The coupling bracket 14 is further provided with a horizontally disposed lattened tace 17 extending outwardly at right angles to the base 15. A flat disk shaped head 18 abuts the lower fiat side ot' the face 17 ot the coupling bracket 14 and is rotatably connected thereto. Reinforcing webs 19 connect the portions 15 and 17 ot the coupling bracket. lt will thus be seen that the coupling bracket 14 is adapted to rotate in a vertical plane on the head 13 of the arm 3 and the disc or head 18 is adapted to rotate in a horizontal plane on the portion 17 ot said coupling bracket.
A lever operated detent 20 is mounted on each of the portions 15 and 17 of the bracket 14 and said detents are adapted to project into registering openings in the adjacent portion of the bracket and heads 13 and 18 for the purpose ot' securing same in adjusted position with respect to each other.
The swivel head 18 has connected thereto a pair ot outwardly and downwardly extending arms 21 in the lower end portions of which the opposite ends of a horizontal shaift 22 are mounted. A saw hanger or arm 23 is suspended from the shaft 22 in a. manner to swing thereon through the medium of base apertured arm 24 on the upper end or" said hanger through which the shaft 22 extends.
A mandrel 25 is journaled in the lower end of the hanger 23 and extends laterally beyond the opposite sides thereof and has mounted on oneend a circular saw 26. The opposite end of the mandrel 25 has mounted thereon a pulley 27. An electric motor 28 is mounted on the hanger 23 adjacent its upper end and a drive pulley 29 is mounted on the shaft 30 of said motor.
An endless drive belt 31 is trained over the pulleys 29 and 27 for rotating the saw 26 when the motor 28 is in operation.
A safety guard 32 is mounted on the f hanger 23 and extends in frontof the belt 31 and a` guard 33 protects the operator from the saw 26. Y
As before .stated the hanger 23 with the saw 26 and motor 28 thereon is adapted to swing on the shaft 22 and in order to secure said hanger in a manner to prevent the swinging of same on said shaft when it is so desired, a pair of laterally extending apertured arms 34 are mounted thereon through which extends a vertical rod 35 the upper end of which is adapted to be inserted in a socket 36 formed in a depending portion 37 of the head 18.
The lower end of the rod 35 is clamped in a sleeve 38 through the medium of a set screw 39 and said sleeve is provided with a lateral extension 40 which projects through an elongated slot 41 in the hanger 23. rl`he portion ot the extension 40 which extends through the slot 41 is externally threaded and of less diameter than the portion of the arm 40 which is rearwardly of the hanger 23 and a shoulder is thus provided which engages the adjacent base portion of said hanger 23 on opposite sides of the slot 41. A clamping nut 42 is threaded on the end of the arm 40 and is of greater width than the slot 41. It will thus be seen that when the clamping nut 42 is threaded inwardly on the arm 40, said arm will be frictionally clamped on the hanger 23 at any desired point between the ends of the slot 41.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a wood sawing machine wherein the rotary saw may be set at any desired angle and secured in its adjusted position. The slidable con- Y nection of the arm 3 on the standard 2 permits vertical adjustment of the saw. The connection provided by the head 13 and the portion 15 of the coupling bracket 14 permits lateral swinging of the saw, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
i The connection between the head 18 and the portion 17 of the coupling bracket 14 permits rotary adjustment of the saw as seen in Figure 4 ot' the drawings. The swinging a connection et the hanger 23 on the shaft 22 permits the saw to be swung in a vertical plane, as will be apparent. For the purpose of shifting the saw when the device is in operation, a handle 43 is mounted on the hanger 23 adjacent its lower end.
A switch 44 is also mounted on the hanger 23 for controlling the flow of current through the motor 28.
It is to be understood that any other type of woodwork cutter may be mounted on the mandrel 25 in the place of the rotary saw 26, such as a dado cutter. It is believed that the many advantages of a wood sawing machine constructed in accordance with this invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be had which fall within the scope ot the invention as claimed.
lVhat is claimed as new is:
1. A wood sawing machine of the character described comprising a standard, a laterally extending arm slidably mounted on the standard, coacting means on said standard and the arm for shifting the latter longitudinally thereof, a coupling bracket connected for rotation in a vertical plane to the tree end of the arm, a supporting element connected for rotation in a horizontal plane to the coupling bracket, a saw hanger swingingly suspended from the supporting element, a rotary saw mounted on the saw hanger, means for rotating said saw and means for locking the adjacent elements together to prevent relative movement therebetween.
2. A wood sawing machine of the character described comprising a vertical standard, a horizontal arm slidably mounted on the llO lli
standard, means for shifting said arm on the standard, and means for adj ustably coupling a saw to the free end of said arm comprising a fiat vertically disposed head on the arm, a coupling bracket having a lat vertically disposed face for engagement with the head, means for rotatably coupling the bracket to the head, said coupling bracket being further provided with a iiat horizontally disposed face portion at right angles to the vertical portion, a flat horizontally disposed head rotatably connected to the last named portion of the coupling bracket, depending arms connec-ted to the horizontal head, a horizontal shaft supported in the lovver end portions of said arms, a saw hanger swingingly mounted on the shaft at one end and having a rotary saw journaled therein at its opposite end and means for securing the saw in adjusted position on the arm.
3. A Wood Working machine oi the character described comprising a vertical standard, a horizontal arm adjustably mounted on the standard, a coupling bracket rotatably connected to the free end of the arm, a supporting element rotatably connecte-d to the coupling bracket, and a saw hanger svvingingly connected to the supporting element and having means thereon for preventing swinging of the hanger on the supporting element and comprising a socketed extension extending from the supporting element, an elongated rod slidably mounted for vertical movement on the hanger and adapted for insertion in the socket, and means adjacent the lower end of the rod adjustably anchoring the same to the hanger.
