- My'invention relates to improvements in ineans for clamping parts in position to facilita te the securement or working thereof, such j as in the art of woodworking'and'the same 5'ha's'for its objecttoprovide a simple,-efficient a and reliable device which is readily manipulated and secured in position to exert a clamping action alonga plurality of lines of direc- V tion or at a plurality of points. '1'. Another object'of the invention is tocprovide a device of the character specified in which certain of the clamping components thereof are capable of being relatively moved to exert conjointly a third clamping action 5 along a line of direction extending trans- 'j'versely relative to the lines ofdirection of -said clamping component's.
Another object of the inventionis to pro- 'vide adevice of the' character specifiedin '2 which an attachment l may be readily connect'edv to'a pair .of clamps for causing posi- *tive movement thereof towards each other to z exert fat-clamping action'along a line 'of directionextending transversely relative to the 7 i lines of dire'ction of the-individual clamps.
Qther'objects will in partbe obvious and f Referring to the drawing the clamping [means-includes apairof clamps 1 0 and 12, Y
eachcomprising a standard 14 having a lower arm '16 secured thereon andupper' arm '18 slidable thereon. The outer end'r of lower arm 1 6 is provided with a universally c swiveled abutment 20 adapted to-engage a piece or member to be clamped and the outer end of the upper arm 18 is provided with a screw 22 threaded therethrough and having I a universally swiveled abutment 24 cooperating with the abutment 20. The two clamps J 10 and 12 are substantially'alike in construction. a "The clamps 10 and 12 are connected to- Fig. 4 is-a sectionon the line of Fig. 2.-

gether. means 26" for moving the clamps towardeach other toconjointly exert a clampngaction along a transverselline'g l The con-v necting' means 26 includes a pair'o'flarms 28 I and 30 preferablyiprovid ed with hooklike" orslotted endportions 32 and 34 adapted to J SA-TENF OFFICE q embracethe standards 14 to extend laterally towards each other and secured to thestandards bytlie set screws 36; Themembers 28 and 30"are pivoted together at their inner" ends as indicated at 3 I v Each member32 and 34 is provided with a pair of rearwardlyextending ears or brackets 40 between which are swiveled the nuts 42 and 44 u pon vertical axes. A threaded actu ating member 46 meshes with thenuts 42land 44, the1n e n'r1ber 46 comprisingjpreferab ly left I a 7 threads as indicated at- 48 and 50' so that the device may bemore hand 'alidright hand quickly clamped by mea'nsdof the crank 52."
The 'abutments 20' and 24 are preferably roughened or ribbed as indicated at 54'to'preduring the transverse clamping action.
; In operation, the actuating means 26 are readily secured to the clamping components c10 and 12 by engaging the slotted portions 32 and 34 with the standardsl4 andsecuri'ng the "vent the clampfrom slipping over the work same by set screws 36fafter being slidably adj ustedthereon. The clamping components 10 and 12'are then engaged with the pieces of work by adjustment of thescrews 22. By rotating thescrew '46 the clamping compo- ,nents 10 and 12 move towards each other on pivot 38 withoutdanger of slipping relative to the work toeXjert a third clamping action along a transverse line and cause the pieces to be firmly pressed into'engagement with each ,otheratthe contiguous edges thereof.
In myc'inve'ntion the clamping components 10' and 12 therefore form conjointly a third clamping component,,thereb-y rendering the device more universal and flexibleand enlarging the usefulness thereof. i I
Further, the clamping components'1O and 12 are connected by a plurality of parallel connections, one ofwhich is pivotal and the otherof which is the transversely extending Mydevice may be readily manipulated and ,l argedrange of useiulness, andparticnlarly in connection with the fabrication of veneered g g of various joints, and the 7 working upon curvedsnriiace;v
