My present invention relates to an improved emblem or the like mounting and has for its primary object to provide a convenient, practical and simple means for mount ing emblem carrying pieces, name, number or initial plates upon a mounting surface or base member.

A further object of the'invention is to provide a mounting for the devices above enumerated which willnot take away from the attractiveness of the mounting or base member to which the devices are applied but, on

the other hand, which will enhance the appearance of the mounting or. base member and make the combined assembly one of unique attractiveness while also of special usefulness for denoting, as an example, ownership.

Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter, the novel features and combinations being set forth in the appended claims.

ample, 5 represents the belt buckle which I v will hereinafter refer to as a base member. The buckle in this respect being provided with the usual parts for holding the belt 6. According to one,form of the invention, and as particularly illustrated in Fig. 3, I provide a plurality of countersunk areas 7 in the face of the buckle 5, the same being produced preferably by a suitable punching operation. At-the same time, I also provide an opening 8 within each of the countersunk areas 7 with the opening preferably extending through the thickness of the base member or buckle. These countersunk areas 7 are made for the reception of each of a plurality of separately formed emblem pieces 9which are shaped to correspond t9 the shape of the countersunk areas 7 so that they snugly fit therein. In'the case of an oval shaped emblem piece, asillustrated in Fig. 1, which, due to its shape, cannot turn or rotate in the countersunk areas, I employ a round rivet 10 (see Fig. 5), the same being integrally or otherwise formed on the underside of the emblem piece and adapted to extend through the opening 8 made to receive it in the base member 5. An instrument or tool suitable for the purpose is then caused to engage the rivet from the back of the base member to flange or clinch the same in the opening '8. The separately formed emblem pieces are preferably made of metal, although they may be made of other material; in any event, their thickness should be the same as that of the depth of the countersunk areas in which they are mounted so as to leave their faces flush with the face of the base member. . lfnso ne cases itjfivill be desirable to employ circular emblem pieces such as illustrated at 9 in Fig. 2. In this case, the countersunk areas. 7, see Fig. 4, are also circular. Since the circular emblem pieces have a tendency to rotate in the countersunk areas 7, it becomes desirable to provide for special riveting means to guard against this rotation. I accomplish this special purpose by means of the square rivet 10 illustrated in Fig. 6. The

openings 8 in the base member which receive these square rivets, are made correspondingly s uare. so that after the rivet is flanged or clinched, as shown in Fig. 4, the square opening for the rivet will prevent rotation of the circular emblem pieces.

In Fig. 7 I have illustrated a modified form in which the base member 5 is made with a plurality of punched openings 11, a pair of openings for each of the emblem pieces, the openings bein positioned in the base member at diametrica 1y opposite sides of the area 7 to be occupied by the emblem pieces. In this pieces .12 may be countersunk so as to inset. the emblem pieces, if desired, or theemblem pieces may be simply superimposed upon the 7 surface of the base member, as shownto best advantage in Fig. 9.

Accordin to the form of the invention illustrated 1n Fig. 8, the face of the base member 5 is provided with countersunk areas 15 for insetting the emblem pieces. The emblemopieces for this form are preferably square, hexagon-shape, or for that matter, any other'desirableshape, instead of circu lar, as shown in Fig. 7. Instead of employing only two pins, spurs, or; the like for this form, each of the emblem pieces will be made with four pins or spurs 13.

As shown in Figs. 8 and 10, the emblem piece is shown as at 16, the same being inset in the countersunk area 15 and thepins or spurs extend through the four openings 11 for each piece with their ends clinched as at 18, in the same manner as the ends 14 of the pins or spurs 13 shown in Fig. 9.

In all the forms illustrated, it will be readily seen that the emblem pieces are impaled on the base member 5 and held against rotation or other relative movement so that there is no chance of them working loose, be-

.. coming lost, or getting out of alinement, that any one of the forms may be conveniently applied to the base member without 1n any way interfering with any device or mechanism that it may be desirable to apply to they back of the base member, that the pieces will attractively display whatever marking with which they are equipped.

It is of-course understood that the base a member'5 will usually be made of metal and that, aside from the areas occupied-by the emblem pieces, the face of the same may be decorated as desired and in this connection colors may be used which will blend or contrast with the colors of the emblem pieces, if they happen to be made in colors, or the emblem pieces may otherwise be decorated to blend with the decorations of the base member. I

Considering the invention as applicable to belt buckles, any one desiring to purchase a belt buckle and use the same with his initials may pick out the proper initials from a lienpieces thus selected may then be quickly and conveniently applied to the belt buckle. The

emblem pieces need not all be used for initial purposes as it may be desirable to use one initial, as an example, and two crests or designs, or forthat matter, any combination may be usedthatis desired.

Obviously those skilled in the art may make various changes in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the claims hereto appended and I wish therefore not to be restricted to the precise construction herein disclosed.

I claim :v-- 1 1. An emblem or the like mounting comprising an emblem carrying piece having a hollow circular rivet projecting from one side thereof for impaling said piece upon a base member.

2. A nrounting for emblems or the like comprising a base member, a countersunk area in one face thereof, a tapered opening extending from said countersunk area to the Opposite face of said base member, and an emblem carrying member comprising a portion. adapted to fit within said countersunk area and a portion for extending into said opening adapted to be clinched therein against the tapered sides of said opening.

A mounting for emblems or the like comprising a base member, a non-circular countersunk area in one face thereof, an opening extending from said countersunk area to the opposite face of the base member, and an emblem carrying member comprising a portion adapted to fit snugly withln said countersunk area and a portion for extending into said opening adapted to be clinched J therein.

A mounting for emblems or the like comprising a base member, a countersunk area in one face thereof, an opening extending from said countersunk area to the opposite face of said base member, and an emblem carrying member comprising a portion adapted to fit within said countersunk area and a circular portion thereon having an opening therein adapted to be swaged to hold said emblem carrying member in place.

A mounting for emblems or the like comprising a base member having a countersunk area in one face thereof, a member adapted to fit within and completely fill said countersunk area, a plurality of projections on said member, a plurality of openings extending from said countersunk area to the opposite face of the base member, said projections on March, D. 1928.

A mounting for emblems or the like comprising a base member, a countersunk area in one face thereof, a tapered opening extending from said countersunk area to the opposite face of said base member, and an emblem carrying member comprising a portion adapted to fit within said countersunk area and a circular portion thereon having an opening therein, said circular portion being adapted to be swaged against the sides of said tapered opening to hold said emblem carrying member "in position, said swaged portion being arranged entirely within said opening.

A mounting for emblems or the like comprising a base member, a separately formed emblem piece, a countersunk area in the face of said base member for the reception of said emblem piece having an opening therein, said emblem piece being adapted to substantially fill said countersunk area, and means for holding said emblem piece in said countersunk area so that the face thereof is flush with the face of the base member comprising a rivet on the back of the emblem piece adapted to be clinched in said opening.

A mounting for emblems or the like comprising a base member, a plurality of separately formed circular emblem pieces, and means for attaching said emblem pieces to said base member comprising a square rivet on said emblem pieces co-operating with a tapered opening substantially square in cross section, said rivet being swaged so that it engages the sides of said opening without being clinched over the edges of said opening which are adjacent said opening on the under face of said base member.
