Description
UNITED STATES JAMES M. TALBOTT, OF
PATENT OE TICE.
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN KEY-BANDS FOR TOBACCO-CASKS.
Specification forming part ot' Letters Patent N0. 1,790, dated September 14, 1840.
To @ZZ whom t may concern: I Be it known that I, JAMES M. TALBOTT, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have made a new and useful Inlprovernent in Key-Bands for Tobacco-Casks, r Snc., which is described as follows,' reference being had to the annexed drawings of the l stnie, making part of this specification. Figure l is a perspective view of the band, g lnortise-tongue, and key together. Fig. 2 is a perspectiveviewofthemortisestockdetachcd. l l
Fig. 3 is a representation of the ordinary dcscription of mortise.
The plain part of the hoop or band A is made in the usual manner. The mortise-stock is astont block of metal, C, perforated with a i mortise, M, the size of the tongue T to beini serted therein, from the back of which block l of metal C there project two tail-pieces, DD, i made concave on the sides coming against the i band, to which they are firmly riveted, andf| convex on the outside, and tapered toward the i ends, and as far apart as the width of the tongue i which is to pass between them. The tongue T, i before mentioned,. which enters the aforesaid mortise and passes between the tail-pieces del scribed, is made of a shape to correspond With l said mortise, and is perforated with a vertical mortise to admit a wedge-key, K, which is tok draw the ends of the band toward each other, said tongue being firmly riveted or otherwise fastened to the end of the band by having the end B of the tongue enlarged for that purpose, it being concave on the side next the hoop and convex on the other or outer side.
The band is applied to the tobacco-Cask in the manner of other bands, except in the mode of keying it up. In this case the wedge-key,
1 when driven down, acts against the solid part of the inortiseblock C and the end of the mortise in the tongue.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent., is-
Constructing the key-band with a mortise plate, C, in combination with the tongue T and Wedge K, the whole being constructed I substantially as herein set forth.
