VThe subj ect-matter of the present invention relates generally to the art of cutlery, and the improvements are directed to a novel form of device adapted for use in connection with the severing or cutting of fibrous material, either in the form of cord, thread or twine.
Primarily, the object of the present invention resides in the provision of an article of the above-mentioned character, which comprises an assemblage. of cooperating parts wherein the aforesaid severing or cutting operations may be performed without danger of injury to the op-erator.
Another'object of the invention resides in the provision of a novel cutter-supporting member adapted to carry a removable cutting blade, the cutting edge of the latter being normally sheathed within a companion part.v Y
Still another object is to provide a novel and unique body portion having said cuttersupporting member pivotally arranged therewith, said vbody portion being suitably recessed whereby the cutting edge of said blade may be sheathed as aforesaid, j
A still further object of the invention is to provided'means whereby said cutting blade is normally sheathed within a portion of said body portion, said means constantly urging said bladel to return to this sheathing position when said blade is operating upon, or has operated upon, the-material to be severed.
Still another object is the production of a device of` the above-mentioned character wherein certain surfaces are presented to guide the material to be severed to a position to unsheath the cutting blade and to place said material against the latter for sabsequent severance.
And a still further objectof the invention is to produce a novel form of body portion Y presenting an enlargement or nose portion adjacent the end thereof to facilitate the insertion of the article into stitching, or the like, whereupon said stitching is conveyed to the cutting' blade as aforesaid.
Still a further object is to provide an article adapted to sever cord, twine, thread, or the like, said article being adapted for cooperation with a supporting member whereby the former may be positioned at a location, preferably erect, to facilitate the severing operations, said supporting member being adapted to maintain said article in a rigid position whereby the hands ef the operator are freed during the severing of the aforesaid material. j With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings, and particularlypointed out in the claims.

Referring now more in particular to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denoteV similar parts throughout the several Views, let 5 denote the body portion of the device, havingv one end arranged to present a handle 6 and being partially recessed, as indicated at7, to define side walls, 8 and 9, parallelly disposed, which are apertured, as shown at l0, said apertures being in a-linement. As clearly shown'in said drawings, the other end of said body portion is provided with a nose portion 1l, which adjoins a neck portion l2, preferably circular in cross-section, the latter blending with the curved surfaces 13 and la arrangedin the edges of the side walls 8 and 9 respectively.
The cutter-supportingmember of the de vice is designated by the numeral 15., and is adapted to be received within said recess 7, and to be pivotally disposed therewith, said arrangement being effected by passing a screw or the like, 16a, through apertures 10, f.

Said cutter-supporting member comprises members 16 and 17, adapted to receive a cutting blade 18 therebetween, the upper portion of said member 16 being bent over, as indicated at 19, to overlie the upper portion of said blade, while the member 17, somewhat in the forni of plate, abuts a face of said blade, said parts being held in assembled relation by means of the screw 20. lt will further be observed that the lower medial portions of said members 16and 17, are recessed as indicated at 21 and 22, to expose the cutting edge 23 of said blade 18. If desired said member 16 may be provided with protuberances 2d and 25, w iich seat into the usual apertures in an ordinary safety razor blade, andwhich fui'- tlier project into openings 26 and 27 of said member 17.
As clearly shown in Fig. 2, said blade 18 has its cutting edge normally sheathed within a portion of said recess 7, this particular arrangement bei-iig made possible in view of the spring or tension means 28, which encircles the fastening means 16, one leg 29 of said spring 28, abutting said supporting member 15, while the other leg 30 abuts the body portion 5, the said supporting member being recessed, as indicated at 31, for the re- .ception oi said spring 28. lt will be noted that said member or plate 17 terminates adjacent said screw 16a, the edge of said plate dcfining one side wall of said recess 31.
In the operation of the device as a. Cord,
string or twine cutter, the material to be severed introduced along the curvedsurfaces 13 and 1li, and in view of a cooperating curved surface 32 arranged at the forward end of said supporting member 15, the passage of the material swings said member 15 on its pivot, thus tensioning the spring 28, and as the material abuts the cutting edge 23, of said blade 18 as shown in Fig. 3), said material is severed. As the severed ends fall apart, said spring 28 returns the blade to the position shown in 1, and thus no danger of the operator receiving a cnt from said blade exists. ln order to free the hands of the operator during the severance of the cord, I propose to provide a supporting member 33, which is flanged, as indicated at 311, to facilitate attachment to an object by means of the fastening means 35. The body portion of said supporting member 33 is provided with aI recess 36, corresponding to the particular dimension of said handle 6, whereby the latter is snugly engaged and the article maintained in an erect position as shown in Fig. 3.
The article is admirably'adapted for cutting stitching or basting, and in this connection the nose portion 11 is inserted beneath said stitching or basting and a continued insertion there-of conveys the thread along the circular portion 12 and as it abuts the curved surfaces 13, 14 and 32, the cutter-supporting member 15 is retracted as aforesaid, and as the thread abuts the cutting edge 23, the severance is performed. As pointed out heretofore, the said spring` 28 returns the cutting edge 23 to its normally sheathed position with respect to the body portion.
ln view of the plate 17, the blade may be readily removed by loosening the screw 2O and a new one replaced desired.
vlhile the present is a disclosure of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, as various changes in the minor details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as deined in the appended claims.

A device of the character described coinprising a body portion having a recess, a cutter-supporting member pivotally borne by said body portion, the lower edge of said member presenting a recess intermediate its ends, a plate adapted to be attached to said member and having a recess in its lower edge adapted to align with the recess in said meniber, a cutting blade positioned between said member and said plate and having its cutting edge exposed in the recesses of said member and plate, said body portion presenting a guiding surface whereby the material to be severed unsheatlis said cutting edge and places said material in a position to be severed.
