each side, and provided with holes, which receive the pinions or axes of the hammer B, said pinions projectin'g on each side of the hammera sut'licient distance to form an arbor for a spiral spring, the spring being formed on the same by passing a wire over the hammer B, and then coiled around each end of the arbor, terminating and being fastened to the frame-piece A, so as to press the hammer B firmly on the tube or nipple at D. On the lower end of the frame A is pinned an eccentric window-fastener, U, as seen at H, on which pin it is turned to perform its various ot'fices, said fastener being provided with a lever, L, and a catch or pin, Ej. Being thus constructed, it is attached, by
site the lever L, while the sash is down, and
into which it would catch and hold the window-sash down when the fastener is in the position as seen in the drawing. \Vhcn it is desired to use the alarm in combination with the lock, the hammer B is drawn over and adjusted into the catch E in the fastener, the
lever L still remaining in the notch in the molding. A percussion-cap is then placed on the nipple I). Set in this position, should an attempt be made to raise the sash, the lever L comes in contact with the upper part of the notch or catch, aml is caused to move farther into the recess of the notch, releasing at the same time the catch E from the hammer, which causes the explosion of the cap, and producing the alarm, while the window remains lirmlylocked down. The eccentric fastener, being located, as will be seen, a sufiicient distance below, is left free to be used, as ordinarily, for holding the sash up at any desired point. This device may be used for exploding a metallic cartridge, or any other fulminating material, bysubstituting a suitable receptacle for the same in place of the nipple 1).
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is lhe combination of the sash-fastener O with the hammer B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
J. B. UNDERW'OOD.
