V invention particularly relates to means for;
grouping the addressed magazines according 10 to a predetermined classification. 7 For example, if the magazlnes are to be sent to various towns itv is desirable: that the L magazines for each townbe grouped to-' gether and bundled for delivery to that par:
handling and in shipping, and avoids the necessity of sorting the magazines oilice. w
The grouping of the magazines is. accom- 29 plished by providing a tab on the first or the last printing device within a series for a group. Every printing device sotabbed will cause the grouping mechanism to operate a jogger and jog'one magazine in the 25 are being carried from the machine, and the jogged magazine will indicate the beginning or the ending of a group. I This enables the 30 zines in removing them from the machine and each group may then be separately bundled for shipping'and delivery. Y
The invention may be applied to various and claimed in our copend-ing applications, Serial No,212, i24 and 212,425, both filed August 12,, 1927. v
The primary object of the invention is to provide novel automatic grouper controlled by certain address printing devices whereby ticular town. This method saves time in at the post continually moving line ofmagazines as they operator to readily sort the grouped magatypes of machines but it is particularly adapted for machines such as are dl'scloseCl'.
construction, which can be readily and eco noin-ically manufactured, and which isa'da pted to be chines.

Figs. 6 and 8 areenlarged detail sectional views showing the-latch lever and some of the cooperating partsin different positions.
Fig. 91s an enlarged detail front elevat1on showing the Jogger and its operating mechanism.
Fig. 1 0 is a longitudinal sectional view of some of the parts shown in Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is'a transverse sectional some of the parts shown in Fig. 9.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the printing machine such as is disclosed in the aforesaid copending applications and it has aframe 2 and a bed 3. A cam shaft 4 mount ed in the frame and driven from the'd'rive shaft 5', drives the longitudinal shaft 6:
through the chain of gears 7 and the bevel gear 8-, Fig. 1.
Anaddress printing device magazine 9' on the frame carries a stack of printing devices 10 which are adapted to be fed interview of mittently one at a time from the bottom of the. stack to printingposition. The printing devices are of the; usual type and-pass through certain selectormcchanism where they are either selected to be printed or to be skipped. Some of the devices are provided with a tablO which controls the Each printing device rides over and depresses the pawl. If the printing device is not provided with a tab the pawl returns to up position immediately after the printing device rides off of the pawl if the printing device has a tab 10 this tab will continue to hold the pawl depressed after the printing device proper has ridden off of the pawl and while it is temporarily at rest in position adjacent the pawl. This continued depression of the pawl sets in operation the parts which result in jogging the magazine which receives an address impression from the printing device having the tab.
The tripper pawl 11, Figs. 3, 4, 6 and 8, is carried by a tripper 12 having a notched end 13 which is engaged by a lug 14 on the latch lever 15 pivoted at 15. A spring 16 holds the tripper in normal position in engagement with the latch lever when the tripper pawl 11 is in its raised position as shown in Figs. 3 and 6. j
A rod 17 is connected at one end to the upper end of the latch lever 15 and at its other end to an arm 18 rigid on the rock shaft 19,
-. Figs. 3 and 4. lVhen the tripper is disengaged from the latch lever a spring 20 connected to the rod 17 and to the frame, Fig. 3, pulls the rod and the latch lever to the position shown in Fig. 4, and at the same time rocks the rock shaft 19 for operating the jogging mechanism.
The rock shaft 19 is mounted in suitable hearings on the machine frame and has fixed thereto an angle lever 21 to which is pivoted a roller 22 engaging a restoring cam 23 fixed to the longitudinal shaft 6, Figs. 4, 5 and 7. A link 24 has one end pivoted at 25 to the angle lever and its other end pivoted at 26 to the pawl releasing arm 27 which is pivoted on the stud shaft 28 mounted in the casting 28 fixed to the bed of the frame. Through these parts the pawl 11 is normally held in up position, Fig. 6, the roller 22 being in normal position out of operative relation to the restoring cam, Fig. 5, and the tripper 12 being engaged with the latch lever 15, Fig. 6. When the pawl 11 is depressed by the tab 10, Fig. 8, the tripper 12 is disengaged from the latch lever and the roller 22 is held in operative engagement with the restoring cam by spring 20, Fig. 7
A sleeve 29, Fig. 10, is loosely mounted on the longitudinal shaft 6 and carries a jogger cam 29, having a stud 30thereon upon which a pawl 31 is pivoted and carries a pawl roller 32, Figs. 5, 7, 9. A sleeve 33 is pinned on the shaft 6 between the restoring cam 23 and the jogger cam 29 and it has a slot 34 therein ifllich is adapted to receive the end 35 of the pawl 31. A spring 36 fastened to the jogger cam and to the pawl 31 pulls the pawl towards the sleeve 33.
The jogger lever 37 is pivoted on the stud shaft 28 and carries a roller 38 which is adapted to ride on the jogger cam 29 and operate the jogger lever, Figs. 5, 7, 9. A spring 37 is connected to the jogger lever 37 and holds the roller 38 against the cam. A jogger 39 is provided with a foot 40 and is pivoted at 42, Figs. 5 and 7, to the upper end of the jogger lever 37. A spring 43 holds the jogger in operative position on the bed of the machine to engage a magazine on the delivery tapes 58.
A cam 44 fixed to the sleeve 29 is adapted to bear against the roller 45 on an arm 45 mounted on the discharge roller shaft 46, Fig. 9. 'As the high side 47 of the cam 44 strikes the roller 45 the shaft 46 is given a part turn causing the discharge rollers 48 mounted on the arms 48 fixed to the shaft 46 to be raised and allow the magazine to pass from the machine.- Stop fingers 50 on the finger bracket 49 pivotally mounted on the shaft 46 are raised or lowered by means of the arm 51 carrying the roller 52 which contacts with the stop finger cam 53. A beveled gear 54 fixed to the shaft 6 meshes with a gear 55 fixed to a transverse shaft 56 carrying rollers 57 and driving tapes 58 which carry the magazine from the feeding end 59 of the machine through the various positions and off the machine to a delivery rack 60, Fig. 2.
The operation of the device is as follows: Printing devices are stacked in the magazine 9 and certain of the devices are provided with tabs for operating the jogging mechanism. Magazines, newspapers or other articles to be addressed are fed through the machine to printing position and then off the machine to the table or rack 60. All printing devices will depress the tripper pawl 11 as they pass to printing position and this depression of the tripper pawl will disengage the tripper 12 from the latch lever 15, but this is all that will happen unless the printing device is provided with a tab, because the high part of the restoring cam 23 which then engages the roller 22 is of suflicient length to continue this engagement while the printing device is riding over the tripper pawl. After the printing device rides off of this pawl the spring 16 restores the tripper and the pawl to normal position, Fig. 6. But when a printing device provided with a tab rides over the tripper pawl the tab will continue holding the tripper pawl in depressed position long enough for the low part of the restoring cam to come into operative relation with the roller 22 and thereupon the spring 20 will pull rod 17 to the right, Fig. 4, rocking the shaft 19 and swinging the angle lever 21 to carry the roller 22 into operative engagement with the low part of the restoring cam and at the same time swinging the link 24 and the pawl releasing arm 27 to permit spring 36 to swing pawl 31, which is pivoted on jogger cam 29 to engage the end 35 with slot 34 in the sleeve 33 fixed to the longitudinal shaft 6. While the high part of the jogger cam 29 engages area-ma? the roller 38 on the jogger lever 37 the. jogger; will remain in normal position, but immediately after the, pawlf31 becomes locked to the'sleeve .38 the low part of the jogger cam engages the roller 38 and thereupon spring 37 causes the jogger lever and the jogger, to
move quickly from the position shown in F 1g. 5 to the position shown 1n Fig. 7 and.
jog the magazine. Then the hi h part of the continuously revolving cam 28 engages roller 22 and swings the angle lever 21 and rocks the shaft 19, and the angle lever swings the link 24:.and the pawl releasing arm 27 to release.

It will be noted that while a'printing device without'a" tabwill depress the tripper pawl the jogging mechamsmwill not be operated because during the time the printing device is riding over the pawl the roller 22 is operatively engaging the high part of the restoring cam 23, thereby preventingthe shaft 19 from rock- 'ing; but if the depression of the pawl iscon-v tinned a little longer by the presenceIof a tab on a printing device the high part of the cam 23 will travel beyond the roller 22 permitting spring 20 to rock shaft19 and operate the jogging mechanism as hereinbefore de scribed. 1.
Our invention provides automatic mechanism for ogging a magazine being delivered after-the address is printed thereon to indicate the beginning or the ending of'a group of magazines, and this jogging mechanism is caused to operate by a tab on the address rintin device. Therefore 7 the addressed 1 i 2 magazines Wlll be grouped in exact accord ance with the tab classification of the address printing devices.
In the specifications we have referred, 101 convenience, to a magazine as the article addressed 1n the machlne but this isnot to be understood as limiting the invention but should be construed as including a newspaper, a folder or any other article which may be used in connection with this'invention.
