This invention relates to storage, packing or shipping receptacles, more particularly to foldable box bodies of the hexagonal type for the storage or shipping of hats and other commodities, and the invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a strong, durable, foldable" box body of the form and for the purpose set forth and with the box body produced by a material saving in stock with respect to the stock employed in the production of such type of boxes now in general use and which results in a material decrease in the cost of manufacture.
, A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a box body of the hexagonal type including a foldable side member formed of a single length of material and a foldable bottom member fixedly secured to and within the foldable side member and wit-h the said members being of hexagonal contour.
A further-object of the invention resides in scoring substantially a half part of a rectangular web and completely utilizing said half part to provide a pair of box side members, each of a single length and further utilizing the other half part of such web, after being scored to provide a pair of box body bottoms and whereby such utilization and operations will provide for a material saving in stock resulting in decreased cost of production.
A. further object of the invention resides in the utilizing of a rectangular web of stock to provide a pair of box body side members and a pair of box body bottoms.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a box body of hexagonal contour which is strong, durable, compact, foldable, readily assembled, quickly extended and folded when desired, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the box body.
Figure 4 is a plan of the box body when folded and illustrating in dotted lines the bottom of the box body.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the box body when extended.
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 Figure 5. Figure 7 is a section on line 7-7 Figure 5. Figure 8 is a top plan view partly broken away of a rectangular web or stock from which a pair of body side members and body bottoms are formed.
The foldable box body side member is formed of a single strip of stock, referred to generally at 1 and scored at 2, 3, 4:, 5 and 6 to provide bends for the wall portions 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 respectively. The strip 1 is also scored, in proximity to its end 13 to provide a bend 14: and a flap 15. The bend 14. is positioned between the flap 15 and the wall portion 12. The flap 15 has its outer face secured to the inner face of wall portion 7 by a suitable cementitious material. The end 16 of strip 1 is flush with the bend 14:. When the flap 15 is secured to the wall portion 7 the box body side member is of hexagonal contour. The box body side member is foldable against itself from the bends 2 and 5.
The box body bottom member is formed from a sin le piece of stock, referred to generally at 1 and which is scored as at 18, 19 to provide bends for a pair of oppositely disposed, rectangular flaps 20, 21 respectively. The stock 17 is scored at 22, 23 to form bends for a pair of substantially triangular shaped flaps indicated generally at 24, 25 respectively. The flap 24 is scored as at 26 to provide an outer fold 27 and .aninner fold 28. The flap 25 is scored as at 29 to provide an inner fold 30 and an outer fold 31. The folds 27, 28, 30 and 31 are of substantially triangular form. The folds 27, 28 extend in an opposite direction with respect to the folds 30, 31. The flaps 24 and 25 are of the same length and extend from one end of the flaps 20. 21 to the horizontal median of the stock 17.
vThe stock 17 is scored as at 32, 33 to form bends for a pair of substantially triangular shaped flaps indicated generally at 34, 35. The flap 34 is scored as at 36 to provide an outer fold 37 and an inner fold 38. The flap 35 is scored as at 39 to provide an outer fold 40 and an inner fold 41. The pair of folds 37, 38 extend from the other end of the flap 20 to the horizontal median of the stock 17. The pair of folds 40 and 41 extend from the other end of the flap 21 to the horizontal median of the stock 17. The pair of folds 37, 38 are of substantially triangular contour and the pair of folds 40, 41 are of like form. The stock 17 is formed at its longitudinal median with a score 42 to permit the box body bottom folding upon itself.
The flaps 20, 21 are of a Width to correspond to the width of the Wall portions 9, 12. The flap 20 has its outer face secured by suitable cementitious material to the inner face of the Wall portion 12 at the bottom of the latter. The flap 21 has its outer face secured to the inner face of the Wall portion 9 by a suitable cementitious material at the bottom of the wall portion 9. The fold 28 is secured to the inner face of the wall portion 7 and inner face of flap 15 by suitable cementitious material at the bottom of said lower portion 7 and flap 15. The fold 31 has its outer face secured to the inner face of wall portion 8. The fold 40 has its outer face secured by a suitable cementitious material to the inner face of the Wall portion 10 and the fold 37 has its outer face secured to the inner face of wall portion 11. The folds 28, 31, 40 and 37 are secured to the lower part of the wall portions 7, 8, 10 and 11.
When the bottom member is fixedly secured Within the side member of the box body and when the box body is folded, the inner folds 27, 30, 41 and 38 of the flaps 24, 25, 35 and 34 extend to the dotted line position shown in Figure 4 and when the box body is extended the inner fold of a flap will assume the position shown in Figures 2,5, 6 and 7. When the box body is folded the inner folds 27 and 32 are positioned on one side of the box bottom member and the folds 30 and 41 on the 1(Sthier side of the bottom member of the box 0 y.
The outer ends of the folds 27, 28, 30, 31, 40, 41, 37 and 38 are rounded.
Any suitable form of cover may be employed in connection with the box body.

When the box body is folded the inner face of the bottom member opposes the inner face of the side member. To be more explicit in this connection it Will .be stated that one-half of the inner face of the bottom member opposes the inner face of the wall portions 8, 9 and 10 and the other half of the inner face of the bottom member opposes the inner face of the wall ' portions 7, 12 and 11. The bends 18, 19 and 42 enable for the folding of the bottom member in the manner as stated and the bends 2 and 5 permit of the folding of the side member so that it will completely enclose the bottom member.
Referring to Figure 8, there is illustrated a rectangular blank or stock of the desired thickness and from which a pair of side members and a pair of bottom members is formed. The rectangular stock .or web is indicated generally at 43 and one half thereof provides a pair of side members and the other half thereof provides for a pair of bottom members. Therefore from each blank there is obtained two complete box bodies.
That half of the stock 13 from which the pair of side members are formed is indicated generally at 44 and that part of the stock 43 from which the pair of body members are formed is indicated generally at 45. The stock 43 is formed with a pair of parallel, spaced cutting lines 46, 47 and acutting line 48. The lines 46, 47 are disposed in proximity to the longitudinal median of the stock 43 and the line 48 is positioned in proximity The stock 43 is also provided with a cutting line 49 which is disposed centrally between thecutting line 46 and the other end edge of stock 43. The stock 43 is scored from cutting line 46 to the end 50 thereof. The scores are arranged in spaced relation and provide the bends 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 14 to form respectively the wall portions 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and flap 15. The cutting of the stock on the line 49 provides for the strip 1 from which a pair of box body side members are set up.
Leading from the bends which provide the scores 2, 3 to the cutting line 47 are cutting ed by a pair of scores which provide the bends 18 for a pair of bottom members. The stock 43 is also formed with a pair of spaced cutting lines 53, 54 which lead from the scores providing the bends 5, 6 to the cutting line 47.
The cutting line 48 is separated by a pair of scores which provide the bends 19 for a pair of body members. The stock 43 has spaced cutting lines 55, 56 which lead from cutting line 48 to end 57 of the stock and the latter also has spaced cutting lines 58, 59 which lead fromcutting line 48 to bend 57 of the stock. Curved cutting lines 60, 61, 62, and 63 lead from the cutting line 47 to the cutting line 48. The curved cutting lines 60, 63 are oppositely disposed with respect to each other. The curved cutting lines 61, 62
are oppositely disposed with respect to each other. The shape of cutting line 62 corresponds to the shape of cutting line 60 and the shape of cutting line 61 corresponds to the shape of cutting line 63.
The stock 43 is scored to provide the bends 22, 23, 26, 29, 32, 33, 36 and 39, for a pair of bottom members. The material between the cutting lines 46, 51, 52, 53 and 54 provides the flaps 20 for a pair of bottom members. The material between the bends 57 and cutting lines 55, 56, 58 and 59 provides the flaps 21 for a pair of bottom members. The material between the cutting lines 47, 48, 60, 61, 62 and 63 provides the foldable flaps for a pair of bottom members. After the stock 43 has been lined and scored, it is severed first to provide a pair of side members and then severed to provide a pair of bottom members. It will be observed that the part 44 of the web provides the two strips and the part 45 of the web the pair of bottom members and therefore by providing the stock 43 in the manner as stated a saving in material or stock is had and which results in decreasing the cost of production.

with this invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodi-' ment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be undertsood that changes in the details ofconstruction can be had which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is v 1. A foldable box body com rising a foldable hexagonal side member ormed from a one-piece web havin a fla at one end secured to the inner ace 0 the web at the other end thereof, and a foldable hexagonal shaped body bottom member provided with two spaced pairs of extendible flaps and with each flap of a pair formed of an inner and an outer fold, said outer folds being secured to the inner face of said web, and said bottom member further including a pair of opposed, spaced, rectangular flaps, each arranged between a flap of each pair of extendible flaps and secured to the inner face of said web.
- 2. A foldable box body comprising a onepiece web having spaced scores to form bends to provide wall portions and a fla at one end, said flap secured to the inner ace of a wall portion at the other end of the web to provide a foldable box body side member of hexagonal contour, and a foldable box body bottom member of hexagonal contour including extendible flaps Having inner and outer folds and with the outer folds secured to the inner faces of certain of said wall portions, and said bottom member further including provide a foldable box body side member of hexagonal contour, and a foldable box body bottom member of hexagonal contour including extendible flaps having inner and outer folds and with theout-er folds secured to the inner faces of certain of said wall portions, said bottom member further including a pair of opposed, spaced, parallel flaps secured to the inner faces of the other wall portions, said extendible flaps arranged in pairs, and 'said pair of opposed, spaced flaps positioned between the pairs ofextendible flaps.
4. A foldable box body comprising a onepiece web having spaced scores to form bends to provide wall portions and a flap at one end, said flap secured to the inner face of a wall portion at the other end of the web to provide a foldable box body side member of polygonal contour, and a foldable box body bottom member of polygonal contour including extendible flaps having inner and outer folds and with the outer folds secured to the inner faces of certain of said wall portions, said bottom member further including a pair of opposed, spaced, parallel flaps secured to the inner faces of the other wall portions.
5. A foldable box body comprising a onefolds and with the outer folds secured to the inner faces 'of certain of said wall portions, said bottom member further including a pair of opposed, spaced, parallel flaps secured to the inner faces of the other wall portions, said extendible flaps arranged in pairs, and said pairof opposed, spaced flaps positioned between the pairs of extendible flaps.
